Welcome May, A Month For Mothers… May’s Open Forum

Welcome May, a month for mothers, flowers, and getting outdoors! We’d like to wish all of our readers who are mothers, grandmothers, step-mothers, foster mothers, godmothers, and friends-or-aunts-who-are-just-like-mothers a Happy Mother’s Day on May 12th. We hope you have a relaxing day with just the right balance of family and “me” time.

Many of us are lucky enough to visit with our moms on Mother’s Day. That privilege becomes more and more precious as the years go by. For those of you missing your mom this May, we are sharing a beautiful piece Anya wrote a few years back to honor her mother, My Mother’s Hands. Do you find yourself thinking, “I am just like Mom?”

Did your family offer to make you brunch? Patty shared a Stuffed French Toast recipe that is easy enough for your family to make. Want to adapt it for Mother’s Day? Just replace the eggnog with milk as she suggests, but don’t forget the fresh fruit! Delicious.

Spring has sprung here in the Northeast. The flowers above are some of the scores of daffodils blooming in my garden. The sunny yellow blooms cheer me after a gray winter, but I am never satisfied! I wish I had planned ahead last fall and planted tulips and irises around the yard too. I was so inspired by Garden Guru Snicker’s lovely spring blooms last year. There is always next year…

It’s not too late for me to get a vegetable garden going again. I had great success using a mixture of Snicker’s advice and the Square Foot Gardening method. I hope to expand my garden this year, so I can try some more vegetable varieties. Do you garden? Any tips for expanding beyond my patch of lettuce, tomatoes, zucchini, and bush beans?

Thank you to those of you who participated in our Look Back Thursdays features. We love hearing your memories from different years and parts of the country. I particularly love seeing go-go boots from 1965 that my own daughters would love to wear. Everything old is new again. Who has proof that cat glasses were fashionable? Remember big hair? Shoulder pads? Those hair bows grown women wore in 1986? Send us your pictures and memories and maybe we’ll get an old fashion trend started again!

Finally, Happy Birthday to our readers who were May babies! Let us know if you’re a celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or graduation this month.

I love May too. We celebrate our oldest two children’s birthdays at the end of the month. We always enjoy that Memorial Day holiday. The countdown to the last day of school has begun!

I also love May. We are getting to where our warm days are going to be a constant. So nice to see all the colors of the blooming tulips. I have lived here quite awhile and still don’t have any hyacinth planted. It is my favorite smell and I miss it every Spring. Ugh, I am not a Winter person. It is nice to be getting out into the sun. Been getting our bikes in order here. My tires always go flat over the Winter and my daughter was looking pathetically overgrown on hers. She was happy to move up to a bigger size. Spring Fever is rampant.

Happy to be catching up, had some laptop problems at a busy time. Glad all systems are going again.

Happy Mother’s Day. Be sure to check out IW’s tribute to moms.
