I wonder if Nascar fans woke up this morning feeling just a little ashamed of themselves? Yesterday during the last race of the season at the Homestead Miami-Speedway, Michelle Obama and Jill Biden were booed as they announced “Gentleman, start your engines!”
The First and Second Ladies along with a retired Army Sergeant and his family served as grand marshals of the event. Their appearance was part of the White House’s Joining Forces program which is an initiative aimed to honor military service and to recognize companies planning to hire and train veterans and military spouses.
While we live in a country that affords us the right to protest, is there not a time when it is simply inappropriate? Did the fans not see the children who were standing beside the First Lady? This was not a political event. It was a sporting event that was promoting a charity which supports veterans.
In my humble opinion there is a time to protest by booing and there is a time to keep your mouth shut, and this event was was the time to keep your mouth shut. I don’t care what your politics are. I don’t care if you plan on voting red, blue, green or magenta in the next election. When you are attending a charity event to honor veterans, you don’t boo the First Lady who was an invited guest. No, I am not saying you have to cheer for someone who’s politics you don’t agree with, I am saying you should show a little respect. There is a time and a place for protest and booing at the First Lady, however, as she stands beside a veteran and his family is simply not that time.
