July! We have passed the halfway mark of 2012. Before you know it……..Christmas! Ok, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s enjoy July and all of the months in between. 🙂
What’s notable about July?
One of our frequently used sayings in our family growing up was “knee high by the 4th of July.” We were seed corn farmers and the old “knee high” adage meant that if your corn reached the height of your knee by the 4th of July, your crop was right where it was suppose to be and you would have a good yield and a good year! Here is wishing a bountiful growing season for all of the farmers out there.
The most notable thing for those of us in the United States would probably be the celebration of Independence Day, commonly known as the 4th of July commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Parades, barbecues, picnics, concerts and baseball all culminating in a magnificent display of fireworks in the evening.
For our neighbors to the north, July 1st is Canada Day. It is a holiday “celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act, 1867, in Canada), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire.” My understanding is that it is celebrated much the same as the 4th of July is celebrated in the U.S.
What are your plans for these holidays?
And if the above celebrations don’t give you a good enough reason to love July, how about the fact that it is National Blueberry Month, Ice Cream Month and Hot Dog Month? Sounds to me like that would seal the deal!
In the meantime, Happy Birthday to all of our July birthdays! Let us know in the comment section if you have a birthday or anniversary this month so we can help celebrate it with you and wish you a Happy Birthday on our brand new marquee on the top of the home page here at Imperfect Women. Open Discussion as always!
Hey, how is everyone doing. I haven’t commented in a while, too much stuff going on over the last couple of months. I was wondering if any of you can share any advice or experiences of anyone in your family that has had their tonsils removed. My g-daughter is having hers out next week and i am super nervous.
Oh my I can imagine you would be nervous for your grand-daughter! I only have some second had experience with it. A friend of mine’s son who was 7 at the time had his tonsils removed. It was a pretty easy time for him. He had the surgery on friday AM and was out playing by Saturday afternoon. Seems to me he had a lot of problems with reoccurring infections. I am not much help but best wishes to you and your granddaughter!
My oldest son had his tonsils out at the age of 4. I am a nurse and I knew it was medically necessary. Things went really well for him and he was much healthier afterwards.
Thanks guys, she has had strep ten times over the last few months and her tonsils are so large that it is causing sleep apnea so it has to be done. I have heard stories about how painful it is and I can’t bear the thought of her being in pain even though I know it has to be done. Sometimes I think I worry more about my grandkids thanI did about my own kids.
Carol,
There is some discomfort but easily taken care of with Children’s Tylenol and Popsicles. Let us know how it goes.
I’ll keep her in my thoughts and prayers, Carol. I am sure she will be fine. I heard it’s best to have them out when you are young.
How is everyone celebrating the Fourth?
Thanks everyone, we are in the midst of a terrible heat wave and fireworks are being banned and I am afraid it will be too hot for much cooking out. I think the only way to celebrate will involve swimming and air-conditioning.
Carol…will be praying for a good outcome for your granddaughter. Seems my kids would get thisclose to scheduling a tonsilectomy, then we would get healthy!
Good News!!! I have reached the 50lb weight loss mark!!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!!!
Hi Carol! My daughter had her tonsils and adnoids removed a few years ago. She was 6 or 7 at the time. I was pretty nervous, not knowing what to expect. It was a same day surgery type thing. Once she woke up, they gave her a popsicle and let her rest a bit. When they told us we could take her home, getting out of bed caused some nausea so be prepared for the upset tummy. The biggest thing I would say is make sure she stays hydrated. She isn’t going to want to drink, at least my daughter didn’t, and she started to get a fever. That’s when I really had to push the liquids which helped. The doc also prescribed a numbing sucker which was helpful. Lots of popsicles like Pam said. It really wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be.
I will say that once she healed life greatly improved for her! I didn’t realize that her tonsils were the reason for her slow eating habits. She was always the last one done. Her snoring stopped, she slept better/more rested, she could run longer, her runny nose quit and she just felt better in general. It really was worth it.
I hope everything goes well with her surgery!
Carol.
My nephew had this surgery when he was 4, and two days later he was up and running around with my sister keeping a watchful eye on him. He snored so bad, and when this was all over, we kept checking on him through the night to make sure he was breathing. LOL. He is an young man today and it was the best thing for him. Sending thoughts your way for a speedy recovering. Grandma’s are the best when little ones don’t feel well.
Thank you all so much for your kind words. It is always good to hear personal accounts of what to expect, that’s why I asked here, I knew I could get some common-sense realistic answers. Imperfect Women Rocks!!!!!
Thanks Carol and way to go Kmom2. What an accomplishment!
Wow Kmom Congratulations! You must be feeling great!
Great job Kmom! I bet you are feeling so proud of yourself!!!
Kmom,
Way to go!
Snickers, your pickles are featured right now on our home page sliding marquee. 🙂
Thanks for the encouragment everyone…..I do feel a lot better and have more energy. I was pretty happy when I stepped on the scale yesterday morning. I still have a long way to go, but I am over 1/3 of the way there!!!!!! Thanks again!!! I have to echo Carol…..Imperfect Women ROCKS!!! 😉
Pam,
Thanks, glad to share!
Hope everyone has a happy 4th! Stay safe and enjoy the fireworks.
Happy 4th of July to everyone. Hope you are all staying cool.
It has been raining in our area, however, that will not spoil my annual plans to watch A Capitol Fourth on PBS. Tom Bergeron is joining the cast this year. I always look forward to the concert and fireworks. The Memorial Day concert was cut short because of the storm in Washington, DC that night. So, I am hoping this will not be a repeat.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PAM!!!
May you get everything you wish for today and all throughout the year.
🙂
Whoa, Kmom2, I am very impressed. I just started watching my weight again this morning. I really don’t like dieting, but, I am at the age where not watching what I eat = a creeping weight gain over the months. How did you lose?
Happy Birthday Pam!!!
Hope you have wonderful day filled with Christain Grey! 🙂

YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO congrats!!!!!!!
Happy Birthday Pam. I wish you Health, Happiness and Wealth.
Congrats Kmom2. You would think this hot weather would melt some weight off. I guess wishing does not hurt.
Who the hell got a hold of my marquee???????????????/
Pam really shouldn’t leave me the keys to the website and not expect mayham…should she?
Thank you ladies.
THANKS, Ann, Mojito and Rosemary! It’s not been easy, but worth it for sure. I still have quite a ways to go, but I’m over a third of the way there.
Ann, I had lapband surgery, but it’s been hard…the lapband is only a tool to help lose, not a solution. I am on a 1200 calorie a day diet but most days don’t get that many in. My saviors has been Flintstone’s Complete Gummy Vitamins, and AdvantEDGE protein shakes. They make sure I am getting all my nutrients in without eating a lot of food. I make sure at any meal I eat my protein first, carbs last and I try to act as though I am allergic to bread. Lots of things I miss…..brown rice being the most missed, but I’m doing good. THis time of the year makes it easy to eat lots of fruit and veggies.
Thank you all again…..I can’t express how much I appreciate the kind words and encouragment. Rosemary, I agree, this hot weather should melt the weight off!!!!!
Happy Birthday Pam! I wish you many many more!
Pam,
Happy Birthday friend. Wishing you many more, and I would hope Pattypie would make you a special cake or a yummy desert to send your way. 🙂
Happy Birthday Pam!!
Thanks everyone! You may email be all virtual cakes and pies. Maybe the pounds will stay off that wasy. 🙂
Lol Loved the marquee!
Pretty interesting……More info that the tide is turning…..

In 2010, influenced by the Tea Party and its focus on fiscal issues, 17 states elected Republican governors. And, according to an Examiner.com analysis, every one of those states saw a drop in their unemployment rates since January of 2011. Furthermore, the average drop in the unemployment rate in these states was 1.35%, compared to the national decline of .9%, which means, according to the analysis, that the job market in these Republican states is improving 50% faster than the national rate.
Since January of 2011, here is how much the unemployment rate declined in each of the 17 states that elected Republican governors in 2010, according to the Examiner:
Kansas – 6.9% to 6.1% = a decline of 0.8%
Maine – 8.0% to 7.4% = a decline of 0.6%
Michigan – 10.9% to 8.5% = a decline of 2.4%
New Mexico – 7.7% to 6.7% = a decline of 1.0%
Oklahoma – 6.2% to 4.8% = a decline of 1.4%
Pennsylvania – 8.0% to 7.4% = a decline of 0.6%
Tennessee – 9.5% to 7.9% = a decline of 1.6%
Wisconsin – 7.7% to 6.8% = a decline of 0.9%
Wyoming – 6.3% to 5.2% = a decline of 1.1%
Alabama – 9.3% to 7.4% = a decline of 1.9%
Georgia – 10.1% to 8.9% = a decline of 1.2%
South Carolina – 10.6% to 9.1% = a decline of 1.5%
South Dakota – 5.0% to 4.3% = a decline of 0.7%
Florida – 10.9% to 8.6% = a decline of 2.3%
Nevada – 13.8% to 11.6% = a decline of 2.2%
Iowa – 6.1% to 5.1% = a decline of 1.0%
Ohio – 9.0% to 7.3% = a decline of 1.7%
On the other hand, the unemployment rate in states that elected Democrats in 2010 dropped, on average, as much as the national rate decline and, in some states such as New York, the unemployment rate has risen since January of 2011.
This is yet another example of how the so-called “blue state” model is not working.
If the national average is 0.9% and PA’s is only 0.6%, it’s not really better here is it? That’s depressing. 🙁
Of course, I see we are below 8% unemployment, and that’s better than the national average. 🙂
I am looking at it that way, though I’d like for every state to be below 5% unemployment, and soon.
You could be in some cities where it’s upwards of 14%.
I am watching the new series on HBO “Newsroom”. I wanted to like it because the writing in the beginning was very good. Now it’s become a running commercial for the the left and blatantly so. I am glad that if it keeps on going this way it won’t last and I have a remote.
Am I ever behind the 8-ball! Can anyone tell me what a ‘land hurricane’ is? That’s what happened here in the DC surrounds & beyond…100+* heat & winds up to 90 mph. Looks more like a tornado hit, but we only lost electricity for 3 1/2 days…others for a wk. or more.
A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO IW’s very own retired nurse w. a mission of – healthy chatter! (Thank you, Pam!)
Rosemary…could it be that you are in our area? ;0) Our son & his bride went to the Capitol 4th…1 1/2 hrs. to get thru’ security. TESTED ALL bottles for ‘explosives’…& alcohol. (It was 98* at 9 PM!)
Kmom2 – CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!
HB: I live in North Carolina. I always watch the Capitol Fourth on PBS. I love PBS, especially all the British mysteries. Downton Abby is a favorite also.
HB: So happy that you have your electricity back.
Thank you, HB!
Stu,
Aaron Sorkin…what did you expect? I am enjoying the series so far. I really liked West Wing. I just have to ignore some of it and take it for what it is, entertainment.
I knew it was Sorkin….but last night was over the top. Bill Ma her would have been jealous.
Rosemary…I share your love of the Brits! ;0) PBS has an ad for an all Brit channel, but no info as to when or if our cable provider will carry it??? I’d have to say As Time Goes By is my go-to for pure delight. Love Foyle’s War…to Downton Abby…etc. I share a guilty pleasure (so I read – w. the Queen) a soap – EastEnders. We finally just ordered boxed CD’s of all their mystery series. Too difficult to keep up when t.v. is NOT a priority – we’d rather be reading.
HB: I think that you and I are about the same age. A new Inspector Lewis series started last night. I hope they make more Zen. I watched and will continue to watch Wallender, but he is a little moody for me. Did you see Endeavor? He captured Morse very well. I have seen all of As Time Goes By several times, but I still watch it. Foyle’s war is in reruns, but I am watching them again. I have never really gotten into EastEnders, but my son loves it. I have not watched The Queen, but I will seek it out. They are making a third season of Downton Abby, and Shirley MacLaine is joining the cast. I can hardly wait for fall. I read more in the summer.
Sorry HB, I reread your comment. You share an interest with the queen. LOL, I must need a nap. The heat is frying my brain (could not be an age thingy).
;0) Rosemary…nothing wrong w. your reading skills! It’s all about my very LAZY attempt to get a thought out w/o the correct punctuation. Anyway, you are right. I gave myself permission to seek out EastEnders…thinking IF Queen Eliz. liked it, perhaps it was another As Time Goes By series. Nope. It’s a soap that must be foreign to any Royal…w. incredible acting, NO staged sets, & devilish story lines. (I can well understand a male enjoying it.)
There is a God!!!!!
Dem. Chair Invested in Swiss Banks, Foreign Drug Companies, and the State Bank of India
Disclosure forms reveal that Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a member of Congress from Florida, previously held funds with investments in Swiss banks, foreign drug companies, and the state bank of India. This revelation comes mere days after the Democratic chair attacked presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for holding money in Swiss bank accounts in the past.
On July 13, enjoy a free Tall (12 fl oz) handcrafted drink at participating US and CA stores. http://sbux.co/ML38pq
Holly – Ms. W. Schultz is becoming the Howard Dean of the DNC. Sadly she is not as entertaining. Imagine – she went on to say ‘it would be nice if we had a candidate for president who was committed to America’. Meanwhile, the DNC has a huge campaign to raise funds across the globe. Legal? Of course it is, yet how many who vote read beyond a headline? Not many!
ALMOST as many ‘middle America’ are fleeing states w. humongous tax burdens…MD to CA. Since Jan.2012, our small neighborhood in VA has seen 5 homes sell to young couples just across the border… MD! Just how scary to think 1/2 the country is on the public dole in some form, or so wealthy they’ve become the willing cash cows paying for an overburdened ‘safety net’. Obama wants the Bush tax cuts for middle America extended??? IF those tax cuts are good for them, why not for ALL? Makes ZERO sense…to me.
Great find, Holly! I guess if you live in a glass house, you shouldn’t throw stones.
As far as Politicians go,there is not one that I can think of that I find as combative, divisive, and more of a liar than Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Talk about setting the “Women’s Movement” back, she is an embarassment to Women and an example of all that is bad in politics!
It’s National Blueberry Muffin Day. That’s my fav muffin.
Just thought everyone should know. 😉
There must be a God #2
Nancy Pelosi made between $1-5 million on Asian investments in 2011!
“On the heels of The Weekly Standard’s report yesterday that DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz — a vocal critic of Mitt Romney‘s investing practices, had herself dabbled in the foreign markets — we can add Nancy Pelosi to the list of prominent Democrats to profit from overseas investments.
According to Pelosi’s 2011 financial disclosure statement, the Democratic House Minority Leader received between $1 million and $5 million in partnership income from ”Matthews International Capital Management LLC,” a group that emphasizes that it has a “A Singular Focus on Investing in Asia.” A quick trip to the company website reveals a featured post extolling the virtues of outsourcing.
“Designed in California, Made in Manila” sounds like an excellent title for a smear ad to be run the by the Barack Obama campaign. Instead, it appears to be Nancy Pelosi’s investment strategy.
Pelosi is also a small investor in the embattled “Moduslink Global,” one of the “outsourcing pioneers” that Mitt Romney has been criticized for associating with while at Bain Capital.”
All of these politicians are a joke and they are laughing all the way to the bank!
Hi everyone! We decided to start a thread each month for open discussion on politics and current events/news separate from the lounge……so as we don’t mix politics with pleasure, LOL.
Please feel free to venture over there and post whatever you would like to discuss.
https://imperfectwomen.com/julys-open-discussin-for-news-and-politics/
Today’s poll is fun. When I was a kid, we drank out of the hose on hot summer days, and I also ran inside to grab a piece of bologna or cold hot dog to eat when I got hungry, because I was far too busy to stop for lunch! LOL LOL
Us too, Kmom2! We would drink from the hose always. We also had this place where we would go in the summer and play and drink the spring water right out of the ground. OMG! Would never do that today! But I have to say it was some of the best water I had ever tasted.
You mean you didn’t like my poll from yesterday where I revealed my husband’s bad habits? LOL
Not at all…I always love your polls and I think we all know husbands with bad habits like yours….lol lol
My grandparents had a farm in the southern part of our state and we would go down there for a couple weeks in the summer and their well water was the coldest, best tasting water I have ever had. Although I have to admit that my former in-laws used to live in a major metropolitan city and their tap water was FABULOUS!
Today is Cow Appreciation Day! Give a cow a hug. 😉 ………….ok, coming from Wisconsin, you know I had to post this.
Pam: Will hugging a rib eye count?
LMAO!…….I guess it is the next best thing. Or a glass of milk if you swing the way of dairy instead of beef. 😉
Hi everyone, tonsils came out last week and so far it has not been too bad. The second day was very painful for her but other than that not too bad. We had no trouble at all getting her to drink and she was actually hungry on the first day and had some mac and cheese. The Dr. said to split pain med. in half and give evry two hours instead of four to keep it from wearing out of her system and that really helped. She has been eating a ton of popsicles and a lot of french toast. I am feeling very relieved today because I think she is almost back to normal. Thanks again to Pattypie, Pam, Ann, Mojoito, Snickers ,Kmom and everyone else who took the time to reassure me and say a prayer for my g-daughter.
Carol: Great to hear that she is doing well. Grandchildren are special.
Carol,
Really good to hear. Kids are amazing how they get through just about anything. It us adults that need the hand holding. LOL
Thanks Rosemary, you are so right g-kids are very special. Pam that’s so true, I think I suffered more than she did!
Carol,
So happy to hear things are going well. When all healed, a special treat for her would be Grandma and little one to have lunch out somewhere together. I think ice cream for desert is a must!
Carol….YIPPEE!!!! So glad everything went well and she’s almost back to normal. I don’t have any grandchildren, but I am well aware of the special place in the heart they occupy of their grandparents. Hope the rest of her summer and yours is FABULOUS!!!
Happy 94th birthday to Nelson Mandela!
Thank you so much Snickers and KMOM, Snickers that sounds like a wonderful idea, I love spending time with her, and she loves a new frozen yogurt place that just opened in our town, so that’s probably where we will go,and KMOM you are so right G_KIDS are so special!
I think that my summer will get better now that this is behind us!
Today’s Poll needs an “All of the above” option. I had rather read a good book than clean any day. But, alas, we do what we have to do. I do have a cleaning lady that comes once a month.
Rosemary, I use to love to clean…..or should I say I love a clean house. Now, I know longer enjoy anything about cleaning. I had a weekly cleaning crew when I was working and I was one of those people that would clean before the cleaning crew got to my house. LOL
Now my son has a cleaning crew also (once a month) and he says he now understands why you have to straighten up before they come. But my kids and my husband use to make fun of me for doing so.
Happy National Cheesecake Day! What is your favorite kind?
Pam,
Strawberry!! Yum.
Snickers,
Sounds great. Someone mentioned Pumpkin on Twitter and I was all for that too!
I like cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory. YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
Okay, curly haired ladies… I recently got a body wave perm and need something that will help hold curly, no frizz but I don’t want any “stiff” hair… any suggestions??
I’ll probably have to take this to the August open thread tomorrow…
