What is your New Year’s Resolution?
It’s that time of year again… 2014 is here, and I’ve promised myself that I will do things better in the coming year. My main New Year’s resolutions are to make it to the gym every other day and to eat more healthily. I have a few smaller things that I’ve told myself I’m going to work on, mainly going to bed at a decent time and not staying up until 1 a.m. reading. That’s going to be a hard habit to break!
I recently asked my kids if they were going to make any New Year’s resolutions, and my 9-year-old son replied with, “Mom, I know I’m not going to stick to it, so why should I make one? I’ll just disappoint myself.” Such a wise child! I’ve made resolutions in the past and not stuck with them, which usually leads me feeling like a failure and not making one the next year. I’ve promised myself that this year is going to be different!
I AM going to get healthy and lose some pounds!
I AM going to make it bed at a decent hour!
I AM going to spend less money on random, unnecessary crap!
Some of the most common New Year’s resolutions I’ve heard are:
- To lose weight
- To spend less money
- To eat healthy
- To quit smoking
- To recycle
- To go back to school
- To drink less alcohol
- To take a trip with family
Do you fall into any of those categories? How do you plan to make sure that you’re going to succeed with your goals? For me, my husband is keeping me on my toes and making sure I get into the gym every other day (at least). Sometimes I need that kick in the pants to get myself going, and I always feel so much better for it!
Take our poll and tell us what your New Year’s resolution is! Then, leave us a comment about how you plan to make your resolution happen.

Jen loves to read. She can’t stop herself. It’s become an obsession. She is in love with her husband, kids, iced coffee and books. Jen lives in beautiful Colorado but is originally from the West Coast.
I have a different resolution altogether: so many times I find myself complaining about something in my life, and yet I know I am extremely lucky and have more than most; I was even able to retire at 46. Now, each night before I go to sleep I will write down one thing from that day that I should appreciate.
The best one I heard was to stop yelling at their kids LOL. I can’t say I will be able to do that, but my big thing this year is to run my first 5K.
Every year, I try not to make a resolution because I realize how hard and ambitious they can be, but this year I am going to try to keep it simple. Thinking things like “choose your battles” “take time to enjoy with the family” and “read more”. That way they are more attainable!
I made library resolutions: to return my books on time and to only take out as many books as I can read during the lending period. I have already broke both of them.
Hope you have a terrific 2014 and you acchieve everything you have set your heart into! I don’t do resolutions, instead I chose a word for this year. My word is Joyful!
I am going to move towards using reusable bags for my nonmeat groceries especially since they’ll probably eventually make us do that anyway. Sounds simple, but for me no. I need to figure out an efficient system for storing them and getting them back into the car and remembering to take them into the store with me.
My biggest goal for the year is to run at least 1000 miles in 2014. It sounds bad until you realize it is less than 20 miles a week! Good luck on your goals, I know you will do great.
Mine is to work towards healthier eating habits. That works for me because it’s a process of self improvement. So mistakes are expected, rather than discouraging setbacks like when I’m focused upon a number on the scale.
I didn’t make a resolution this year, but I do need to work on my time management skills!
I’m not making any this year because I made two last year (I rarely do) and met neither one. 😉
I am not into making resolutions but I voted hehehe. I set realistic goals instead.
I seem to be in the majority with not making one this year. I finally realized it was pointless for me to make them so rather than disappoint myself, I stopped. I wish you the ultimate success with yours though!
I rarely make New Year’s Resolution because I don’t stick to them. This year is different, though. I applied to be a Nutrisystem blogger and I get 3 months worth of food from them, plus I have to blog about my progress, so this is something that I will HAVE to stick too and I can’t wait for this tummy to be GONE!
I have those same resolutions among others! Lets keep our resolutions this year!!
This year we did something different. Instead of resolutions, we chose one word to meditate on throughout the upcoming year. The word I chose is PEACE. Now, that obviously affects my entire life, but it also seems a little simpler than a list of resolutions! (At least it does to me!)
This year I resolved to eat healthier. I have been making meal plans and not keeping junk food around the house, plus being more conscientious of why I’m eating- am I hungry or just bored?
I don’t do resolutions, but I am trying to make overall healthier changes, starting with my weight. I also want to learn to be more assertive. I’m crazy shy in real life and it’s held me back from a lot of opportunities.
my new years resolution was to just live life stop worry about everything and just live
I made my New years goal simple just to be the best mother, wife, daughter and friend I can be 😀
Wow, looks like you have a lot of goals for 2014! Mine is to become more healthy by eating healthy, excercising, drinking more water, and taking vitamins.
One of my big plans this year is to date my husband. I’m not very good at it, so I had to make it a resolution lol.
Good luck with all your resolutions I have to admit I haven’t really made any mainly as I never keep them – I have to be in the right frame of mind to change something and for me that is a never new year 🙂 x
I will definitely lose all that flab and weight and get sexier – and get my man to propose to me – Ha, I wish, lol! =)) Goodluck with yours haha!
I didn’t want to make a real “resolution”, because by Jan 2, it’s done! So, I am trying to change the way I eat and get my butt up and move more. That is what I’m trying to do. Happy New Year everyone, and don’t be so hard on yourself if you don’t do exactly what you wanted to do!
HAHA.. The poll lists to drink more alcohol. I vow to drink more wine this year! But really, I want to be healthy.. No gluten or dairy for me! Good Luck on your goals!
Mine is to be more happy. I like the recycle one!
My goals this year are to decrease my overall debt by 25% and go back to school.
I am starting to exercise and watching what i consume.
I actually didn’t make any new year resolutions this year so I have to say that I’m going ok. I do plan on hitting the gym a bit more this year but it wasn’t a resolution.
My new Year resolution is to not have one simply because I can never stick to it. I try but fail miserably every year. I am just going to try to save more money and make more money this year.
I love the fresh start of the new year, but I feel the same way about a new week/month/day, lol! My constant resolution is to get MORE ORGANIZED!!!
My resolution is simply to make better choices more often. 🙂
So far so good!
Ours as a couple is to start getting out of debt and ahead of the game. were starting a budget counseling program with a mentor in hopes it will help us pair down our debts and help us get a head.
well, I don’t make resolutions, I make goals. realistic goals. simple and joyful ones. like, going to escape somewhere with my husband for the weekend and just relax. going to visit some waterfalls as a family weekend trip… going to send out birthday cards to everyone in my family this year…no store bought cards, all hand made….
Well, last year I said I wanted to learn to play the ukelele. I even looked at them a few times, but put it off. So, a year later, I’m still keeping the same resolution. Maybe I’ll really do it this year.
