I was not really into the Super Bowl this year because the Packers were spanked and sent home by the 49ers several weeks ago. However, today I read that the NFL flew the Sandy Hook Elementary School chorus to New Orleans and is paying for their stay at a hotel. Wonderful news and something to look forward to!
Twenty-six members of this chorus will sing “America the Beautiful” with Academy Award and Grammy winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson. They will sing prior to the National Anthem which will be followed by the coin toss and then the kick off. Alicia Keys is signing the National Anthem this year, and I expect that she will have one tough act to follow.
It is no secret that the NFL has shown great support for the community of Newton, Connecticut and the students of Sandy Hook. In December the league’s player wore stickers on their helmets with the initials “S.H.E.S”, wrote personal messages on their cleats and gloves and had moments of silence before games. The NFL also made charitable donations. The Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, visited the family of 6-year-old victim Jack Pinto. Jack was a big fan of Victor Cruz and was burried in a No. 80 Giants jersey.
The Sandy Hook Chorus also recently teamed up with Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson and recorded a version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Proceeds from the song’s sale will go to benefit the Newton Youth Academy and the United Way of Western Connecticut.
I will look forward to seeing and hearing them sing this Sunday.
