Am I the only one who’s sorely disappointed in the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN)? Show of hands? I mean- its Oprah. She has every aspect of the entertainment business at her finger tips. Writers, directors, producers, actors…. clowns, jugglers, stilt walkers…
When OWN launched I was excited, but quickly found it surprisingly dull. Watching the paint dry dull. To be fair, Oprah did go directly from her daily talk show (ever hear of it?) to launching a brand new network. I expected it would take some time to build interesting programming. Eleven months later…. it still sucks.
Allow me to present you with an actual 24 hour lineup in no particular order.
10 consecutive hours of I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant (That’s right, TEN hours of women who had no clue they were housing another human- until they delivered.)
4 hours of Oprah and the Legendary Cast of Roots (which I set to record!)
4 hours of Oprah’s Oscar Special (If it airs twice a day, how “special” is it?)
3 hours of Beyond Belief
3 hours of Dr. Phil
1 hour of The New Detectives
1 hour of Turning Point
I would like to say this isn’t a typical day of OWN viewing. I would like to say I’m filthy rich and need to gain ten pounds, but I digress…
In the last year, OWN has already been overseen by three different CEO’s. First Christina Norman, then Peter Liguori, and then Oprah herself. That alone seems telling.
According to Wikipedia, during launch week OWN had an average of 505,000 viewers- by February that number fell to an underwhelming 135,000. The Oprah Winfrey Show boasted 15-20 million viewers a day.
So what do you think…… is OWN what you expected?
