Famous power couple composed of singer Katy Perry and comedian and actor Russell Brand have announced their divorce after only fourteen months of marriage. Brand filed for divorce on Friday, December 30th, telling the press that, though he is sad about the breakup, he and Perry will continue to remain friends. The divorce papers, acquired by TMZ, cite irreconcilable differences as the reason behind the split.
The couple was married in a hush-hush ceremony in India in October 2010. Unfortunately for both stars, they did not sign a prenuptial agreement at the time of their wedding. In California, this means that they must split their earnings 50/50 which benefits Brand in particular, as Perry is worth over forty million dollars, while Brand is estimated at about fifteen million.
The media was buzzing with rumors about their less-than-tranquil marriage waters when each was spotted without their wedding bands at Christmas. Perry spent the holiday in Hawaii, while Brand visited his relatives in England, and each was reported to be ring-less. When Brand guested on the Ellen DeGeneres show in early December, his response to her question about the possibility of the couple’s marital problems prompted him to answer that his marriage to Perry was a pledge to the death, and since he was obviously alive, so, ostensibly, was their marriage.
The couple met at the 2009 VMAs and later connected on the set of Brand’s 2010 film “Get Him to the Greek,” where Perry filmed a small cameo that was eventually axed. The pair has always been considered unlikely, as Perry comes from a strict religious household in California and British Brand is a recovering addict with a frequently bawdy sense of humor and bizarre media presence. Just before their wedding, Perry reported that she considered Brand to be her life partner. Reportedly, Perry was surprised by news of the divorce, as she had recently spoken to Barbara Walters in an ABC News’ interview about the possibility of starting a family with Brand.
Since both Perry and Brand have gushed about their love affair to the press in recent months, the imminent divorce has proven surprising for many. However, there have been an increasing number of reports in the press about Perry and Brand’s epic arguments that have plagued them throughout their relationship, culminating in one enormous holiday blow-out that preceded the divorce filing. Brand has been reportedly uncomfortable with Perry’s religious beliefs as well as her tendency to party and surround herself with friends whose lifestyle choices make the recovering heroin addict uneasy. There have also been disagreements stemming from the direction each felt their relationship should take.
Despite the dissolution of their marriage, both careers continue to look bright. Perry, a pop start with number one hits such as “Fireworks” and “Last Friday Night,” was recently named MTV’s artist of the year, while Brand will be seen starring in a late-night series for FX.
Perry has yet to speak out publicly about the divorce, while Brand has remained optimistic about the upcoming year.
