Steak & Mushroom Pie…Cooked In A Crock Pot!

Steak Pie Photo

Some of you may remember just a few weeks ago we did an interview with Chef Pauline McAloon.  She is the businesswoman/mom/home cook turned Master Chef contestant! After the last recipe Pauline made for us, we asked her if she would consider doing some more recipes for us and to our delight she said YES!

Steak & Mushroom Pie…Cooked in a Crock Pot!

By Chef Pauline McAloon

Traditionally in Scotland Steak Pie was something that was cooked in a “Pie Tin”, and topped with homemade pastry. It was a dish that the “grannies” made on a Sunday for the whole family, in the days when Mum, Dad, kids, aunts, uncles, the world and his wife actually…would go to visit granny after Church.

We were no different, come rain or shine, off we all went looking forward to a pie that was made with love from a woman who cooked all day, every day for her family. That was her “job”. Granddad worked, Granny cooked and baked. I miss it. Great memories and I feel blessed to have them. Now I’m making these memories with my daughter and teaching her how to make grannies pie with my no fuss “modern” version.

The pie itself is easy, but homemade puff pastry is an art form! It took me many, many, many attempts at it before I came anywhere close to my Gran’s pastry. Honestly I don’t have the time to fuss with it, so I found a way to make it a little easier. Store bought pastry! This easy recipe will give you the same results of a “traditional steak pie” without the fuss and worry of the tenderness of the beef and making perfect pastry!

I love how easy it is to adapt this recipe. You can take out the mushrooms and add kidney for steak and kidney pie, or add pork link sausages (or even Italian) for sausage and steak pie. You can also use the basic recipe and add, onion, carrots, celery & thyme and turn the dish into a “One Pot Stew” Practically any vegetables that you have will work! Endless possibilities!

I have also included my recipe for Horseradish and Rosemary Creamy Mashed Potatoes, which go really well with the pie.

I hope you enjoy making this dish and your family will think you spent all day in the kitchen! Our secret…”From my Heritage to Yours.”

Steak & Mushroom Pie…Cooked in a Crock Pot!

Ingredients: Serves 6 Time 5hrs plus Prep time 15 minutes.

I used a 4 quart Crock Pot

2lbs Stewing Steak – Diced
2 cloves garlic – finely chopped
1 tbsp Worcester sauce
80z Baby Bella mushroom – pre-sliced
½ red wine – Merlot preferably. The alcohol will cook out
3 cups beef stock
½ cup flour
1 ½ tsp Kosher Salt
½ tsp pepper
1 box store bought puff pastry

Method:

Toss beef in flour, shake off excess put in crock pot/slow cooker.
Add all the other ingredients. Stir to incorporate.
Cook on High for 5hrs. Avoid checking on dish for the first two hours. Or cook on low for 8-10hrs.
Note: If the gravy is a little to “thin” you can thicken it by putting 2-4 tsp of flour into a cup, add water to make a thick paste, add to stew, stir.

Pastry: pre-heat oven to 400f
Defrost 1 sheet of pastry. 1 egg beaten
Place pastry baking sheet. Unfold to one sheet. Cut pastry into 9 squares.(if you unfold the pastry while it’s still frozen it will be in 3 oblong pieces, cut those 3 into 3). Brush with beaten egg and cook in oven for 20-25 minutes, till risen and golden brown. Plate steak & mushrooms, place one or two pieces of puff pastry on top, serve potatoes on the side.

I am more of a pressure cooker girl.
And what I am about to say is not going to win me that new slow cooker, but I got a new slow cooker as a gift last Christmas that I haven’t even used yet.

I took it out of the box ~LOL

This time of year crockpot cooking is a must. Set and go, would be a nice feature to have. This would be nice to take to the field. Hoping to win this new addition to my kitchen. Love the recipes that she is willling to share. I take a crockpot to the machine shed during harvest, plug it in and let our late meals be served right from there.

So in a way I am being forced to use my new crock pot/slow cooker.

  16. Jennie@IW says

    September 29, 2011 at 2:55 pm

Adele, I agree – “crockpot cooking” is one of the things I think of when I think of fall!
    .
I once made homemade puff pastry, for a homemade napoleon torte that was probably the acme of my baking career. I was surprised that it came out pretty good (it actually puffed!), but it was kind of a lot of work, and no better, certainly, than store-bought puff pastry.
    .
This dish looks yummy – it looks like you could top it with biscuits, maybe, instead?

  17. Anya@IW says

    September 29, 2011 at 3:23 pm

    The alcohol will cook out
    .
Well that is a shame. I kid! Seriously, this looks so delish. Imagine coming home to this dish after a hard day at work. What a reward. I also appreciate the tip for the horseradish/rosemary mashed potatoes. I think that will add a nice flavor to my next batch.
    .
    Thanks Pauline & Patty!

Hah! I have been cooking all summer with two hotplates,a countertop convection oven, a barbecue grill, and an old beat up crockpot. I have cooked up the whole “almost farm” with this stuff. My stove and oven died and I have been saving for a new one. I have considered using the bathtub and throwing in rocks heated on a hotplate to use as a larger crockpot, but I need the bathtub for, well, taking a bath. Yes!!! I want a new larger crockpot!
P.S. This recipe sounds good, but because nobody else here likes mushrooms I think I’ll try adding potatoes instead. I suppose I’ll start heating the rocks. LOL.

OK I guess I will be the first to put a recipe up.
    Stuffed Cabbage Rolls.
    1 head green cabbage
    1 lb ground beef
    1 cup cooked white rice
    1 egg, beaten
    1/4 cup milk
    1/2 tsp garlic salt
    1/2 tsp salt
    3/4 tsp pepper

Core cabbage. Boil until leaves fall off. Mix all other ingredients. Place 1/4 cup of meat mixture in center of cabbage leaves. When leaves get too small use two. Place seam side down in crockpot.

    For the tomato sauce
Take 3 cans of tomatoes (or frozen equivalent), 1/4 cup fresh basil, 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil and 3 tsp. of garlic. Simmer 5 mins. Then puree. Throw the sauce on top of the cabbage rolls and cook on low 8 hours.
    I hope you enjoy this.

I made this recipe my own by making a few changes and it’s just scrumptious, easy and affordable!

    Asia Chicken Delight
    3 lbs mixed chicken pieces
    1 1/2 c Salsa (mild or hot)
    3/4 c Unsweetened Coconut Milk
1/2 c Almond Butter (can sub Peanut Butter)
    2 T Lime Juice
1 tsp Powdered Ginger (or use fresh)
    1 sm can Bamboo Shoots
    4-6 Fresh Basil Leaves (optional)

    Jasmine Rice – cooked separately

Chopped or Sliced Almonds for topping
2 T Chopped Fresh Cilantro or Parsley for topping

Wash chicken and place into crockpot.
Mix together the next 5 ingredients and pour over chicken pieces.
Top with the bamboo shoots & the fresh basil leaves.

Cover and cook on low 8-9 hrs or on high 3-4 hrs until done.
Serve over Jasmine Rice with sauce on top.
    Top with nuts & cilantro.

  66. Margo says

    October 4, 2011 at 11:16 am

I’ll bet one could easily sub Chicken in Chef Paula’s recipe! As for the wine, maybe you could sub a not too sweet juice like unsweetened cranberry juice? Also I did a search for alcohol-free wine and it is available!

  67. pattypie says

    October 4, 2011 at 12:56 pm

From Pauline – The wine can easily be left out, it just gives the dish a layer of richness, you could add a tablespoon or two of tomato puree instead.

That is the absolute best slow cooker ever. I can actually make good roasts in it. It also motivated me to learn how to make good mashed potatoes to go with the delicious roasts. I use cream cheese and sour cream to mash my potatoes and they dont turn out runny which is my peeve. My monthly big pot of bean stew cooks quite nicely in there also

My favorite crock pot recipe is so simple.
    Crock Pot Mexican Chicken
4 boneless skinless chicken breasts (I put them in frozen)
1 can corn, drained (or the equivalent in frozen corn)
    1 can black beans, undrained
    1 small jar of salsa
    Cook on Low 8-10 hours.

I sometimes add about 1/2 cup of brown rice to soak up a little of the liquid and serve it as a meal.
But tonight, I’m going to chop the chicken, add some shredded cheese, and put it all in tortillas to make quesadillas. Yum!

Thanks for the recipe! I just found your site looking for just this very type of thing! I’m a graduate student also working three jobs, and at least three days a week, I’m on the run from work to class from 7 in the morning to 9:30 at night. I get a half hour in between work and school for dinner. I tried to use my crock pot so that I’d be able to actually cook, but I can’t leave the food unattended for nine hours without it overcooking. I would LOVE to have a crock pot with a programmable timer- then I could make the filling for this pie on regular weeknights as well, instead of sandwich, sandwich, pasta, pasta, sandwich!

I am the Crock Pot queen! Can’t live without it… but mine is a bit small and old… I could really use an upgrade!

My favorite recipe isn’t really a recipe, since I made it up:
Cubed steak (anything cheap works since it slow cooks and gets tender)
1 can chopped tomatoes (Italian Recipe is the best) with juice
    Broccoli Florets
    Cauliflower Florets
    1 Can Cut Green Beans
    1 Can Corn
    1 Can Water
1-2 Packages Beef Stew Seasoning (to taste)

On Low for 6-8 hours… So yummy! Serve with Corn Bread (or Any Bread)

I really need a brand-new Crock Pot, because the one I’m using I received as a wedding present in 1985! Still works like a charm, but it only has two settings, low and high! 🙂 That being said, I cook in my CP about four or five times a WEEK! Favorite recipe:

CHOCOLATE COVERED CASHEWS W/ SEA SALT! Mmmmmm!

1 bag of your fav milk chocolate chips
3 Tbsps of creamy peanut butter

Put in the CP on high for 30 mins and the low for another 30 mins.

Lift the lid ONLY after this hour! Stir the chocolate chips and peanut butter until creamy! If not quite melted, cover for a few more mins.

Mix in about a cup and a half to two cups of cashews.

Drop by spoonfuls onto waxed paper.

Give each a quick shake of sea salt.

Let them set up (fridge makes this happen faster).

ENJOY! Best and easiest chocolate treat EVER! 🙂

    Super Easy Crockpot Cherry Cobbler

2 cans cherry (or other fruit) pie filling
    1 box yellow cake mix
    1 stick butter
    handful of nuts (optional)

This recipe is SUPER easy and Super yummy!!
Mix butter and yellow cake mix in a bowl until crumbly (keep working it…it won’t seem like one stick of butter is enough, but it is)and set aside. Pour cans of pie filling in bottom of crockpot. Sprinkle crumb mixture over top and and nuts if you like. Cook on high for 2 hours or low for 4hours. ENJOY!!

OK, I have one last recipe to contribute.
    These will call to you!!

    Hot & Sweet Sugared Almonds

    1 c Granulated Sugar (I use Turbinado)
3 T (heaping) Cinnamon (I use sweet Ceylon Cinnamon)
    1/4 tsp Sea Salt
1/4 tsp Powdered Cayenne (adjust to taste)
    1 Egg White
    1 T Vanilla Extract
3 c Whole Raw Almonds (Or nut of your choice. Walnuts also work great!)

Spray inside of crockpot with non-stick spray
Ccmbine dry ingredients in a small bowl

In another small bowl, combine egg white & vanilla extract.
Add the nuts to this bowl & stir to coat.
Sprinkle the nuts with the dry ingredients gradually, stirring to coat them.

Pour the nuts into the crockpot and cover for 2 hrs, stirring occasionally
Then pour the nuts out onto a cookie sheet or plates to cool.

These nuts are so delicious! They will call to you! LOL!
These would make a great Christmas gift or Hostess gift or any time gift!
    I hope you enjoy them!.
