Kate Gosselin has a new blog post up on Coupon Cabin and she is sharing some info on the Gosselin’s German Shepperd, Shoka. Shoka originally came to the Gosselin family in December of 2008 along with his sister, Nala.
Both pets were featured on the TLC show Jon & Kate Plus 8 when they were first brought into the Gosselin household. However, they really had their “15 minutes of fame” when they were returned to the breeder at a time when both Jon and Kate were going through a difficult divorce. Their dramatic return was filmed by one of the many paparazzi that were following the divorce drama and of course it was posted by the numerous rag mags.
In November of 2010, Kate made the decision to bring Shoka back into the family and it appears that Shoka has made himself right at home and become an intricate part of the Gosselin family. In her recent blog post she discusses the unconditional love that he doles out to the children and how in return they lovingly care for him.
Kate also gives some tips for saving on pet care and supplies and there are some great coupons that offer nice discounts at the end of the post. It wasn’t that long ago that Imperfect Women did a post titled A Few of Our Favorite Things – Pet Edition! where we discussed some our favorite pet care supplies.
How about you? What kind of pets do you have? Do you have any tips you would like to share on saving money when caring for your pets? Any special websites or stores that you know of that have great bargains?

We’ve used JB Pet Supplies for years. I’ve never odered from them online, but use their 800 # & catalog. You ask about a product & they give you a candid answer…or suggestion. We’d always had small 15 – 25 lb. dogs…but treated ourselves to a 60 lb. Standard Poodle…immediately they told us – no collar w. plastic closures. No retractable leash…etc., & the best solution for a dog who loved anything on the kitchen counters – their mouse trap flappers. The 1st time he set one off…was the last time his paws hit a counter…or a sofa. (OK…yes, he was a great footwarmer in bed!) We’re back to a 13 lb. poodle – he’s a whole other story
I have a Chihuahua (Odie),I spend a lot on Toilet Paper. Yes Toilet Paper, he will NOT stop attacking a roll of toilet paper. I find it up the stairs and down the stairs, circling around the house, under the beds. Yesterday, my brown sofa, was covered in little tiny tiny bits of toilet paper. So if there is a tip on this, I would appreciate it.
HB: wonder if the mouse trap flapper works on Grandkids. LOL
;0) Dunno about grandkids, but I tried the flapper on our rolls of toilet paper…our dog does exactly what your dog does. We had all new doors put in & I decided to go to brushed nickel, levers! Huge mistake. Not only does our dog unfurl toilet paper, but he can open the door to all the bathrooms. I’ve lined up 4 flappers, they don’t phase him at all! Totally fearless, DOES NOT BARK, but uses his nose as battering ram to signal for outside, water etc.! (We do have a parrot that barks like a huge dog!) Yes, our home is a zoo…but wouldn’t have it any other way. Cesar Millan would faint! Which reminds me…if anyone has a dog that carries their bowls around or bats them like our dog does ~ Cesar has a terrific rubberized twin bowl on locked plastic legs that we love.

LOL, our young cocker mix does. He’s the only dog I’ve ever had do this it drives me nuts. He noses and barks at several inanimate objects in our home. He has to show them who is boss. I need to do something about the food bowl.
LOL, Roozerdo. Their little quirks are so aggravating, but they are cute too.
I have minature shelties. When there water bowl is empty they will bring it to me. And they also bark at everything. Anyone have a suggestion on how to stop your dog from barking and going crazy at other dogs when walking them? It is driving me crazy.
I am really loving this Gosselin thread! These are some funny pets. I think the parrot that barks would make me nuts. Years ago, there was a day when I was gardening, and I kept hearing my phone ring. When I went in (at least 3 x) it would stop before I reached it. Finally I realized it was a mocking bird imitating my phone.
.
I think you have to train a dog to walk on a leash without barking at every other dog. Bring treats to distract, and treat quiet behavior. It takes a LOT of practice. It’s worth it though.
I will try the treat thing Ann. I have three of them that act bad, so it is going to require alot of treats. Off the lead at the dog park, they are quiet and timid.
Three??? Maybe start with the alpha? Do you ever watch “It’s Me or the Dog?” The trainer on that show is magic! She’s taught 3 dogs to walk nicely before.
My cocker mix refuses to eat dog food. One day she just refused it and would not eat it again. She lost weight and I took her to the vet to make sure nothing was wrong. The vet suggested ground chicken or turkey so, I went with that. It has been a year now and that dog will only eat ground chicken mixed with sweet potatoes and rice. I have to make it for her every single day. My other dog, a dachshund, still eats dog food altho, I feel guilty giving him dog food when he looks at what the other dog is getting and he gives me a WTH look.
THese are hilarious! Reminds me why I don’t have dog.

We have a hideous bearded dragon. It’s so gross! The boys love it though, but my daughter is obsessed with it!
I had a four foot Iguana and wish I still had her. She was alot quieter and did not bite me on the heels, herding me like I was a sheep. The alpha dog is the daddy and he is the quiet one. I NEED HELP!!! I have tried spraying them with water. When they are alone it is o.k. sometimes. Shelties are mouthy. I have heard of people having their vocal cords cut. I cannot do that. Need to get to the country and out of the city. Their son is picking up their bad habits.
To save money on vet bills, try using a vet that is not in the big city competing with other vets. It was shelter shock for me when I moved from the country to the city vets.
SOR, I have a collar with a little box that sprays a lemon scent. It does not hurt them but boy do they ever learn quickly. Only took 1 day. Now if she wants to bark, she only does this little sound because she knows that any higher, the collard will go off. 🙂 This is my 3rd standard poodle and have used it on all of them. It is a miracle worker. You can get them at any pet store.
My mom and dad used the spray collar on their dobbie and it worked well for them too.
3 Cats here. They let me live here. Oldest is 18 years, youngest is 9 months.
Sage, Really? You make this for your pup daily. Now that’s love. My HUSBAND would be giving me that WTH look. LOL
I think this is a great thread also, it makes me feel unalone with my puppy drama.
Never heard of this collar that sprays lemon scent, but will definately check it out today. When they bark and it sprays, it will be like spraying Glade in the house. Thanks for the information. I tried the box that supposedly puts off a sound. It worked for one hour and I took it back.
I am also interested in this lemon shooting collar. It might work on my yapping little cocker mix. I always trained mine with squirt guns and never really had any barkers (except for a beagle). This one just doesn’t quite get it and he’s very protective of the house, so he’s always barking if he hears something outside.
LOL, the poor stubborn beagle. It was long ago. He was such a barker that we finally tried training him with an auto-shock collar. But, we had to take it off within a couple of weeks. He didn’t care. It was always “bark bark YELP, bark bark YELP!” Oh, and when he bayed. LOL, he was so determined when he got going, I would have to drag him in the house. Other than that, he was the best little doggie.
I have 4 rabbits (2 girls, 2 boys) and they act worse than toddlers……one yellow lab that thinks he’s a lap dog, and a cat. Oh, and 2 evil teenagers. My cat is very old. The dog thinks he’s a little bitty dog and wants to sit on you when you sit down or lay down and the rabbits…..well they OWN the place.
Lily, I just bought the collar today. It is about $100.00. It is citranella in the can. I have not been home to put it on her yet. Will let you know if it works. The mama is the one that is the worse and seems to get the boys going, so I am putting it on her. If it does not stop her barking, I guess you could use it to keep the bugs away. LOL.
The guy said it works on 75 percent of dogs. We will see if it work on big mouth.
He said I can bring it back if it does not work and the next step will be a shock collar. I will have to think about that. Not sure I can go through with it.
SOR, yes, def let us know how it goes. I am surprised it is ciltranella. I am thinking it will work and probably also make him dribble.

Kate is doing an interview for Extra tomorrow. I imagine they’ll be asking her some questions about the cruise.

I love this topic! why? I love pets. SOR I feel your pain! I too have Shelties (3) of them and have had Shelties for 27 years, many dogs later I still love them. The barking and herding is part of their genitics! sorry to say…mine will bark at a leaf blowing through the yard. I did buy a shock collar a few years back but don’t shock them with it! There is a button that you can also use that gives a high frequency beep! I don’t even have to have it on them (since there are 3, plus a mut here) I just hang it on a door if inside or on the patio….if they bark un-nessarily i beep them! I have been doing this consistanly all week and it’s working! less and less barking.
I want them to bark if someone comes to the door, they just need to stop after 30 secs or so! I am also interested in that citronella collar!
I have a trick that works if your dog likes to chew on things he shouldn’t! such as pillows, socks, shoes etc…It may even work with the toilet paper bandits!
Its oldschool…when a dog would get into the chicken coop and kill a chicken, the farmer would tie the dead chicken to the collar of the dog….well I have done this with a couple of my little “angels”…one of the said a”angels” had been chewing up pillows. Once, I was able to catch the culprit in the act chewing on a pillow off the couch..so I scoulded him, told him no and tied the pillow to his collar. He hasn’t damaged anymore pillows. This has also worked on another dog with socks!
It is a constant reminder of what they did wrong…don’t know if Cesar Milan would approve but it works.
wow 18 is pretty old for a cat. Congrats on that.
Hi ladies,
The spraying collar did not work. Put it on her and everytime she barked it sprayed her and she shook her head and kept on barking. Then she would get some water to wash it down. My husband does not want to put a shock collar on her. He is afraid that if other dogs bark, it will shock her. We are still checking to see if that is the case. Took it in and got my money back, and the lady at Petsmart gave me the trainers number. I guess I will try that route.
Hi Vicki, I also have had shelties for more than 30 years. The bigger ones stayed outside. These are minis and cannot stay out all the time. I don’t want themm to stop barking, but they need to learn how to behave on the lead. They act all badass, and then when they get near the dog, go all timid. I guess I have spoiled them rotten like my kids say.
I have also tried the beep thing. Worked for an hour. I have also muzzeld her and she still barks. We take them with us everywhere. We have an RV when we travel, so the dogs can go with us. They are spoiled rotten. And their son, is worse than his parents. LOL
LOL, TC at the cat comment. Cats think they own the place, don’t they? I actually LOVE my cat now, but don’t tell him. He gets a big head when he thinks he has fans.
.
I guess I should be thankful my border collie doesn’t bark much. She does growl if you whisper the cat’s name. It gets her so mad. Not sure why.
.
I don’t think I have any pet-saving tips. We buy the best dry food available. We go to an expensive vet. We’ve left her at the most expensive kennel around and signed her up for all the extras there- it costs more than a week at girl scout camp for my daughter. She got extra snuggles and snacks, swim time, off the leash play time and to extra walks per day. She loved it there. I half-expected her to come home with a bunch of little badges to sew onto her collar!
.
Does anyone here dress their pets in little outfits? I don’t, but my daughter’s best friend’s family has a little dog that has a wardrobe to die for!
TCparra says: 3 Cats here. They let me live here. Oldest is 18 years, youngest is 9 months.
.
LOL. How do they get along? How did the oldest adjust to the baby?
.
We have four (long story). They can’t stand each other – even two of them who are actual sisters and used to cuddle together as kittens. 🙁 Well a couple of them tolerate each other, but that is it.
.
I can’t believe Ann likes her cat. I wasn’t sure about that! Just kidding!
Ann….I dress my bunnies in t-shirts and onsies when we go out. One t-shirt I put on my little boy, Sammy, says “My mommy is single”…..LOL LOL
Ann….I dress my bunnies in t-shirts and onsies when we go out. One t-shirt I put on my little boy, Sammy, says “My mommy is single”…..LOL LOL
.
ROFLMAO! I would LOVE to see that one! “My Mommy is single!” LOL
.
Shh, Anya! Do NOT let the little guy know. He gets all bossy and demanding when he thinks I am liking him. He’s a very noisy, demanding cat.
I have 2 cats. Both are rescue cats.Tigger is about 12 and haughty.Set in his way. He’s a coon cat. Then there is Goosie. About 4 and crazy as can be. After he uses the litter box, he races around the apartment like he’s being chased and then rolls some of my area rug up. He’s crazy but a big baby.
My cat rolls around after using the litter box, sm. He acts like he just won some great trophy or made a big kill? I think he has an inflated ego.
We have 2 male English Springer Spaniels.Pax and Jinx are 5 mos old and are fur balls of energy.Even though still pups they are excellent with the kids especially the 1yr olds.My Gram likes to bathe the boys in the laundry sink and the pups try their best to jump in with them, so Gram puts them in after the boys are out. These pups love water so we have to be vigilant at bath time.
SOR- The shock collar that I have is the Petsafe Remote Trainer, it has a remote that you use to beep them or shock them. The dog wears the collar. Which has an on/off switch. Sometimes I just have to put it on them and they behave! I have rarely needed to use the shock button, mostly just the beep. Which is the warning that if they don’t stop a shock will follow. I have been using just the beeping this week only and it’s amazing how quiet my house has been! I just place the collar near where they are at. If inside I’ll put it on a door knob and if outside I will put it on the table. So when they bark for no reason I beep it…it is very high pitched….I want the dogs to bark when necessary. If someone is at the door etc…
My dogs are 30lbs and are inside most of the time…actually they are at wherever I am at! they follow me around everywhere! Aren’t they the best?
I am trying to picture a bunny in a onesi
SOR, thinks for the info on the collar. I’m glad you could take it back. I think I will try it on mine in the future. He’s not too bright, but he’s sensitive. When he was younger and I would take his collar off to rub his neck, he would whine and paw at me until I put it back it on. I wish you luck. She sounds determined. The barking can be so aggravating (and ear piercing). I do like the fact that anyone that knocks on my door knows my doggies are intimidating, but the younger one is just too protective.
LOL at Ann’s cat celebrating his trips to the litter box. That’s funny.
Kmom2, the bunnies sound adorable.
Well, we had three that are 12, 17 & 18. The 17 year old orange tabby died a few months ago. It’s amazing how attached we get to our fur babies! Since then we got the 9 month old from a shelter and he bonded instantly with the older one. He now is the instigator and won’t stop messing with the older one. They sleep in the same “small” bed together and he grooms him (they groom each other). The third one, she is a Beotch! She doesn’t like anyone messing with her, except the humans. The baby doesn’t understand that and wants her to play so badly. There have been a couple occasions where she will let the baby groom her head or ears, but only for a few seconds then it’s like “get off me!”. Gotta love them!
Vicki, thanks for the info. I will check that out. Yes shelties are the best. They raised my kids and now my grandchildren.
TC, So sorry on the loss of your cat. Yes, losing them always leave a hole in our hearts and life.
Nice to hear that new one is doing well and has a close chum. You never really know what a cat’s personality is going to be like.
I have an old “Please admire me from afar” cat. She really sees no reason for anyone to touch her for any reason…..lol lol She is coming up on 15 yrs old and has lost quite a few teeth to the point she slobbers a lot. She hates the bunnies, but the bunnies love to chase her! And she has learned to never rest on the floor or withing jumping reach when the bunnies are out. They couldn’t keep away from her tail. It fascinated them!
I have a cat that got knocked up by a feral cat. Those kittens were the strangest cats I have ever seen. Would not use a litter box. Pooped on the fireplace wood. When it came time to get rid of them, they were gone in a day. When people found out they were feral kittens, they knew they would make good mousers. Got their mother fixed after that. Originally got her to keep my first baby sheltie company. She would ride in the middle console with the dog on trips. She has taught all the dogs how to groom themselves and even licks and cleans the sons face. Funniest thing you ever saw. A cat cleaning a dog.
Oh, I like this thread. No fighting
Well in an interesting turn of events, Radaronline has written a little article on Kate that simply plugs her column for couponcabin. I think they owed her that much for all the hits their Gosselin stories have brought them.
SOR says..Oh, I like this thread. No fighting
.
Yes! It’s great.
.
Marie, thanks, I’ll go check out Radar. Good of them to give Kate some publicity. She has made them some serious $$$ over the past few years!
So, Kate is going to be on Dr. Drew’s show sometime. There are some preview videos out there. I watched them and she said the kids were coming home happy from Jon’s and that’s all that mattered. The other previews were more of the same dating stuff. I am wondering about what’s to come on the actual show. I’ve never watched Rehab or Dr. Drew’s show. I’m not that impressed w/him on Teen Mom. But, I’m happy to see Kate still working in the media.
She was also in Runner’s World (a mag that holds absolutely no interest for me). She looked really fab. She’s still going and still making the news.
Have you guys decided to stop reporting as much on Kate. I noticed that there have been no up-dates for a couple of weeks. With Sage being gone now it seems the support blogs are pretty slim pickings now.
Sorry carol, I had fallen behind. I just posted a new article here: https://imperfectwomen.com/kate-gosselin-in-march-issue-of-runners-world/
You can talk about all Gosselin news under this thread. We have not stopped writing about her. When she is on Dr. Drew, we will be posting that also. I hesitate to post everything she says on Twitter, like Gather does. Such as she went to the dentist, LOL.
.
so radar online has it that jon and ellen broke up. they say she denied it but he put it on twitter that it was true. rumorfix has it too
I love reading all about the pets here. I miss my little Chihuahua “Hannah” so bad. she passed away last year. She was 17.
I heard the rumor also that Jon and Ellen have broke up. I wonder if we will see Jon out roaming again like before?
I have decided against trying out the citranella shooting collar. I am sure he will dribble and act abused. The other day, my daughter tried to put a little tutu on him and his reaction has been to cower down. He’s such a sensitive little guy. But, out of the blue, he has finally decided to recognize that when we’re outside, people have a right to walk by on the sidewalk. Someone walking by said “he minds good.” Lol, it only took three years.
Lily, my mom has a dog that “buffs” or growls anytime she sees someone out in their yard. It’s too funny to watch her act as though these people have no right to be outside! LOL LOL
