Where we live, vacation starts the last week of June and ends in the last week of August. It feels far too short.

Keep em in school year round… Who needs a vacation… Of course, then they won’t have a topic to write about when school restarts…. What I did on my summer vacation

My kids are on a modified year-round schedule. We start school two weeks into August and go until mid June. We get an extra 2 weeks break at the end of October. I like this schedule. The fall break comes just at the right time and the summer is just long enough to relax, plan a vacation and recharge. I do think a long summer break doesn’t really benefits the kids. They forget all they have learned when not doing anything for 3 months.

You know, my kids are not in school yet so I won’t be able to answer this poll. I guess I can always come back in a year!!

My kids are homeschooled, so I’m with them ALL the time anyway. The longer vacation, the more MAMA gets time to renew. 🙂

I think Summer vacation is way too long. It’s so hard for them to go back to school and my daughter really thrives on having a routine and forgets a lot of things during Summer and has to relearn them. A couple of weeks a few times per year would work best for kids and for parents too. Both hubby and I are working from home this year and I have no idea how I we’re going to get enough work done to cover the bills with the kids here all day and don’t have money for camp or daycare so it will be an interesting summer.

For my special needs child, it is just too long. I would love year round school with shorter breaks. For my ‘typical’ child, it is just fine.

There is so much that children can learn through travel and being exposed to different cultures. It would really be nice to keep a long summer break, but organize learning activities.

While we have a summer break it is only 6 weeks instead of most school breaks. We are consider year round and we take a Fall Break, Winter Break, and a Spring Break. Kids need time to unwind and relax. But I agree that Summer break does take too much time away from school. That is why we still do a reading program and a few essays. We have pin palls that we write to as well 🙂 Keeps some writing, reading, and though moving instead of a complete shut down, lol.

We get 6 weeks here – I remember when I was kid it used to feel like it flew by way to quickly 🙂 x

I’m torn because I remember the joy of the summer vacations of my youth, but in some ways I do think year-round schools with several extra two week breaks built in make more sense. I think different things work for different kids, though.

I’m not really sure where I stand since my child is not in school yet. But I always enjoyed my summer vacations when I was a kid. However, my cousins out west had to go to school year round when they were kids and they just got long breaks off every so often and they liked that too.

I think there is so much learning that kids need to do that goes beyond school and passing the achievement test. Things like swimming all day with your cousins, going fishing with grandpa, having a summer job, doing a hobby are great for kids. Having said that, for many families, with little local extended family and both parents or a single parent needing to earn income, summer is in front of the tv or video game console. I’d love the idea for families to have the option of summer enrichment programs but if there isn’t even enough funding for the regular school year, it isn’t going to happen.

For all those saying that “Summer should be longer because my child forgets tasks learned in school”, I hope some of you realize that you can just enroll your children in Academic summer programs. It isn’t that hard to send them to a camp that will give them the skills for the next grade. Also, a good resource is a “Bridge Book” which seals the gap of summer by giving children daily activities to keep their mind moving. All in all, Summer is good because children need to renew and take breaks, “high schoolers” stress levels are as high as asylum patients of the 1950’s and also, this decade of children are being given the most homework in school ever recorded. As an 11th Grader at a select high school, I understand that Summer can be a burden for some, but that’s because of yourself, most schools have Summer programs, that are inexpensive and teach all throughout the summer.
