It’s July and the season is well underway. Hanley Ramirez (Florida Marlins) is leading the league with a .346 batting average, Tim Lincecum (San Francisco Padres) is firing up the bullpen (though the rest of the team is asleep) and the Red Sox have not one but four of their players slated to be starters in the 2009 All-Star game.
We all learned in school, though, that it is not individual players that capture championships but teams as a whole that pull together and win games. Which teams have the talent and tenacity to make it to the end? Going by standings, my money would have go to a Boston Red Sox vs. Los Angeles Dodgers series.
Who cares about standings, though, when you have a personal bias. I know that both the Dodgers and the Cardinals have better win records. I know that, at home, they’ve been horrendous and I know that the odds of a baseball team repeating a World Series is slim. Yet, even knowing all I know, the fact of the matter is that Philadelphia is not a city to succumb to statistics and probability. So with my heart (hey, I can do that because I’m an Imperfect Woman!) my National League pick is the Philadelphia Phillies. I’ll use my head for the American League and stick to Boston as my pick.
What about you?
Hmmmm, let me see. Well the Cubs for sure. I will have to get back to you. I just not into baseball as you can tell. Now, when do we start talking about football?
Baseball is my thing and I have no idea who will win. The playoffs are like a whole different season. The trading deadline is at the end of the month (July) and a lot could happen then. But the team that is hot going into the playoffs usually wins and we wont know who that team is until the end of September. Go Cubs!!!
Erin, San Francisco Padres?! That would be the GIANTS. And the rest of our team isn’t “asleep”. We are actually 8 games over .500! Hmm, in fact, if we were in the Eastern Division we would be leading now!
Perhaps you have heard of Pablo Sandoval? He would be the Giant superstar who had the race for the last spot on the All Star team *stolen* by Shane Victorino!
Ok, I am done messing with you…. 🙂
My picks to at least make it to the playoffs (completely emotionally chosen):
-Giants
-Cubs (for Jeff and Pam and because I always root for the underdog)
-Tigers (I am sick of the Red Sox and poor Detroit needs something good to happen in their city).
And that, my friend, is why we edit!!!! OMG How embarassing? I KNOW it’s the San Francicso Giants!!!! and I cannot believe I wrote San Diego. I really thought I had written the right team. When I first read your comment, I’m thinking “That’s what I said” LOL! It’s like sometimes the mind goes on autopilot. I was somewhat distracted while writing because I was simultaneously stuffing the ballot box for the all-star game, trying to get my boy Shane Victorino in (and he is!!!) and was drooling over Lincecum’s stats. I was reading that he’d probably start for the NL. I even looked several pictures of him IN UNIFORM (haha) and still wrote what I did. I don’t know what happened, LOL!. l also noticed a host of grammatical mistakes after the fact. “Who cares about standings when you have a personal bias” should have “?” at the end but whatever. I don’t think that I’m going to live that one down. I concede leading the Eastern Division. Maybe I was projecting the Phil’s being asleep at home (except last night we won!) onto you guys. What was I thinking? LOL! I’m going to hide my head in shame. But in the spirit of trash talk, Let’s resume this conversation on July 30th when the Phil’s and Giant’s face off!
P.S. As for the all-star game….guess poor Pablo’s fan’s let him down:-) We Philadelphian’s voted Victorino in like it was our full-time job! The Giant’s fans must have all been at the beach.
Well my husband picked up on the Red Socks vs Sox so I changed that. I made the same mistake a short time back. He missed the other error. And I am leaving it up there because you know, we are Imperfect Women.:)
Erin, absolutely! We have a date.
And congrats to Victorino. Philly fans have a ton of heart.
