No one can ever say that Apple is not ingenious when it comes to the ideas that they come up with; especially as it relates to the apps that they invent. This would include one of their newest ones. It’s called “mySkin” and it’s an iPhone app that helps you to find the kind of beauty products that will work best for you and your particular skin type.
The way that it does this is by using a particular recommendation engine called “Just Like Me”. After it asks you a series of questions about your skin (including your type of skin, diet, lifestyle and your skin’s current condition) it will then make a quick assessment and refer you to some of its best-suited product recommendations. The catalog is not sparse, either. There are currently over 160,000 different skin care brands and retailers listed within the app.
One of the main benefits of mySkin is that it makes things extremely convenient. You can do a lot of the research on your own time before even stepping into a store. This can also significantly cut down on all of the potential “upselling” that a lot of cosmetics salespeople try to do while you’re shopping. For instance, if you know that you need an astringent and mySkin recommends a particular one (or two), you don’t have to play a big guessing game. Plus, it allows you the ability to assist other people by listing your comments about your skin care “likes and dislikes” as well.
Pretty cool, right?
There can be a potential “con” to this too, though. You know, dermatologists spent a lot of time in school to be able to study various kinds of skin types. In other words, they are experts as it relates to deciding what kind of skin needs what kind of treatment and skin care regimen.
On the other hand, we as consumers…well, while we might live with our faces every day, that doesn’t always mean that we can automatically give it the proper diagnosis. There are a lot of people who would probably say that their skin is oily when it’s combination or dry when it’s normal. So, simply putting your opinion into a computer app and trusting it to give you the best results may be putting a bit too much pressure on technology. And, when it comes to the safety of cosmetics, no matter how much information that it may provide, it is not able to customize the information to suit your specific needs.
That’s not to “knock” the app. After all, people walk into stores and purchase things that they have limited information on all of the time. It’s just that sometimes we put more expectations into our computers (and all of its bells and whistles) than we should. In other words, using the app to make shopping easier is a great idea. Using the app to be your own portable skin doctor is probably not the best decision.
So, if you’re looking for a nighttime moisturizer, mySkin can probably help you out. If you have chronic acne, make a doctor’s appointment, first. An app can only do so much. And that’s a good thing.
