Kate Gosselin-In People This Week

By Pam@IW

TweetPinEmailPrintYummlyLinkedInLikeShareShare1

Update:  A video is posted below that was just released on Access Hollywood.

Kate Gosselin: I’m in the Best Shape of My Life

Kate Gosselin is featured on the cover of People this week wearing a white bikini and looking fit and fantastic! She talks about how she reached her new level of fitness with near daily runs, “I’ve worked really hard!” she tells PEOPLE in this week’s cover story. “Haven’t I earned the right, at this point, to look good?”

Kate also addresses the rumors about her body guard, Steve Neild. While the single mom shoots down incessant tabloid reports linking her to her bodyguard – “It’s just absurd,” Gosselin says – she does hope her new body will turn some heads. “I’m waiting for Mr. Right. It would be nice if somebody noticed me, sure!”

She apparently will address the rumors regarding plastic surgery and botox in this latest issue of People that will be on the newstands this Friday.

I’m sorry, but I just can’t defend Kate on this, especially the Mexico trip whereas she is in a little slip of a bikini w/Steve around and matching colored tops.  That does not look professional at all.  Her children are at a vulnerable age, especially the twins who I’m not sure would approve of “Mom” being on a national magazine cover in a barely there bikini.
Does she have a nice body, Yes, but for someone who disparages Jon on a talk show for not being a “there” father, then pulls the media blitz with the bikinis.  Who is getting the kids their daily meals, taking them to school, helping w/homework?

I say Kudos to Kate! She is in great shape and quite a few celebrities have graced the cover of People with their new slimmed down bodies in a bikini.  Melissa Joan Hart who is a mother of two very small children and recently lost weight  was on the cover of May of 2009. Valerie Bertenilli also was on the cover in a bikini a little over a year ago after she lost weight.

I also think that Kate is a “celebrity” and she will have to leave her children to do the media game from time to time just like actors and actresses will leave their family to shoot TV shows or movies. I don’t think that makes her any less of a mother.

I can’t really connect anything she said last week on Regis and Kelly with faulting her for this cover on People magazine or her recent business trip.   Just my opinion.

Good for Kate.  IMO, she has worked hard on her body and there is nothing wrong with showing it off.  I think the kids will be proud of her.

Kate is a working mother and sometimes has to be away from her children.  She is with her children more than mothers that work a 9 to five job.

With the way the naysayers love to hate on Kate I do not believe they wore the same colored top on purpose.  To me it proves they stay in separate rooms!

There are many women older than Kate in the entertainment business that show more than Kate does.  Why do people only seem to have a problem with Kate?

TO BMBMGoBlue: It amazes me how many people do what you do above, make something as amazing as motherhood sound like a life sentence without possibility of parole or even work release in a maximum security prison, complete with deliberately ugly wardrobe. I won’t rehash the whole what Kate did or didn’t say thing except to say that not only do I not think she bashed him, I think she’s been very generous when she talks about him.

At least part of the time, the kids were with their father.  During the week, they are all in school full time know. Kate’s work requires her to travel and, yes, maybe even have a little relaxation when she’s there. So what if the nanny/nannies look after them for a few days. If she was working as a nurse, depending on her hours, a day care provider or other helper might well have to be doing what you describe anyhow.  As for homework, it’s early in the year, at most we’re talking about a few nights, and the 6 are in their opening weeks of first grade. It’s not unheard of for mothers to take a little me time off.

I think Kate is a role model to young women to know that, if you have children, it doesn’t mean that you have to resign yourself to looking like a lump for the rest of your life in order to be a good mother. She also makes it very clear that there isn’t a quick or easy way to getting there. Even with the abdominoplasty, by having it shown on TV including the recovery period, she made it clear that this is major, very painful surgery with a lengthy recovery period. She also makes it clear that the rest is hard work and good eating habits.

I wasn’t fortunate enough to have children of my own, although I am a devoted aunt and great-aunt. As an observer, it has always baffled me why some mothers savage other mothers who have made different choices than the first group made.  It’s as if the fact that the second group made different choices is seen as some kind of attack on the first group which then believes it is defending itself. That’s true whether the attackers are SAHM, mothers who work part-time or mothers who work full time. Guess what?!?! IMHO, most mothers are doing the best that they can and are making the choices that, in their judgment, are the best for their families and themselves.  There isn’t and never will be a one-size-fits-all model for successful parenting in general and motherhood in particular. Isn’t being a mother demanding enough in today’s world without mothers making it tougher on each other?

Please don’t put me in the “Hate Kate” category.  If you have read my other posts I am Anti-TLC not Anti-Kate.  This was just my humble opinion on the Mexico pics and the People magazine.  I can take small doses of Kate but when TLC does this media blitz whereas she is over covered in the media, again, IMHO, it is too much.

I worked a 9-5 job but, I had dinner w/my family and put mykids to bed every night.  Again, IMO you can’t compare a single Mom working 9-5 to the media blitz 24-7.

I also think TLC exploits the reality families.  Their upcoming programming has 2 multiple families, a bigamist and his wives, etc.  I will watch the final episodes of the Roloffs but then I am through watching TLC.

I think that she looks great and she’s meant to be an INSPIRATION to Moms.  If she can do it, they can too.  You don’t have to neglect your appearance or dress like a nun after you have kids.  You can continue to be a vital attractive woman who looks good and is proud of her appearance, even though you are 35 and have 8 kids.

And every Mom is entitled to take a break, take a few days for herself if she can.  She’s not leaving them to fend for themselves, she’s not abandoning them.  I think she’s doing what every parent would do if they could.

Kate looks fantastic.  Good for her.

As for Kate’s time in Mexico, it was 4 days including time over a weekend Jon had the kids.  This cover shot was likely taken at least a month ago as it takes a while to put a magazine together.  I do not think that Kate is away from the kids excessively.  More importantly, I wondr why Kate is the only celebrity mother incessantly criticized from spending time away from her children while working.

I would think the twins think there Mom looks great and are proud of her.  People is constantly putting celebrities (including mothers with children) in bikinis on their cover and no one posts continually about it upsetting their children.  How much outrage and worry about their children was expressed when Valerie Bertanell and Melissa Joan Hart appeared on the cover of People in bikinis?

Why is Kate held to a different standard than other mothers?

It always galls me that Joan Rivers, herself a mother that spent her life traveling from comedy club to comedy club, is so fond of mocking Kate for being away.  Back in the day when AOL was the place to be the Mom Forums were home to vicious arguments between stay at home versus working moms.  How sad that we are still imposing our own life choices as the only answer.  I think it’s fine that she works.  I think that she is very lucky that it is occasional travel, that it pays well and that Jon is now maintaining a custody arrangement that allows her to plan her away time.

Goblue, while I see your concerns, there are many abused children in the world today, and Kate is providing a home for her children. While she is involved in a TV job, why is this any different than any other working Mom. I worked 3 jobs at one time, and I can tell you my kids saw very little of me, and they have grown up to be respectful and responsible adults. You don’t have to be home 24/7 to see that your childs every need is met, they can figure things out on their own also. Kate is planning her future and her kids educations, and I applaud her for doing this. Do you have any idea what it costs to raise a child today and for them to have a continued eduacation after HS. Go look up the stats on this.

I wish instead of people always putting Kate down, they would look at her situation and be a little kinder. Yes, she chose to have her family and she is choosing how to make a living. It’s not hard to understand her wanting to do the best job she can to provide. If you had someone following your every move goblue, how do you think you would handle your family and job? She is doing her job, and while Kate and the 8 may be over, this leaves the big qustion in my mind, will Jon step up and get a real job and help his children. It does take more than love to raise kids. There are bills to pay, school, medical, food, insurance, utlities, clothes, and and a stable home which I feel Kate is providing. Children need some guidence, not being told it’s ok to sit on a couch all day playing games and twitter all day.
Being a responsible adult is showing your children that you love them.

I would love to be on vacation from the world today, but not jealous of Kate having a break at all. Keep smiling, look ahead, and have a nice day everyone.

Whoa, Kate looks fantastic.  I never have a prob w/skin.  I have more of a problem w/tacky clothes.   IMO, there’s no reason for a woman to hide her body unless it’s something she chooses to do.

Marie S, it doesn’t gall me that Joann Rivers makes fun of Kate, I have mixed feelings about her stand-up, but that’s what she does.  It does gall me that people take it seriously.    Anyone remember how much of her routine used to center around Elizabeth Taylor and her weight gain?  Joann’s humor is to insult people.  I doubt she even knows that much about Kate,  she just has a couple of lines to pull out for her name.

  13. PeggyP says

    September 15, 2010 at 9:27 am

Lily@IW— The same thing bugs me about Joan Rivers. Aside from the fact that she included her family in her standup act all othe time throughout her career, then she and her daughter turned their family relationship into a business commodity to the point of, when a TV movie was made of the devastating impact that her husband’s suicide had on her and their daughter and how they rebuilt their lives, she and Melissa played themselves.

  14. Lily@IW says

    September 15, 2010 at 9:58 am

PeggyP, I didn’t know there was a bio movie about Joann.   Joann does insults on everyone.  btw, “gall” was too strong of a word for how I feel about people taking it seriously.   It’s just another strange and funny thing that the screamers reach for.

I too think that she looks great and has no reason not to take pride in her level of fitness  especially given the hard work it takes.  As a role model for her daughters, I guess I just don’t grasp why the photo has to be in a bathing suit.  Many of us with daughters are trying to promote them having bodies and healthy body images.  Again, it may be a case of Kate being held to a higher standard because we know so much about her children — probably more than the public knows about any other celebrity children these days. As a result, we feel invested in her family.  Just thinking/typing out loud.  However, I totally agree that tlc continues to exploit this family and hope that very soon Kate recognizes this and pursues a career independent of the children.

I  do not care what excuse someone gives for saying Kate should not be in a bathing suit? There is no excuse to say that.
WHY cant Kate be in a bathing suit??
IMO anyone complaining about Kate being in her bathing suit is JEALOUS ~ and anyone that disagrees with MO is because they don’t want to admit it.

  20. whatabouthekids says

    September 15, 2010 at 10:33 am

Just so you know, the excuse that I have for questioning why the picture had to be with her bathing suit is because it is my opinion and all opinions deserve respect.  There are lots of men and women who understand that women have been objectified for years and years by being defined by their bodies.  There is alot more to her than her body and I think it would have been alot better choice, for instance, for her to be in her workout gear.  That would have reflected the strong woman that this blog says she is.

  21. whatabouthekids says

    September 15, 2010 at 10:36 am

I also find it condescending to say that my opinion reflects my jealousy of Kate’s body and I did not complain.  I just questioned it which the last time I checked I should be able to do.

You are absolutely right. I think it is important always to understand that not everyone is a “hater” and not everyone is here to bait. Not everyone is jealous.  Some people come to IW to express their opinion because we have always welcomed all opinions with respect.

I would really like people to discuss the opinion or the issue without name calling.  I know that is not going to make me popular but I can take the heat.

Kiki says…The really funny thing about Joan Rivers complaining about Kate is that she is getting her own reality show on WE, featuring  her daughter Melissa and ten year old grandson.  Maybe she just doesn’t want the competition.

    Well, isn’t that interesting.

I don’t find Joan Rivers funny at all. I have a small amount of respect for her in that she was a trailblazer for female comedians. She has been through a lot and appears to be a strong lady. I can appreciate that.

But, she has always been obsessed with women’s weight. Always. Who can forget her Karen Carpenter “jokes.” Yuck.

I like Kathy Griffin. Yes, she can be “mean”, but there is some humanity underneath her humor IMO. I personally loved the Kate skit she did on Jimmy Kimmel. Kate laughed at it too and I believe Kathy tweeted that she and Kate had lunch together shortly thereafter?

  32. Anya@IW says

    September 15, 2010 at 12:29 pm

Mom of KT – no need to be jealous, remember she has half of your genes! 🙂

It hasn’t been the focus of conversation yet, but I think Kate’s face looks simply beautiful in this picture. I love the hair and particularly the lighter make-up. She is a natural beauty.

I can totally appreciate those who have different thoughts on bathing suits or the need to send positive and realistic images to our young women regarding women’s bodies. I respect those different points of view. It really has NOTHING  to do with Kate specifically (in the case of the posters above, I’m not saying it is the same case on other boards). People just have different opinions on these issues and that is a good thing. Makes things more interesting, I think.

Personally, I am fine with the bikini. I know there may be have some airbrushing of stretch marks, but the photo does not look excessively photoshopped to me. Kate looks fit, toned and in shape, but not excessively skinny. She has a women’s thighs – not those of 13 year old girl.

    Go Kate!

I’m looking forward to the People article too.  So far, I’ve purchased a couple of People mags just because of Kate.

  36. Jennie@IW says

I could probably write a (not very coherent) book on my thoughts about women’s clothing choices, exploitation, autonomy, etc. This has actually been on my mind the past couple of days, due to the Ines Sainz kerfuffle.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Kate being on the magazine cover in a bikini. I’m also not going to judge her for the bikini shots in Mexico – she was apparently working and she has the right to some R&R and it’s not like she posed for the photos. (Not to say that it would necessarily be wrong if she had, but in this case it appeared she was taking a break from whatever work related thing she was doing , which is her right.)

I guess my feelings about the chance of Mady and Cara being embarrassed by a photo of their mom on a national mag in a bikini are like this: Kate is not doing anything wrong. If she were, then I would agree that, as a mother, one of the factors in the wrongdoing is some consideration of how it effects her children. I do understand that media attention about Kate has had and probably will continue to have an effect on the Gosselin children. I think that’s just part of the whole shebang, and my oft-stated feeling on the whole shebang is that it’s their lives and these are the choices the Gosselins made and I think that’s their right. My hope would be that Kate and Jon are able to build up the kids’ self-confidence so that they are not so concerned about what strangers think of their family. Children almost all go through a period of being embarrassed by their parents and while I realize the circumstances are different when you’re famous, I still don’t think it’s a parents’ responsibility to avoid behaviors (that aren’t otherwise wrong) for fear of embarrassing the kids).

I do see the point whataboutthekids is making about body image. That’s such a big issue and while I’m not trying to take away Kate’s responsibility for her own choices, I also don’t want to put too much culpability on her for something that is so pervasive in society.

Can I just say how much I appreciate temperate responses? Even when we disagree, we don’t have to take personal offense at opposing opinions, or overstate those opinions for the sake of argument.

What makes Kate any different than any other woman, and many of you have named a few that have also wore a bikini to show off their body.  Kate looks fab!!  Each time I see a picture of her (clothes or bikini) I think dang it….  I need to take up running!  So she had bit of work done, yes, I’m even not sure bout the upper body at this point,  but who cares….  it’s her body and she looks great.
I think some might have a problem with her not being “mom to 8” only these days.  She’s found a place for herself in the entertainment world.   Jon could have also as well as anyone who starts in reality TV or the like.  If there is a demand and you fit the demand, then you either go with it or reject it.  Kate’s reason to go with it are her choices, supporting your family – that’s the biggest one.  I have to say if someone paid me to work like she does (not that it’s all easy), I’d jump on it!!

Surely this a super photo, & it’s simply grand that Kate 1st wanted to do it, & 2nd of all, People asked her to pose for it…or vice versa.  As for the ‘appropriate image of any mom 35 yr. old mom…to die for, I say!  Those horrid over-the-fence-paps have already caught poor Kate fleeing in a bikini from her own backyard pool.    Maybe now those prudes who snark will stop dead in their tracks.  (For those who haven’t been across the pond…Kate would be deemed Twiggy!)

Anyway, I don’t buy People…but of all the celebrity rags, they seem to try the hardest to keep content & photos on the up & up.  About time Kate had a good dose of positive press!!!!

Haven’t followed much in a long time so don’t know what the Mexico references are. Just looking at the mag. cover, my comment was more along the lines of “why are you courting media coverage and paparrazi (sp?) when you complain about it all the time?” Yes, she might be in entertainment but many celebs don’t do that ‘type’ of media coverage. Answer the questions you want and all that, but parade around on a cover makes it more of a “look at me!!! I don’t mind people intruding in my life.

And I know this cements me in the “catty” category, but ever since the imfamous weave, I’ve been surprised people like the look. Not against it actually, but I always wonder where the real is and where the fake hair begins. It doesn’t look natural to me. Like when Britney shaved her head, almost would like the “here it is now, up close, for real,” and then grow out naturally like we all do! Sorry. Not a Kate hater, actually respect her. But she is in entertainment now and I am naturally just commenting on that.

I think Kate looks wonderful.  I am not jealous.  She has worked hard for that body.   I guess the kids see her like that  all the time.  Personally, I think it would be a good idea to scale it back a bit.  With society putting so much emphasis on body image, it would be hard to raise 5 daughters.  She is setting a good example for her kids to eat right and exercise.  I remember when she took the kids to the hospital where they were born.  There was a picture of Kate from that time, and she said something about looking ugly.  I thought she was beautiful then and beautiful now.  I think you have to be careful the message you give, especially to girls.  I certainly think she is doing the best she can.  The only thing about her being gone so much that makes her different from the average celebrity mom is that she has so many kids.  It would be hard to give each child individual attention if she were there every day.  That makes me more sad for her.  No amount of money will get this time back.  But I understand her need to provide for them.  I wish her well in her journey to find balance.

I disagree, Cincymom!  I think that Kate has every right to complain about the paparazzi and every right to appear on magazine covers.  The two are not incompatible.  She gets to decide what coverage she wants.  She decides what’s “worth it” to her.  Who would want paparazzi making money off pictures of you pumping gas?  I wouldn’t want that.  That’s an annoyance and there’s no benefit to her.  Pay me a few thousands dollars to pose for a magazine cover (not in a bathing suit!) and I’m there.

Yeah, I agree with Ann – there is a difference between doing publicity (which she may be doing for professional reasons rather than because she wants attention) and tolerating the intrusion of paparazzi into your life. Besides, I don’t think I’ve seen Kate complain so much about the attention – she complains some, she’s philosophical some, and sometimes she just comments on how it makes certain things difficult.

I don’t think everyone who has an issue with the People cover is jealous – some people here have brought up issues that, while I don’t agree with them, seem legitimate to me.

  53. CincyMom says

    September 15, 2010 at 4:58 pm

    Ann,
I agree she has all rights. My only thing is that if you put yourself out there, you can’t expect not to have others invade your privacy. Yes, common sense is “I didn’t ask for you here, leave me and my kids at the bus alone.” But………………..put yourself on a cover and then chastise people for invade your privacy, just acknowledge that you are putting yourself in the public eye and simply accept what that entails (tabloids, judgement, etc…..).

If someone paid you money to pose, would you not expect comments and people making judgements? I do think paps would take weird photos at inopportune times but to expect to decide the coverage….mmmm not a reality if you ask me. You don’t say “it’s an annoyance and doesn’t benefit me,” you kind of have to agree to the whole you take the good with the bad. And if she decides it is worth it to her,  heck I wouldn’t actually judge that part.

Anyone else agree? I’m curious if I’m alone on that. (look, I’m putting myself out there ; )

  54. CincyMom says

    September 15, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Oh and looking back at the cover, look how they highlight “my new body” in a different color. Then go on to probably say nothing is new or paid for, just hard work, not even the “new body” they are saying.  It is a media machine and if you put yourself in it, I just don’t think you have a right to say how it is perceived. There are a zillion opinions in the world so of course people will have a comment.

I don’t see any issue with the hair extensions.  It’s a great way to change one’s style without having to wait for it to grow.  It’s also a great way to get through those hard to manage stages of growing hair out.  I don’t see why she should have to grow it out as well all do, if she has the money to do otherswise.  Wondering where the real hair begins is the purpose of the extensions.  That isn’t supposed to be noticable and the fact that you said you wonder where the real and fake began, just shows they are doing what they are supposed to. Personaly, I see no difference in this than any of the other enhancements women use, including high heels.  High heels make one look taller than they are.

Hi Cincymom, I think Kate looks similar to what she did before she had the sextuplets.  I remember being surprised the first time I saw some pics and video around the time of her wedding and then on her honeymoon.  She looked so different than the mom I was watching on tv.  She has such a softer look w/longer hair.   I think it really flatters her face.

CincyMom, nice to see you. Keep putting yourself out there. 🙂 Seriously, we don’t always agree, but I know you come from a fair-minded place.

Like many celebrities, I think Kate is in a difficult, sometimes no-win situation. She has to do a certain amount of publicity (with the right publications) to maintain interest in her projects. Along with that comes the less desirable elements, such as the paparazzi.

I think the other thing to keep in mind is Kate speaks her mind. You usually know what Kate is thinking or feeling at a given moment when other folks in the spotlight perhaps hide their true feelings better. She fully admits to this. I think it is one of the qualities that makes her relatable actually.

Kate may occasionally complain more than some would like, but my sense from some of her other comments is that stardom came very quickly and at first she really didn’t understand it or know how to handle it. I think she is doing much better in this area.

And, yes, many of us are very excited about the Stephanie Plum movie! I know we will be talking more about that on IW. Another Ranger fan – eh? I guess I can have Morelli for myself. 🙂

I’m sure that Kate’s cover has been airbrushed, because let’s face it, they all are.  Did any one see what they did to Faith Hill a couple of years ago?   http://www.celebitchy.com/4788/faith_hill_loses_20_years/  IMHO, I think she looked fine as she is.

As for Kate appearing in a bikini, I understand what others have said about body image (and agree to some extent) but weight loss and bathing suits are so intertwined that it’s not shocking.  I haven’t read the article (and probably won’t) but hopefully she tells all about what surgical help she had too look good.  One of my pet peeves (one of many lol) are the people to try to say they’ve done it all naturally and set unrealistic expectations for women.  And as a member of the no ankle club, the first thing I’ve noticed is that Kate has similiar legs as mine which isn’t something you see too often in the media.

Before I became a SAHM, I did entertainment for corporate events and actually worked with Joan Rivers.  I’m sarcastic, and enjoy that type of humor, so her comedy doesn’t bother me.  I have to say she was wonderful to work with.  (She even gave me a bee pin from her QVC collection because it’s the symbol of good luck!)  Which, I admit is a little cheesy but I loved it.  She was one of my favorite acts to work with.  Her daughter Melissa, on the other, is supposed to be a brat.  My boss, who started as a back up singer to Bob Hope on the USO tours, then performed in Vegas, would always get phone calls from Joan because she was looking for a play date with her daughter and her daughter never wanted to go.  (And let me tell you, my boss’s daughter wasn’t a prize herself.)

I can’t wait for Top Chef myself!  Who do you think will win?  I’m thinking Ed and hoping it’s not Antonio.

That’s wrong on two levels. In the first place, the First Amendment applies only to governmental action. In the second place, the action that it forbids is governmental action (including prior restraint) that infringes on freedom of speech and the press (as well as peaceable assembly, religious free expression, the absence of establishment of religion, and the right to petition for the redress of grievances).  The answer to speech that one believes is bad is speech: the free marketplace of ideas.

How many celebs exactly have you seen who don’t do publicity? How many female celebrities have you seen who haven’t done cover shoots or never posed in sexy outfits? What kinds of publicity would you feel do not imply an open invitation to the tabloids and the paparazzi to run the celebrity down like a pack of rabid dogs?  I’ve seen Britney Spears trashed for nearly dropping one of her babies with little or not responsibility being given to the hord of paparazzi that was physically jostling her and making it impossible for her to see where the curb was before the stepdown to the street?  Should someone be able to sunbathe in their own fenced-in back yard without worrying that somehow a pap will climb a tree next door and get a photo with a telephoto lens? Should the price of being successful in the entertainment industry be becoming a prisoner in your own home with the curtains drawn and the blinds down?

Doing publicity is part of one’s job in the entertainment industry. There are a few people who are such big stars that they don’t have to , but that’s at the very top.  I don’t believe that means that the person has surrendered all rights to expect any privacy or any time off from their job.  There are quite a few public occasions where celebrities can be seen and photographed.  I don’t think it’s unreasonable for someone, just because they are well-known, to not be able to walk down the street or to go to a restaurant.

I can agree with you and I would call that debate. Debate is different than calling someone ignorant ( on another thread) or using a standard line that everyone is just jealous.

I think we both know that we are talking about doing so with showing a little respect. I also think that everyone here has had ample space to state their opinion.  No comments have been deleted. And on another thread I deleted a sentence where someone called two other posters ignorant.

I find it strange that  I did not see anyone complaining  when I deleted comments by non fans who made negative remarks about Kate .  In fact, I was applauded for it.  We have not even deleted anyone’s comments here. We are just asking people to be considerate of others.  Can you explain to me how that is wrong?

I am also short, so can relate to Kates mom’s.  When I married my husband they called us Mutt and Jeff. I can walk under his arm, so I always say, maybe they think I’m your daughter. LOL

This has to be the best blog on the the net, strong women who can look at both sides. I also have been very out spoken on Kates behalf, but do appreciate other points of view. Hats off to the posters here!!

That’s right, Jennie!  We are polar opposite on our political views, but I enjoy your debates so much.  You listen to what the other person is saying, give validation to a point they might have, then politely tell them why they are wrong.   🙂    I love it!

Theresa – I disagree about brushing away the fat – was the link working that I posted?  (I tried it from here and it wasn’t, even though I’m on the website right now and the address is the same?)  Faith Hill was in a too tight dress and had some back fat and they made it disappear.  I’m not too far into my PS class, but there is a liquefy (sp?) button that is suppose to get rid of fat lol.

And knew Joan is a relative term  – I worked with her on 1 show about 12 years ago.  She was old and frail then, but like you said, she sure likes to work.-Sue

Sue, no, the link was not working. I was agreeing with your original post, specfically this sentence…

I’m sure that Kate’s cover has been airbrushed, because let’s face it, they all are.

Personally (and without actually seeing the Faith pic, just going by what you said) I think Faith’s backfat should not have been airbrushed out.  That’s her…it should be there.   But, now I see what you mean about airbrushing fat.  (I had to re-read your post and mine).  I guess I should’ve said, “I do believe they did not airbrush Kate’s fat, because I believe she doesn’t have any.  Other imperfectons may have been erased, but I do believe she’s earned the 6 pack the hard way….and we do still see scars of the original tummy tuck.”

Wish the link of Faithwas working. Was this the same magazine that airbrushed her face to make her look younger?  Remember that a few years back?

My opinion only:  I saw the People cover and I saw the photos on Radar Online of Kate in Mexico.  Kate looks completely different in the People cover than she does in the Cabo pics!  And I agree with the poster who said they hope Kate talks about the advantages she’s had to look as good as she does.  (She didn’t look all that great in Mexico).  I really, really hope she confesses to ALL the procedures she’s had, not just the filmed tummy tuck.  It will all come out eventually.  It’s better for her to just tell the truth.

I really don’t understand why anyone would want to be perfected like that. It’s not like the real photos aren’t out there for everyone to see. It’s almost insulting the publics intelligence. The cover was clearly airbrushed. Kate looks great for real. She has worked very hard to get this way. Why cover up the few imperfections she has?

  104. Paige says

I thought Kate looked fantastic in Cabo pictures and very similar to what is on the cover of People.  I do think that stretch marks were airbrushed but it certainly doesn’t matter to me.  I am not going to hold Kate to a higher standard of non-airbrushing than any other celebrity is held to.
Why does Kate need to talk about the advantages she has had to get that way?  We don’t expect any other celebrity to talk about how they can stay in shape more easily than other’s because they have more money.  Also, why does Kate need to “confess” to anything regarding any procedures she may or may not have had?  She has done nothing illegal, wrong, or unique  if she had any cosmetic procedures. Why do people think it is their right to know this?  Again, why is Kate held to a standard others are not?

  105. Pam@IW says

I looked at Sue’s link above. I have read before that most covers are air brushed. Even Playboy where the models really don’t have many flaws.

They also do this with Senior Class pictures, wedding pictures and so on.  Is it right?  Probably not. I know that has a society it would be much better if everyone would just be natural and then everyone would not be so hung up on their bodies and be more inclined to show their imperfections.

Jamie Lee Curtis did something on this back in 2002 and you can find it here. She allowed them to take before and after pictures for the article.

I wish I could have one of those “airbrushes” in real life.  Although I am ok with some of my imperfections I can’t say there are not some I would like to get rid of.  😉

Kate had no stretch marks–they were taken away with the Tummy Tuck.  My daughter Would Not pose in a bikini on a mag cover unless her body was , in her opinion, in the best shape possible.  That’s just Kate.  They might have airbrushed small imperfections, but the rest was all due to VERY hard work!  That is the way she is.  And no, she has NO fat!  I am hoping she doesn’t get any thinner.

They have the inevitable plastic surgeons weighing in on Kate on ROL.  They obviously didn’t do their homework.  One of them says  “Women who have had that many kids usually have a lot of stretching of excess skin in both the tummy and the breasts.”  She only had two pregnancies for all those kids, and  AFAIK, the breasts don’t get any bigger when you’re carrying 2 or 6 babies than they do for one.

The other doctor says  “There is a very high correlation of skin laxity in the breast and stomach area and it is very rare for someone to get a tummy tuck and not get a breast augmentation.”
I guess he doesn’t know that her doctor, who actually saw “the goods”  said she just needed a better bra.

Theresa – I don’t think she had much say about it.  I know she has some sort of relationship with Redbook magazine because they have featured her and Tim several times but I have to say Redbook is one of the worse magazines when it comes to PS pictures.  They were caught totally recreating a picture of Jennifer Anstin (sp?) to make it appear that she posed for the mag, when in reality they took her arm from one photo, her head from another, etc. and put it together to make it appear new.

Pam, I participate on several photography boards, and how much (and what) you edit comes up a lot.  Generally, it comes down what the client wants, but most just tone down things like acne, little skin and eye brightening and making colors pop, so it still looks like the person only a little better.  However, you do get those people who want you to remove things like birthmarks, or want really smooth (almost plastic) skin.  Ugh.

I think woman feeling confident with their bodies is an expeptional role model for young girls.
If Kate was not promoting healthy eating and appropriate exercise or saying she had to lose another 30 pounds….i’d be concerned.

Why is Kate held to a different standard…that is a very, very interesting question.

I don’t know why anyone thinks Kate would lie about not having plastic surgery.  This IS a woman who had abdominoplasty on national television, including being filmed discussing with her surgeon whether or not she needed breast work done as well.  BTW, I don’t consider the abdominoplasty to be cosmetic surgery in the sense of one done purely for aesthetic purposes.  From what the surgeon said, in addition to tightening the skin and removing excess, he repaired major muscle tearing and hernias. Let us face it; the female body is not designed to house that many fetuses at one time.  Pregnancy and delivery can be tough even in singleton pregnancies. I’ve known more that a few women who’ve had to have reconstructive work done to repair bowel or bladder damage  or to remove adhesions. Also, while people have tended to get a bit blase about it, a caesarean section is still major abdominal surgery.  To be blunt, in the first special, Kate said that when she came home from the hospital after delivering the six, she had a catheter, bowel incontinence issues, and an abdominal wound that she had to pack open herself (when my mother had cancer surgery involving removal of an abdominal tumor, her surgical wound was packed open rather than sewn up; as it was explained to me, this is to ensure healing of the entire incision from the base to the skin and to avoid infection).

Personally, the only differences I saw between the Cabo photos and the People cover shot are the differences one will always see between a candid outdoor snapshot that involves no posing and a studio shot. In this case, the difference will be particularly marked because in the Cabo bikini shots, she’s clearly not made up, she just has her hair pulled back off her face any which way as most women do by water on a vacation, and she’s photographed in very harsh sunlight. In the People photos, she’s had her hair and makeup done by first class professionals (I hope she never lets the person who did her hair and makeup for the DTWS “Paparazzi” number near her ever again; that person was totally incompetent.) and she’s posed and the lighting is done by professionals.  She looks relaxed and happy in the People shots so it was clearly a good atmosphere.

There isn’t a hair, clothes, or makeup stylist in the world who could make me look as good as she does even in the Cabo candids, but I think even I’d look a whole lot better if I was photographed by the team People used, even without any photoshopping or airbrushing.  Personally, I have some major surgical scars front and back (I tend to form keloid scars), so, in the unlikely event I ever get my body back to the point where I’d be willing to wear a bikini, much less be photographed in one, I’d hope someone would erase the scars. I’m not ashamed of them but I’m not so attached to them that I’d want to preserve them for posterity.

Dear MOKT-As the song goes, you have a lovely daughter.  It took me a while to get used to her new hairdo,  since it was such a radical change, but I now like her hair longer. It gives her a softer look.  I also think she’s very gutsy. Having a marriage end is never easy and an ugly divorce is bad enough even if only friends and family are observing.  Being subjected to the concerted and unrelenting character assassination that she has would leave most people, female OR male, locked in a dark room in a fetal position, sucking her/his thumb.  Instead, she has not only survived and thrived and I think the children being so clearly warm, well-behaved, and natural are proof of the great job she’s done under horrific circumstances.  You have every right to be as proud of her as you clearly are.  She gives new meaning to the phrase, living well is the best revenge.

My opinion on what is real:
Teeth – If these are caps/veneers she has had them a long, long time.  I envied her teeth back when she and Jon had them whitened together years ago.
Hair – This is looking less and less like extensions over the last few months.  During the kite flying I couldn’t see any extensions.
Breasts – I do not see the implant line that my girlfriends have.  They change location based on the swimsuit and top she has on.  So if there was work done it was very good and very minimal.  I personally don’t think there is work done.
The rest?  Same nose, same eyes, meh not much different.
The People photo is great.  Studio lighting, body make up all help.  But you could work on me for two days for the picture and a month in photoshop and I wouldn’t look that good.

Actually, we were offered this option (have to pay extra) for all of my daughter’s annual school pictures for the last several years. I think it began in middle school? (She just graduated high school). It is only minor retouching, but they remove acne, and other small imperfections. It doesn’t sit entirely right with me either, but I guess I am a hypocrite because I paid the extra $10/15 bucks to have the photographer do this.

I never thought a bout it like that, but I think you all are right–she’s been candid about a lot of things many people wouldn’t it would make no sense to lie now.  About the teeth–Jon has caps, and in the teeth whitening episode Kate said (I think) that she had braces when Jon’s dad was still alive, after they got married.  The hair doesn’t bother me, I live in a high minority area and half the women I come across on a given day have a weave.

Yes, radar is all in a frenzy over the “Kate smokes” film, and so is Admin’s site.  They say Kate is lying by omission by talking about her healthy lifestyle while she is clearly a smoker.  I ventured over, but to be honest I can barely go there any more because those people are getting to be unbearable, no longer funny just plain scary.

I agree! It’s like that on both sides though everywhere including blogs, Huffungton Post, CNN, People, etc. I am sort of an internet junkie and I have never seen anyhting like this for so long of a period. People are so passionate in their feelings on both sides. There are so many blogs dedicated just to the Gosselins. There are real life people fighting and doing nasty real life things to each other. Not to name any names but there are people just dowright obssessed with Kate and Jon. Lordy Bee! 😉 It’s like a soap opera with everyone waiting to find out what happens next. If the divorce and other craziness hadn’t happened I’m not so sure the Gosselins would have held our interest this long. I’m not so sure either Jon or Kate would still be in the limelight. It’s true what they say about people loving trainwrecks. No wonder People is still putting Kate on their cover and Jon still gets the attention he does. They would be crazy business wise not to. “Why is Kate held to a different standard…”

Because, unlike other celebrities, Kate is a mother first as in she didn’t become famous from acting. Her critics are unable to comprehend or combine their definition of “good mother” with Kate’s job as a celebrity. At least, that is my understanding of it.

It’s funny that the haters were so supportive of Pamela Anderson during DWTS and she is a mother who has been on many magazine covers wearing less than a bikini not touting the benefits of good diet and exercise but just being sexy. Did anyone talk about how that makes her boys look at women as objects? Don’t think so.

I have wondered if Pamela Anderson’s boys might be embarrassed by their friends seeing their mother nearly nude.  I don’t think Kate is the only one subject to criticism.  I was watching a show the Fashion Police, and they were critical of Demi Moore posting a picture of herself in a bikini on Twitter.  Their opinion was…we know–you are over 40 and have a hot body–we get it.  I think Kate does receive a lot of harsh criticism, but if you read comments about other celebs on the internet, you see a lot of meanness directed at them, too.

What is the great big deal if Kate has cigarette every once in a while?  It’s not a smart thing to do, and I’m unsure what I see in the video, but why does it matter?  People want to pick this poor woman to pieces and it’s ridiculous.  What other pseudo-celebrity is placed under such a harsh microscope?  With the media scrutiny, this woman can’t even have a glass of wine because she will be photographed and called an alcoholic.  Ridiculous.

People magazine DID do a lot of work on her body.  The cover is the most obvious and extreme.  Her missing belly button in the pink bikini was strange, but I’m glad they removed the tattoos in every shot.  Yes, they altered her body, somewhat.  But it’s a magazine that always does this.  They were not treating Kate any differently than every other celebrity that appears in the magazine.

This woman IS a celebrity, and it’s time to accept that she is not going away.  I hope she stays strong and finds a way to support the children without the show.

Garnet- What’s sad about the whole faux-smoking controversy is that there are people who are so absolutely obsessed with finding something to beat Kate up with that they are driven to embroider the facts overwhelmingly or just plain make things  in order to do it.  I’ve had enough critical things to say about jibberjabbers in the past and probably will  in the future, but she did a very thorough job in showing what actually happened here.

Could it all just be trouble by design?  The “THEY” have made every accusation possible and us beautiful, smart, intelligent, witty “WE” people  have run ourselves in circles defending her.
I always loved the show and only got involved so Kate would know that people would defend her.
Because I can see that Kate is  smart and strong enough to  live  her life the way she sees fit, I may just kick back and go back to enjoying the show now that its back on and let all this nonsense run its course without me.

It doesn’t really matter that Kate has had work  (yes, in my opinion, she’s even had veneers. It’s obvious because her teeth are different than they were when they first started the show).   I just think it would be in Kate’s best interest to be honest about it.   Every where I look Kate is being called a liar (R&K interview?) and I think that’s most people’s biggest problem with her.

The pink bikini shot of her in People was SO photoshopped.  I can’t even say airbrushed!  It looks nothing like her body!

And I’m also sorry to say this . . . but I don’t believe Kate’s mom is really posting here.  I don’t think Kate’s mom would lie for her about the teeth or anything else.  Sorry.  I’m sure I’ll be told to LEAVE.

*Yes,  its turned into a sick little game that I’m walking away from.  It was  the horror of discovering people that wanted to in my opinion ruin the Gosselins that got me to log onto blogs I’d never heard of before.  All the  reasoning in the world ,  absolutely witty come backs : )  &  humor plus  down right bashing back hasn’t changed a thing because the other side never was truly looking for a debate.
Now that its come down to critics making BOOBS out of them selves blowing up pictures of Kates chest and rewinding and rewinding to watch to see if shes exhaling smoke its obvious that sadly this cult that lives to harm her reputation will never stop.

I will agree with Pam and say that you are hardly the first person to question whether this is truly Kate’s mom. We have been around that block numerous times.

As Pam said, it is certainly your right not to believe it is her. I do find it interesting that you are an old-timer (me too!), so I would think you would be familiar with the Penn Mommy fraud that we uncovered. You are right about that, LB–I will NOT lie for my daughter.  You can believe it or not, I don’t care.  Most of my children have those big beautiful teeth.  They got them from me (one of my FEW great features)  Our dentists through the years always commented on our very GOOD teeth.  By the way, I still have them! (In several blogs it says I don’t have teeth!!)  No veneers are needed.  Kate had a couple crooked teeth(thanks to my husband), had them fixed by Jon’s dad, and that’s the extent of the work.

Oh my this is one of the most responded topics I have seen on this site.  O.K. I am so glad the “so called” Kate smoking controversy has ended…, she wasn’t smoking, now it is her teeth?  If she has had work on her teeth so what?  We saw the episode when her and Jon bleached their teeth.   Also now the debate is photoshopping.  O.K. so it isn’t Kate’s real “body”… it is a magazine and only a magazine article, it is not like it is Newsweek.  I got the ball rolling that I didn’t favor the bikini shots, and I still don’t.  IMO it is much ado about nothing.

Was Kate photoshopped, yes, are Kate’s teeth whiter than snow and perfect, yes, was Kate blowing smoke, no…   Again, too much media blitz for me.  As I said earlier, I can only take doses of her.

  163. Anya@IW says

    September 17, 2010 at 11:52 am

BMBMGoBlue – I don’t think anyone is arguing that no photoshopping was done. We are talking about degrees.

At the end of the day, my position remains the same — Kate is a very pretty woman and 95% of the beauty that comes through in these photographs is due to what God gave her! I base this on watching J&K back in the day. She was pretty then with short brownish hair and minimal make-up.

Since we are on the topic of magazine retouching, some of you might be interested in the controversy regarding the supposed lightening of Gabourey Sidibes skin for Elle magazine’s October cover.

I have said this so many times I don’t know why I keep saying but I will say it again. Churches pay for motivational speakers. It happens all the time.  A free speaker at a church in this day and age is a rare bird. Sometimes the speaker will charge a flat fee and sometimes it is a “love offering” where the speaker will accept as payment what ever people will offer.   This has been one of the long standing aruments that Kate was somehow trying to “scam” church people and was the base for much Kate hate.  First of all I don’t think the Christians need a some mean spirited people on the net using them as an excuse to trash Kate. Christians have Jesus on their side, enuff said. 🙂 Another reason I really dislike the “love offering” battle cry is it somehow makes the Christians sound like some poor losers who are easily scammed and need crazy bloggers to show them the light.

Some people would have NO TROUBLE believing Kate’s mom posted here if she didn’t support Kate.  I think it’s her message which angers or annoys some. (I said some.  I know some just can’t believe it after the Kreiders have been mostly silent, and I recognize that.)

I’m not a churchgoer but even I knew about the love offering concept.
I have never seen an account (and if there has been one I’m sure it would be quoted often)from someone who saw Kate/Jon speak at a church and felt that they had been lied to or duped in any way. I’ve seen lots of people accuse them of taking money from poor, naive grannies, but apparently none of those grannies has ever come out and said “I was robbed”.

  171. PeggyP says

    September 17, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Pattypie & Kiki-Excellent points. The critics don’t seem to distinguish between charity and a reasonable speaker’s fee, the latter of which is clearly what the Gosselins got.  Going somewhere to speak involves time, and, unless the destination is very close, travel expenses, hotel room, etc. for the speaker.  To some extent, by going the “love offering” route, rather than a guaranteed fee,  the speaker takes a real risk of not having their expenses met, but, where churches & similar non-profits are involved, the speaker often will agree to it in order to not put a burden on the cash-strapped host organization.

Good points.  I always thought the accusation that they scammed churches was insulting to the church goers.   As if they were all too stupid to know what their love offering was for.  Also, it seemed like the concept was that it was a bunch of little old ladies who only had a dollar in their purse.  People w/money also attend church.

Every where I look Kate is being called a liar (R&K interview?) and I think that’s most people’s biggest problem with her.

With all due respect, I disagree. I think people who already have a problem with her (for various reasons, most of which have less to do with Kate than with the people themselves) call her a liar to try to discredit her as a person. She’s been called a liar for such “inconsistencies” as saying that her kids didn’t eat fast food, when a Happy Meal box is clearly (emphasis not mine) visible in a shot from one of the Utah episodes. With that level of scrutiny, and using that loose a definition of “liar”, I think many people would not pass a honesty test.
I can’t remember if I was the one who brought up photoshopping but my point was certainly not to disparage how great Kate looks naturally. Magazine covers are retouched to the point where people don’t even look real – skin is impossibly smooth. It seems like some mags (fashion mags, mostly) will whittle the waists and thighs of even the thinnest women. I don’t really like it because it sets an impossible standard for beauty. Kate looks great on the cover of People and she looks great in the unretouched photos we’ve seen. She should be very proud.
I’ve been following the Sidibe controversy, Anya. It’s interesting to me. I think it’s common when retouching to lighten/brighten skin to “open up” a face – Sidibe’s features do look more distinct in the lightened photo. But I think lightening the skin of black woman, especially a dark-skinned black woman, especially when it’s done by a magazine that rarely has black women on the cover – is, to put it mildly, ill-advised.

another take on the church offering thing: i am a christian and our church takes up many love offerings for people. we don’t pay speakers or musicians but we do take up love offerings.

one thing we have always been taught in our church is that when we give we should first pray about what to give. and what we give is no longer ours. when we give in obedience to god there is no way to feel badly for having done so…despite what the recipients may do with the $$.

this also goes for monies given to help those in need. we aren’t naive enough to think that all the monies we give are to completely honest people. so the mom who calls and needs money for such nd such may very well use it for something else.

we don’t research all the requests for food/rent/utility payments/etc. but having said that our church does sometimes pay a light bill directly to the utility company or the rent to the landlord.

so if i were duped by someone to whom i gave $$ i wouldn’t feel that way…i’d feel that i gave to the lord and he will bless that giving.

JennieIW- I don’t think any human being could live up to the standards for “honesty,” that the khaterz have set for Kate.  Showing that exceptions have been made does not prove that a rule does not exist. I’m sure there have been times, for instance, where maternal aversion to fast food has had to contend with hungry children and a lack of health alternatives, and the needs of the hungry children have won.

Uhm, I wonder who would do that :)?  But I still think that Kate used to say things for effect – how she wanted to make it seem (or believed it to be) vs. the actual truth.    I’ve only seen bits and pieces of the new show, so I can’t really comment on that.   Though I think since she’s had some media training, and has a well planned out direction of where she wants to go, Kate has eased up on the “I will never….”.

their lives have changed so much and the mere fact that kate doesn’t stay home with them all day every day and that the family travels more means those things change.

but even at that when i’ve seen the kids eating at restaurants or even at bald head kate makes sure they get veggies and eat healthily more often than not.

I’ve been following this blog since before it was IW. (I LOVED the old site!) I know the PennMommy saga and it’s part of why I’m way skeptical that Kate’s mom would post here. Why here? Why not at Baby Momma’ s site, as she’s a huge Kate supporter? Why not give some proof of who you are to prove that her family gives her support? Surely that would help more than anonymous posting on a small message board? I could post as ‘Saint’ Jodi and start a Facebook page as her and who would know it wasn’t her? People post rumor and innuendo about Kate all the time based on ‘I know someone, trust me’ ‘I was on the crew, trust me’ ‘I saw it, trust me’.  And everyone is skeptical but wait, this time it’s really true, promise?  I’m not trying to be mean, sincerely, but you can’t be a random person o the Internet and expect people to give you the benefit of the doubt because you asked nicely.

We are not really going to entertain this topic multiple times. We (one of us) actually have met with Kate’s mom in Hershey, PA and spent the afternoon with her. We have mentioned that numerous times.

Some of us are friends of both Kate’s mom and her sister on Facebook and have full access to all posts and family photos and their friends list and this would be pretty hard to make up since these other family members and friends post comments on their pages all the time. That would be a pretty hard thing to maintain ( posting as multiple, multiple family and friends on a facebook page just to fool us.)

So believe or not believe – but from this point on I am going to delete these type of questions or comments because it gets tiring answering it over and over. I do understand but it is not our desire to insist that you believe us.

Atlanta starts Oct. 4th (I don’t know this off the top of my head – I checked LOL)  Can’t wait, though I think now that NeNe and Sheree have gotten some attention it has all gone to their head so they are overly aware of their actions now.    Beverly Hills is also starting in October, and that one looks good too.

I’m a little slow today – I wanted to make sure I took some good pics at my nephew’s football game yesterday and ended up taking over 1,200!  It took me 5 hours to download and sort through them.  I’ve only edited 200 so far and my eyes are going to bug out of my head when I am done going through them!  I’m very happy the way they turned out though, and am hoping that I can turn this into a side business.  Several people on the photography boards I participate in sell action shots of kids in the game to parents, and one of my brother’s friends asked if I would take pictures of her 2 sons.

This past Sunday we had a group speak and sing at our church. They asked for a set price and we hoped the collection plate would help cover the costs. Who knows what expenses the group incures on the road as they travel to and from many places around the state on a bus. We never have had tickets, just a love offering, so as adults you give from your heart.

Great fall days ahead, the tree’s are turning, the pumpkin stands are set up, and just a nip in the air. God is telling us, it’s time to stop and look around, take a deep breath, and enjoy this time before we are covered in the fluffy stuff.

Thanks for the updated blog, loaded fast.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lily, I have more than 12,000 photos on various back up drives, and much of that is due to my DSLR and how fast it takes pictures.  I’m horrible at deleted the ones I don’t want – even if the picture is out out focus I still see potential!  I’m learning slowly to get over it.  I remember there used to be a poster on GDNNOP and for the life of I can’t remember name – she was a moderator and I think she was going to graduate school and her dad was a preacher? – who was talking about how many photos and videos she had of her nephew and I remember having a conversation with her back then about editing out the bad photos because really, if I was gone, no one is going to take the time to go through all those photos lol.

Ann – lol!  When it comes to photography, it has greatly increased my workload.  (But at least I don’t have to develop them in a darkroom!)

Sue, that was Liz.   I could never go through that many pics, I would not have the patience.   I like digital because it allows the throw-away of the ones that don’t turn out.   LOL, I drag them right to the waste basket.  I think it’s fantastic that some others are interested in having you take pics.

I did want to mention that listening to  recorded books in the car was one of the ways I tried to increase my little one’s attention span.   Since I started her young, it was kind of hard to find some of the right books.  The narrators spoke too fast for her to catch.  Now, that she’s 7, it’s not a problem and she’s very excited about the stories when we are in the car.  We can do chapter books like Harry Potter now and if she does miss something she wants to go back to hear it.  (I also got her a puppy about 1 1/2 ya, to help w/her attn span and to have her own special friend.  He was sort of a good way to help her keep calm.  It didn’t always work, but it helped.  It worked out great because he is madly in love w/her and she loves that.  He goes w/us in the car whenever possible.)

Lily, my kids want a dog but I keep telling them our lives are too hectic now.  I keep telling them if they clean their rooms every day for 10 minutes/day I would consider it.  Surprisingly, it hasn’t happened yet.  LOL  When you have her listen to the book, do you have her try to read along as well?  That is something I’ve been considering but haven’t gotten around to it.

    Is Liz still around?

The dog was a big decision and I have only the one little one left at home.  I already had two dogs. One is too old to play much w/her and the other was one I was watching for my son for awhile.  If I had more than one little one, it would have been harder to decide. (much harder)  Now, it’s just the two dogs and my little one has a fuzzy sib.   Lol, I’m surprised yours haven’t latched on to that deal.

She wasn’t reading at the time we started listening to the books.  She was about 4, it was all for listening and attention span.   That’s an interesting idea though.  I might see if she wants to do that for the next book.

    Liz isn’t on IW anymore.

I’m coming into this discussion a little late. I haven’t read the article yet, I usually just check out the “Archive” section of People a few weeks later & read. Way up thread Sue, made the comment that she hopes that Kate is honest about what she’s had done to improve her appearance. I too get annoyed when people act like suddenly their boobs grew 2 sizes while the rest of their body shrunk 3- & it’s all because of hard work! I hope Kate was honest in the article or that she avoided those types of questions rather than give false info. While it’s nobody’s business whether she’s had enhancements, botox, etc. But if one agrees to do an article about these issues, I’d hope they would be honest. I have personally had breast augmentation & I think I speak for other women that have as well- we can spot others a mile away that have been enhanced. 😉

When you have her listen to the book, do you have her try to read along as well? – Sue

Sue, this is immensely beneficial even for children who have no learning problems.  I love “The Daily Five” method of running a literacy block at school.  One of “The Daily Five” is listening to reading…everyday.  Children listen to a book on CD, the computer, tape, Internet, MP3 player, or are read to.  They hear how fluent reading sounds, improve listening comprehension, but most of all, learn to love stories. Just about everyone loves to be read to.
