Take the Yoplait / Chobani Greek Yogurt Taste-Off

By IW Team Member 232 Comments

TweetPinEmailPrintYummlyLinkedInLikeShare

This taste test was sponsored by Yoplait, but I was given the creative freedom to honestly express my opinions.

When we at Imperfect Women were invited to participate in the Yoplait Greek Taste-Off, I was excited. I’ve been eating yogurt since I was a kid (back when Yoplait was the “fancy” kind!), and have watched with some bemusement as the Greek yogurt craze took off. I *love* yogurt.

First, let’s meet the yogurts.

yoplait_chobani_instore

Also, I’ve never been invited to participate in a taste test, as far as I can remember, so naturally this was a big deal to me to do this and do it right. I decided that I couldn’t do this alone – I needed an assistant (and guinea pig).

The participants.

Jennie school photo, circa 1978Me, aged (mumble, cough, mumble), although somewhat younger in the picture.
A cat sitting in a boxFinn, aged 10 months (also pictured somewhat younger).

No adorable kittens were harmed in the course of this taste test. The Internet, which hasn’t lied to me yet, tells me that yogurt is actually good for cats.

I considered a blind taste test, but then decided that Finn probably wouldn’t take to a blindfold, anyway. He’s kind of bitey when stressed. (Actually, he’s kind of bitey all the time. Finn just really likes biting. But no reason to actually give him an excuse.)

Plus which, being a cat, he can’t read the labels. So that worked out.

Yoplait and Chobani

My preliminary expectations were that I’d probably prefer the Yoplait. I used to really dislike fruit-at-the-bottom yogurt when I was younger. I’ve gotten over it and found some fruit-at-the-bottom yogurts that are really good. But I still have a slight preference for blended yogurt, and my heart kind of belongs to Yoplait, the fancy yogurt of my childhood.

My conclusion: the Yoplait was more visually appealing upon opening; the Chobani had a watery layer on top (which to be fair isn’t uncommon with yogurt, and may be more common with fruit-at-the-bottom yogurt). Once stirred, though, I liked the taste and texture of the Chobani better. It was creamy and had a very good blueberry flavor. The Yoplait was okay – I liked that it didn’t have artificial sweeteners and has real pieces of fruit but for me the texture wasn’t as creamy… Also, it had a faintly powdery aftertaste. That might be the “Greek” aspect of the yogurt; I’ve noted before that Greek yogurts can taste a little funky to me and have gritty or even metallic aftertastes. On the other hand, I noted that one of the ingredients in the Yoplait (but not the Chobani) was cornstarch; that might account for the powderiness.

DSC_7670_cropped

Finn’s preliminary expectations: None; he is a kitten.

Finn’s conclusions: Inconclusive. He was pretty indifferent to both, to be honest. (I guess HE doesn’t know about the health benefits of yogurt for kitties!) If anything, he may have expressed a slight partiality to the Yoplait.

yogurt_cat_reaction_2up

So, final results for the Best Greek Yogurt Taste Test: Chobani: 1 Yoplait ½ (we’ll count Finn’s half-hearted preference as half a vote), Sorry, Yoplait, but you are still my all-time favorite in regular yogurts!

Finn and I have taken Yoplait Taste Test; why don’t you? Let us know who won your Yoplait vs Chobani Taste-Off.

Loved this post, too funny! I think my cat would tear my face off if I tried to put a blindfold on her, so it’s probably good you opted to leave that off. As for the yogurt, I actually like the Yoplait Greek yogurt the best so far.

Well, well. You learn something new every day. I had no idea Yoplait MADE GREEK YOGURT. My grocery store definitely carries Chobani (I have it!) and Yoplait reguar yogurt (got that too). Next time I shop I’ll ask them to order the Yopliat Greek so I can try it.

I will not get fruit-on-the-bottom though. I am 100% a plain or blended yogurt girl, no matter the nationality or flavor.

I have changed so much over the last year. I like plain unflavored Greek yogurt with real fruit in it. I got into this pesky habit of turning packages over and reading the ingredient lists. Good for the health, bad for the time schedule as it takes a lot more work.

I’ve not taken this challenge as I can’t have dairy… how annoying, right? Before the kind doctor told me I should not have dairy, I was trying to force myself to like Greek Yogurt.. I just couldn’t do it. The fruit on the bottom… I’m just not a fan. I’m sure I’d like the blended option!

Megan, plain Greek yogurt is a good and healthy alternative to sour cream in dishes (though I love sour cream, too!).

Ashley Gill, I’ve tried almond milk yogurt once, but I didn’t like it. The texture was wrong, and even though I like almonds I didn’t really like that flavor in my yogurt. Have you tried any of the soy yogurts on the market?

I’m of the same generation as Jennie and yes, Yoplait was (is!) considered fancy! Mom always insisted on store brands (aka generics) and they never tasted quite the same. I haven’t taken the taste test yet, but will. I’m the kind of girl who changes her mind a lot though. I’ll probably like one more and then get bored and switch to the other. I don’t know if it’s really better for me, but I am 100% on the Greek yogurt bandwagon. I like the creaminess and texture. Yum!

I love yogurt! I agree that Chobani is watery on top and it’s a pain to stir it. If you don’t stir it just right, you don’t get fruit in every bite. I like the idea of the yogurt already being stirred so it tastes as good in every bite!

I absolutely love yogurt and I was so excited to try Greek yogurt. I don’t like it at all. I was expecting something different.

I am not a huge fan of yogurt. Meaning, I don’t buy it on a regular basis. But every once in a while I’ll get a hankering for it. Now I’m going to get both of these this weekend when I get groceries & take the test!

This is so cute! I definitely prefer Yoplait, and it’s for the same reason you said. I think having fruit on the bottom yogurts as a kid has scarred me for life! 🙁

I’m not big on greek yogurt of any kind. I think it is too thick.

Not a huge fan of greek yogurt because it’s so thick and sour, I’ve had Chobani lots of different flavors, but I haven’t tried yoplait yet so I guess I’ll try it. I like the yocrunch.

Hilarious to involve the cat lol!! I am surprised he didn’t care, but thanks for the taste off and reviews, I never quite know what to look for when it comes to buying yogurts, this probably helped!!

Very interesting, and I guess I need to break down and get out of my yoplait comfort zone and try the other. I might surprise myself!

I prefer Chobani because they seem to have a better selection of flavors. While traveling with my dad recently I had some coconut Chobani for dessert after very spicy Thai food. YUM.
