Books are making a huge comeback. Regardless of the format, Nook, Kindle, library or buying a book in paperback or hardback, people seem to be finding their passion for a good book again.
Word spreads through my office if someone is reading a great book, and usually it passes hands many times before making its way back to the owner. As I have gotten older, now married with a 5 year old, I have rediscovered that passion myself and love nothing more than getting lost in a great story.
I become consumed in the characters, the love, the pain, all of it. I have been found more than once stirring dinner with one hand, the other holding up my book to just read one more paragraph, which usually turns into 2 or 3 more pages. I know I am not alone in this and I hope that for anyone that has forgotten how satisfying reading can be, or who has no idea what else to read, this blog will be of use to you.
This blog will be a celebration of that passion.
Welcome to the “Book Nook”. I hope we can experience some new, great books together as an informal discussion group. The books selected will be new releases, typically from the Best Sellers list, although I will always be open to suggestions. I will let you all know at the beginning of the month which book the review will be on. This will give anyone interested an opportunity to buy or borrow the book. Around the 3rd week of each month, I will post my review and then would love to know what everyone else thought of the book.
With all the buzz, I thought the best way to start this discussion group would be with, “50 Shades of Grey” by E.L. James.
I look forward to what I know will be fun and thoughtful opinions on this book and on the many that will follow it. Thank you all for reading!
About the Author:
After getting married and having a baby, life took over and I stopped reading for a few years. Anytime I would try and pick up a book – diapers, dinners and a number of other things put a stop to that. Now that my daughter is a little older, I have made an effort to get back to my passions, writing and reading books. I have been an avid reader since childhood and my best memories are of hiding under my blanket with a flashlight and a great book. For me, reading a great book isn’t just something to do for an hour or two, it’s something I get lost in. I can read half a book without realizing I have turned a page. If the book is really good, I dream at night that I am the characters and have even been known to walk around in the haze of the world created only in the fiction I have read. I hope to share my passion for reading all genres of books with you and hope that we can have some great discussions.
I am excited about this! I haven’t read 50 Shades of Grey but I have heard a lot about it! I guess I need to get on that.
#50ShadesofyGrey Discussion group! Uh-oh! I heard it was good book. I was supposed to read it at the beach, but I could barely read anything there due to a lot of talking on the beach.
I love my Kindle. I have read so many more books using it since I don’t have to bother getting in the car to drive to the library. I collect Swagbucks online, and turn them in for $5 gift cards for Amazon.com. I can stack them in my account for our Kindle book purchases. When my youngest asks, “Can I get this book?” I never have to say no.
I just read the first 50 Shades of Grey last week while we were at the beach and I quickly downloaded the second one but haven’t got to read much of it yet. It is an oddly riveting book and I confess I skipped a lot of the very descriptive sexual acts that are in the book. I find it hard to put down simply because I want to see how far that Ana is willing to go with all of this.Unfortunately now that I am home from vacation I will not be able to finish the second one as quickly as the first one. On a funny note I saw a little joke on FB the other day. It said that our weather was hotter than a lonely housewife reading Fifty Shades of Grey and watching Magic Mike!
So proud of you Jodie! I’m so intrigued by this book, but my children don’t let me have a moment of time but I have hope I can start reading again!<3
I just purchased 50 Shades and will start reading it tonight.
Thank you everyone for your interest. I hope you all enjoy reading the book (and for those that have already read it, I hope you will enjoy our discussions). Ann, that sounds great, I’m going to have to check out swagbucks, that sounds like a great deal!
Karen, Thanks, I hope you can join in from time to time!
Pam, I hope you enjoy it 🙂
I’ve read all 3 books and I have to say I love them. To me, 50 shades isn’t all about the sex. It’s a dirty love story. I hope she writes a 4th book.
A dirty love story? Be right back – off to amazon! LOL
Pie, you naughty girl! LOL
Yes, it really is a love story. And a great one! They just have some kinky habits. LOL
This sounds like a great book club here on IW. I don’t have much time to read in the summer and fall, but winter is coming. I also have a Kindle, but have only purchased one book, the rest I download for free. They may not be the latest book out, but there is always plenty to pick from. If I was to title a book today it wou;d be “Baby It’s Hot Outside”.
Welcome Jodi to IW!! Looking forward to future articles from you. 🙂
Welcome, Jodie! I loved reading about your passion for reading. 🙂
.
I have always read, but used to go through stretches of not reading for months. No more. When I hit my 40’s I became determined to read all the classics I missed along with as many of the best sellers that everyone is talking about as I can. I was sort of on the fence about 50 Shades, but there is NO way I’m being left out of this party, so count me in!
Snickers, Thank you! I would really like this to be accessable to everyone, so I will make sure to not just focus on New Releases so we can utilize free downloads and the library to not kill our budgets. If anyone has read a book lately that they would recommend, please feel free to post it here and we might be able to pick it up for the monthly selection.
Anya, I was the same way. I think I went years without reading and almost had lost my desire to do so. I was afraid to try new authors because I’m pretty thrifty and hate buying a book and not enjoying it. I have really started using the library a lot, and when I do have to pay late fees I at least know it’s going to a good place. I’m glad this club has inspired you to take a chance on this book, hopefully it will be time well spent!
Jodi,
Heck, I don’t want to be left out, so I will go to Amazon and buy it. I’ve heard all sorts of conversations about this book. My time is limited, but hopefully I can read a little each day to keep up with all of you.
Snickers, Thats great! If you are like a lot of us, you might suddenly find its 3am and you are still reading 🙂
Well……I started this book last night. I thought…this is probably not for me. I am 56 years old, you know. 😉
Fast forward to page 416 out of 1031 in e book pages and ….I CAN’T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN.
Pam! That is hilarious! 50 Shades of Awesome. 🙂
Hi All: I love to read. Being from the South and North Carolina, my current favorite author is Margaret Maron. Her new book should be out soon. I read more in the summer than any other time. I have not read Fifty Shades of Grey. I will have to get on the waiting list at my local library. Does it come in a plain brown (gray) wrapper?
I’ve read all three books and honestly not really impressed. Not a good storyline to it. I need a book with a story to keep me interested. Alot of kinky sex but it got old after the first few times!!! You can tell I’m 56!!! Seriously, If I had a teenager I would not let them read it but I also don’t agree with anyone banning them. I’m reading the Hunger Games triology now and love it so far. Bring back a Harry Potter’s series, now they were fun reading.
#50Shades
I loved the Hunger Games trilogy. I was not a Potter fan. I haven’t read one whole book or seen one whole movie, though I tried, I really did.
I just bought 50 shades.
I’m with Pam (comment #20) about Shades of Grey. I haven’t read them but just from checking out reviews it sounds like they are a bit overrated. Like the only thing that makes them so good is the sex. There was so much buzz about Twilight so I read the first two books and found I didn’t like them. I felt like I wasted my time. I don’t want the same thing to happen with Shades of Grey. Although I did read The Hunger Games and liked that but before I read it I had heard it had a srong female main character and that interested me.
.
If the Book Nook ever starts reading The Game of Thrones I would be into that because I’ve had them sitting on my shelf for months. LOL.
Rosemary-Im not sure what you mean by a wrapper but the cover is a really dark grey with a lighter grey tie on it. I hope your wait list at your library isn’t too long, I know my library had about 100 people on it.
Pam and Teresa-I loved the Hunger Games books, I had a difficult time with how depressing they were (I thought i was depressed for a few days after), but thought they were very well written and great. I will hold off for now on giving my opinion of the 50 shades books until later in the month, but thanks for sharing your thoughts on it! I absolutely do not think they are appropriate for teens though, and I hope parents are not allowing their kids access. i haven’t read The Game of Thrones, but I have heard good things about it. I will check it out!
Ann- My husband had a really difficult time with Harry Potter as well. After about 2 years of my badgering him, I convinced him to start with the 4th book and just summarized the first three. He was hooked and read all the rest in the series and really loved them.
I just wanted to thank everyone for joining in these discussions! Please feel free to suggest books that you have loved or have heard good buzz on. I want to keep the genres varied and would love help picking our future reads. Thanks!
Oh my! No one told me that I would have to buy book 2 and to see this to the end, LOL!
Pam #20 – I understand where you are coming from, but here I am getting read to buy book 2 and 3.
I have never been a reader of romance books. I am a reader of true mystery and murder books myself, but obviously this book kept me very interested or I would not have read it so quickly.
I think that everyone, whether they are 20 or 80, can get into a book like this once and awhile. Was it well written? Probably not. But well enough written that I kept reading it. 😉
Jodie: Just wanted to make sure that I would not be embarrassed to be seen carrying the book around with me. You know, like Playboy, etc. come with brown wrappers around them.
Pam: I too, like mysteries with a little romance thrown in. That is what Margaret Maron mostly writes. She has two main series. One set in New York and one set in North Carolina. Of course, I like the Southern one best.
I’ve heard that a lot of women are reading 50 shades on their E-readers so that no one will know what they are reading. I wasn’t shy about it. I carried my book around everywhere I went… including my desk at work! LOL
Pam, I like to read true crime and murder mysteries also but have really gotten into the 50 Shades series. i had almost given up reading until my daughter gave me a Nook for Christmas a couple of years ago. I am thinking about reading Presumed Guilty, the book about Casey Anthony that her lawyer Jose wrote. I have mixed feelings about purchasing this book but wonder if there is anything in the book that can offer any insight into that whole bizzare family.
Carol,
It would probably make for an interesting read. I have to confess that I am gong to buy the new Sister Wives book after I finish this series. Shhhh, don’t tell anyone.
Pam,
I think I’m going to download the ebook, too. Hopefully will start this weekend.
I want to read the Sister Wives book! After seeing their interview with Natalie Morales, I’m wanting to read more — sounds like some good drama!
I would like to read the Sister Wives book also. Too bad we can’t e-mail the books off our e-readers to each other. We could save a lot of money!
I have read all 3 Fifty Shades! Loved loved loved! Enjoy & don’t stop reading!
Hi Rhonda! Welcome to IW.
I am almost finished with the second book and I have to say that a younger real life Tom Cruise keeps coming to mind when I think of the male character.
I’m picturing Christian Bale. I purchased it to read on vacation and I think I will be done before we even leave! Guess I’ll need to get #2 & #3 just in case! 🙂
We have a new thread up and you can find it here. Jodie reviews Fifty Shades of Grey.

I was so happy to come across this website and all these great book recommendations! It’s great to have a forum in which everyone gets to have their say and I don’t have to read just one review! The more insight I can get the better 🙂 Fifty Shades of Grey did not do it for me at all…I need a book with a bit more substance and a main character that I actually like! Did anyone else really dislike Ana?? I need an empowered woman! Not a weak, clumsy, submissive one! I just read, “Until Brazil” by author Bethe Lee Moulton and the main character, Beth, is the kind of heroine that I can stand behind and root for! A married, working woman who goes to Brazil on a business trip (in hopes of a promotion) and in the process falls in love with the culture, the lifestyle, and the food! I want to read about someone who takes a risk to help change and improve their life, not a sexual risk! Anyways, thought I would share a book that I really enjoyed with you http://www.untilbrazil.com/ 🙂 Looking forward to more discussions!
