Sunday Morning

By Pam@IW

By Kimberly Field

Sunday morning came early for me today – 5:17am to be exact. I woke and rose without a plan or motivation to do the same old Sunday routine – chores to be specific. Heaps of laundry, bathroom horrors, kitchen catastrophes and a 45-minute pickup everything that’s been flung on the floor for a week hard labor before the vacuuming.

I could get the kids to help with this; however, I was not in the mood for the asking-begging-yelling sing and dance routine that I would normally have to do to reach their cooperation. Also, I didn’t have the gumption or the energy to do it myself. Like I said, no plan – no motivation.

I turned on my computer (high-speed is not really high-speed anymore…word to my internet provider). So while I waited for it to boot up, I washed my face and brushed my teeth. I returned to the computer and checked my email, Face book and Blog site. After I made my bed I sat down on it and grabbed a book I was reading. Two sentences in…I put it back on my night stand. I pulled on a pair of track pants and sweat shirt. Because everyone was still sleeping I grabbed my car keys and went for a drive – escape to be accurate.

Driving around with no destination was a little boring but at least I wasn’t doing any housework. I started to think about how my Sunday mornings use to be like years ago when there wasn’t so many demands and responsibilities. I began to create a full-out fantasy of the perfect Sunday morning.

I would sleep in till 8:00 or 9:00 am (I know it’s early but it’s still sleeping in for me). The coffee machine would have been set the night before so I could wake smelling the aroma. I’d take my coffee, newspaper and book into the living room or out on the patio. Still in my pajamas and wrapped with a blanket I would curl up and enjoy the silence. Light a candle or two and just lounge. I wouldn’t move for a couple of hours. Then for the second half of my morning I would indulge in a huge omelet-type breakfast with fresh fruit on the side and a pot of herbal tea. Turn on a new-release DVD or old black and white movie and lounge some more.

I imagined my Sunday morning till I was driving into my driveway. My extra long day-dream was halted by reality. In order for me to have one of those Sunday mornings again I would have to rent a hotel room. ….hey, now that’s a possibility.?! I think I just made a plan I can get motivated about.

What’s your idea of a perfect Sunday morning?

Sunday morning is one of the nicest times of the week. My husband and I have a coffee maker in our bedroom, so we always have coffee in bed together. We  go to 9:30 mass at our church which is in the next block, chat with our friends and priests afterwards, then head home to make waffles or sometimes just bacon and potatoes together for a real indulgence! Once in a while we’ll go to the breakfast place in the next block.  After that, we often head back to bed for a late morning nap. It’s almost always like this, unless we have company, which we do enjoy. The rest of Sunday, I usually cook/bake and talk on the phone with my sisters, and my husband gets things ready for the next week, or just reads etc. I’m already smiling at thinking of this Sunday……….

My husband and I do our grocery shopping on Sunday mornings. Early, very early. Usually at 7 am.  From September until the end of January we must do this so that we are back and settled for Sunday football. Even on the off season we are out the door early because we like to get our day started. There is always some cleaning and laundry to do when I get back from the store.

I would have to say that the above scenario is not my idea of a perfect Sunday morning. I think going for a long walk with the dogs or a nice bike ride would top my list. A nice breakfast other than cold cereal or toast would fit in that picture somewhere. I would also love to just sit and read the newspaper. Really read it. Also good conversation on the phone with my family always tops the list.

    Current Sunday morning –

I get up around 6:30 because my son is usually up and making noise.  I will get us some breakfast, unload and start to reload the dishwasher, and throw a load of laundry in the wash.  The around 8:00, I  log on to the computer to chat with online friends who live in places where it is much later.  I vist with my friends, check email, and catch up on a few forums I participate in.   Around 10:00-10:30, I log off.  If I have afternoon plans,  I will usually go shower and get ready for the rest of the day.  If not,  I move the first load of clothes to the dryer and put another in the wash.  Then I curl up on the sofa and watch TV for a while – usually either whatever is one TLC or HGTV.  Sometimes, I will watch an old movie I like.  By noon, my son usually wants a ride somewhere and I will take him.

This is not too offf from my ideal Sunday morning except in that scenario that dishes and laundry get taken care of by someone else.  And rather than curl up on the coach, I get motivated to go for a walk and focus on the spiritual aspects of nature.

Sundays begin with a pot of coffee – well, everyday does, but Sunday I can actually sit around and enjoy my cup of joe! Breakfast and church, then typically off to the pool – lunch at home – then a nice nappy-poo! Ah, I LOVE Sundays!

My “ideal” Sunday, which happens sometimes, involves waking up at 8:30 a.m. or so and feeling fully rested. After hopping in the shower, I get dressed and check email, etc. Then I head out to Borders or Barnes and Noble for coffee and a scone/muffin. Typically, my sister goes with me and my teen (once in a while). I bring at least four weeks worth of the New Yorker magazine and see how many articles I can plow through. If time allows, I stay an hour and a half or so.

After that, a movie or maybe some retail therapy – not for anything I “need” however – just for fun.

Getting back early enough to take a nap is always a goal. Sometimes I will lounge and watch the baseball games or one of those corny Housewives shows that I have DVR’d, but not watched yet.

I am probably heading into the afternoon at this point, but I also love to spend a couple of hours gardening.

Rose, you’re Sundays sound awesome to me!

As Sundays are now,I wake up around 8 or 9.  Usually start wash and then cook for my family and mother. Sunday dinners are usually at our place.

Around 6, everyone goes home and I get about an hour nap. Then, I get some work done for my job for the next day.   Hopefully, I am in bed by 10pm.

On Sunday game days, everyone is still here later than 6, so it’s usally a party.

I still prefer to have Rose’s Sundays! 🙂  Just reading about it made me relax and realize that’s what Sunday is supposed to be about…a day of rest. I think I might have to start a new routine for Sunday!

I agree, Rose’s Sundays sound wonderful.  What a pleasant routine.
My  Sundays don’t really have a routine.  Like a lot of you, I do wash.  A lot of times, I will cook a couple of main dishes to start off the week.   When my little girl was younger, I loved to get up to have the morning to myself.  I’d have my tea and watch I Love Lucy on Nick or Tvland (can’t remember which).  I hadn’t seen them in awhile.  I’d watch while I read something.  It was a nice way to start the week.   I was mad when they changed to The Brady Bunch and ruined my routine.

My perfect Sunday morning would be sleeping until 9 am with out interruption (i.e. garbage trucks…loud motorcycles or landscapers!), coffee, a book or crochet project and the smells of some one making me breakfast!

Right now it’s a hit the ground running kinda morning it seems! Hopefully with school being out it will slow down!

Oh, I vote for Rose’s Sunday too.  Sundays are for mass, chatting with or visiting  family, extra coffee, leisurely breakfasts, and NAPS.  I prefer my naps to the background noise of a NASCAR race (or Formula One) on TV.  I can’t nap in my bed.

Like Paige, I make time for online friends on Sunday, too.  Paige is more disciplined than I am!  😉

I prefer early mass, but my teens sleep in until the last possible minute, so I haven’t had an ideal Sunday for awhile.
