Sonnet 73
That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruined choirs, where late the sweet birds sang.
In me thou seeβst the twilight of such day
As after sunset fadeth in the west;
Which by and by black night doth take away,
Deathβs second self, that seals up all in rest.
In me thou seeβst the glowing of such fire,
That on the ashes of his youth doth lie,
As the deathbed whereon it must expire,
Consumed with that which it was nourished by.
This thou perceivβst, which makes thy love more strong,
To love that well which thou must leave ere long.
by William Shakespeare
Labor Day weekend! It’s the last hurrah of Summer! The children are back in school and the pools will closing for us seasonal people. What will you be doing to enjoy this three-day weekend? I know many will be planning a traditional cook-out. Want your work of manning the grill to be successful? Master Chef contestant, Sharone Hakman, gave some great tips in his interview with Pattypie. Did you know your meat should be brought to room temperature before throwing it on the fire?
September 6th is Read a Book Day. Last month’s Book Crush Monthly Giveaway was Shooting Scars by Karina Halle. Check in to see what this month will bring. As always, be sure to look for Jen’s latest book reviews. Jen most recently reviewed Ruin by Rachel Van Dyken
The 8th of September brings us to Grandparents Day. Many schools and churches will be taking time to honor our grand ones. Stop in to tell us if and how you will be celebrating. Emil tells us what schooling was like for some of those from the greatest generation in Memories Of A One Room School.
Also taking place on the 8th, is National Pet Memorial Day. A day to remember the special members of our family to which we have had to say goodbye. The memories of our lost pets are bittersweet, sorrow at having to let them go mixed the recall of the good times we were blessed to have them, I cannot put into words as to what two of my dogs meant to me and how special they were. The love of animal is an amazing thing. Then, there are those other animals we bring into our homes that are not destined for a long life. The lighter side of coping with the life-span of those little critters can be found in Mommy! My Goldfish Learned To Float!
Fall will soon have the leaves changing their colors and officially begins on September 22nd. I am still not ready to bid farewell to Summer. But, time pays me no mind. It always ends whether I want it to or not. I do love the crisp cool air of Autumn as I am missing the lazy and fun days of Summer.
National Women’s Friendship Day also occurs on the 22nd. A day that is truly meant for IW. Where would we be without the love and support of our imperfect friends? The good times and conversations that have taken place over our years together mean a lot to me. A big wave and hug to all of our old friends and also a welcome to the new!
September 22nd is Elephant Appreciation Day. Which brings us to our IW Classic Of The Month, Baby Elephants Get An Upgrade. Baylor and Tupelo are two young elephants at the Houston Zoo who get to enjoy time in their very own swimming pool.
Have you taken our poll on the Tooth Fairy? Our latest Poll-Talk is an extra fun one. Is your fairy punctual, always arriving on time? Or, does she sometimes miss the mark and show up a little late? Share your traditions and read what others do when it’s time to cash-in the baby teeth.
Don’t forget to enter our latest giveaways! The link to IW’s giveaways can be found on sidebar on the right.
We would also like to give a shout out to everyone with a birthday or anniversary this month! Let us know in the comment section below so we can celebrate with you. As always, grab your coffee, tea or wine and feel free to use this thread for open discussion.

I love the sonnet.
Welcome Autumn. It’s not my favorite season any more, but had been for most of my life. I guess because I am getting old, I prefer Spring now. I do love the food the best though. Pumpkin pie, roast chicken, mashed potatoes, all the tomatoes!
Waving hello to all the gals!
I think I would like fall better if I lived closer to snickers and could share in some of her garden bounty!
Hope you are all enjoying this glorious fall weekend!
I am sure going to miss summer. Fall is very beautiful with the leaves turning all kinds of bright colors… but I would trade it for summer year round if I had my drathers. I can’t believe fall is upon us already.
September is a big month for me with lots of birthdays. My mom, nieces, nephews etc. I can’t believe that summer is over but I’m looking forward to fall. I love the cool weather although I’m not a big fan of the rain. π
wow looks like you have great things going on!!
I love the sonnet, looks like you have lots to look forward to .
It’s a great time of the year. September tends to be hotter here than the summer months, but once we’re through that it’s glorious autumn, with Thanksgiving and Christmas around the corner! Yay!
Lots of dates in September! I’m in India and we have even more to add to it since I’m american and want my kids to know about US holidays I’ll have to use this to keep a list.
September has certainly come upon us quickly. Before we know it, it will be time for the holidays and, you are right, there will be a lot of preparation and events.
There are many days…though i just know about labor day :P, Hey the road in this picture resembles very much to my area. I know this is not the same but very much similar…wait i am sharing an image with you https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-LcjBsye4YTY/UiQwgRbJ36I/AAAAAAAAAUA/xd1k-q-O9QM/w514-h685-no/2304406228_816145a7c1_o.jpg
Best of luck for all this and thanks for sharing π
Please don’t remind me it’s September…one week to go until my eldest starts school, sob! Heehee
But yes, I love Autumn (or Fall for you Americans) and it also means Halloween is almost here, yippee
I’m so sad to see the summer go π
What a gorgeous picture – I do love the Autumn one of my favourite seasons (the other being spring) the colours are just amazing. x
Thank you for sharing the sonet- beautiful. Sounds like we can all make September an amazing, wonderful month!
I didn’t realize that September 8th was remember a pet day. September is such a colorful month in our area with the leaves turning colors in the mountains.
Elephant appreciation day? Really. Man we have a day for everything it seems. I remember when grandparents day started, my grandmother thought it was the best thing since sliced cheese.
I cry at the end of summer π But, I do have a September birthday, so hurray! Also, I remember a kid in grade school who’s bday was on Grandparent’s Day and we always made so much fun of him. What an odd thing to make fun of someone for!
I never heard of National Womenβs Friendship Day! Sounds so much fun!
Beautiful sonnet!
Today for Labor Day we are going to my husband’s aunt’s house for a grill out.
I never knew about September 8th being National Pet Memorial Day – that’s really good to know. I will have to do a little something to remember the pet’s I have lost in my lifetime.
For Grandparent’s Day, I am making my daughter’s grandparents something to give to them.
I can’t wait to see the beauty of Fall but I still have to go to the beach with family before Summer ends.
Definitely would miss the “summer” my one and only favorite season of the year! Fall seems not good this year as the leaves on the trees are already turning brown.
Definitely penciling in Read A Book Day so that I don’t forget that I finally have a legitimate reason to blow off housework and relax with a book for at least one day. The 22nd sure is a busy day marking a new season, women’s friendship, and the appreciation of elephants!
I wish I had time to read a book everyday, but I do take time out every day to read. I am really looking forward to fall. I hope you enjoyed your weekend!
This 3 day weekend, we were going to bbq but money wouldn’t allow for it. Maybe another time. Just sat around watching tv/movies.
As for the Tooth Fairy, I don’t have kids but I took the poll and chose that “We Don’t Believe in the Tooth Fairy.” I’m not sure what I will do when I have kids but I’m thinking I wont bother will the whole tooth fairy thing because I don’t understand it myself. But it is fun for the kids I’m sure.
I am so glad September is here and fall is on the way! Although, September is usually still very warm where I live, it is much closer to the cooler fall temps. π
Fall starts another busy time in my neck of the woods. Soon you will see combines rolling through the fields harvesting the bounty of corn and soybeans. It’s always a little cooler, but nice sunny days makes a perfect picture, to see one’s hard work pay off. Maybe I will post a pic or two!
The last stages of my garden is about done, the tomato’s have been very nice this year. Looking forward to cleaning things off, and let the earth rest for another season to be reborn when springs temps arrive again. π
I am so thankful you are sharing all of these dates with us, I knew about Grandparents Day but who knew about all of these other days. September is such an exciting time of the year. We celebrated the Labor Day holiday with friends and family.
8 sept always makes me nostalgic as my grand father died just a few days before . But I am happy sept is here , means fall π
September means the beginning of fall sports – basketball league started today, school basketball starts october 16, fall soccer starts Monday.
My oldest daughter is a senior, we have a few college visits scheduled.
Still dealing with a few health issues, just taking one day at a time.
stxmom,
Keep us posted on the BB season, and prayers for you in dealing with health issues.
Snickers, I had nice tomatoes too. My beans and peas and zucchini were not great, if you can believe it.
I put in some cool weather plants- lettuces and broccoli- hoping to keep them going for a few weeks more.
stxmom,
Busy time a year and busy mom! What an exciting time for your daughter! Is she thinking about going out of state or staying local?
Hope everything with your health shows a steady improvement.
Ann,
Glad you had some good harvest from the garden, some things do better than others according to weather. My carrots were half the crop this year, too dry here. They say around here less than 30 days until first frost, so have been cleaning up the garden and flower beds already, things just dried up faster this year.
My son’s birthday was Sept. 11, my husband’s is the 22nd. Mine, alas, is just over the edge in to October on the 2nd.
My absolute favorite time of year! My favorite past times in the fall are taking a long ride to see the leaves and I also like to curl up on a brisk day with a pumpkin coffee and a good book.
Happy first day of Fall to everyone! It was a beautiful day here.
Been busy with homeschooling but we are starting to get into the swing of it. I miss my IW fix and friends.
Snickers it was such a good growing season here. It was the nicest Summer we have had in a long time. Gardens were bountiful and everyone had tomatoes they were trying to get rid of. Our indulgence in fried green tomatoes was larger than usual. The best thing about this Summer is I don’t remember the tornado sirens going off at all. That’s unusual around here. They are so friggen loud they feel like they are going to stop my heart. Lovin that they have been quiet. Our Fall is shaping up beautifully, leaves are starting to change and the nights are getting a little chilly.
stxmom, Best of luck to your daughter in her Sr. year and also on the team!
KarenD, happy birthday to your husband today.
Lily,
The air is crisp in the evenings now, crickets are chirping and crops in the fields are drying down quickly. A few combines are being seen in the fields, the corn looks like a up and down crazy maze this year. Looking forward to Oct and some warm days and cool nights, the changing of the colors outside. Pumpkin and apples are the right mix this time of year. Glad your garden did well. π
Just wanted to share the new show on ABC “The Blacklist” is great. This will be a real winner this season.
Snickers,
Thanks, I think my husband is recording this one but I need to ask him. I just looked at the website and it does look good.
