Another New Year! Welcome to 2013!

In the spirit of National Thank You month, we’d like to thank our IW readers. Thank you for making IW the wonderful place that it is. We appreciate your time and comments.

On January 8, 1935, The King of Rock & Roll was born. Many will be traveling to Memphis to pay homage to Elvis Presley. If Elvis was still with us in body, he would be 79. His music lives on forever.

Made a New Year’s Resolution you just can’t stick to? You must hold on until January 17, when it’s officially Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day. If you quit before then, the resolution police may hunt you down.

Hug your Pooh bear on January 18th, because it’s Winnie The Pooh Day! Pooh Day is held on the birthday of creator and author, A.A .Milne born in 1882. Christopher Robin and the gang will be partying down in the hundred acre wood.

Be sure to check out IW’s newest blogger, Molly. Molly, the mother of twin boys (two of the cutest babies ever seen) joined IW in December. You can find her first two blog posts here.

Bored? Don’t be. PattyPie finds all sorts of tidbits and shares them in Interesting Stuff I Found On The Internet Volume 5.

Many were very busy during the holidays. If you happened to miss Emil’s article, Plow Boy Smoke, you missed something good. Emil is a talented writer and it is a pleasure to read his contributions to IW.

IW is chock-full of excellence.  Each month we will be featuring an IW Classic.  This month’s classic article is an interview with Robbie Kay, The Beauty of Wisdom.

Robbie Kaye traveled throughout the U.S. by car, interviewing and photographing women in their 70′s, 80′s and 90′s at the beauty parlor. Her goal is to widen the perception of beauty in a culture that is primarily focused on the beauty of youth. Her images evoke a new view on aging, shedding light on this almost forgotten generation and preserving ritual and technique and the history that these women have contributed so greatly to.

We would also like to give a shout out to everyone with a birthday or anniversary this month! Let us know in the comment section below so we can celebrate with you. Please use this thread for Open Discussion as always!

Hope you all are having a great year so far. We are getting ready for spring sports and only have a few weeks of high school basketball left.

I’ve had a few health scares recently, first I had a biopsy of my bladder to rule out cancer, still haven’t received the results yet. During my regular routine mammogram the saw a few suspicious spots, had to go for an ultrasound today, the spots are very large cysts. I have to make the decision to have them removed or just drained soon. It’s been a crazy few days. My husband has been my rock through all of this.

Yes, our high school season ends around the end of January – beginning of Feb and then there are playoffs. Earlier season in California than the midwest. Must be the same in Texas. Brings back a lot of memories when I talk to you, stxmom. Both of my sons were involved in basketball and one in baseball in high school.

I will be thinking of you with all of the health issues and I hope everything turns out ok. Let us know. Kudos to your husband!

Look at the last several years, baseball, football, track and field. The scandal never seems to quit. Millions of dollars for contracts is one of the reason that this continues. Nike and all sports stuff sold, use their names to market their products. I do think the sport world needs to look at this.

As far as him doping, he only hurt his own body, but destroyed his families dreams. He also hurt his own teammates, which is so sad.

    HB and everyone,
I wonder if you have any thoughts on this, personally, I am disgusted:

(WASHINGTON FREE BEACON) – The Obama administration’s proposed defense budget calls for military families and retirees to pay sharply more for their healthcare, while leaving unionized civilian defense workers’ benefits untouched. The proposal is causing a major rift within the Pentagon, according to U.S. officials. Several congressional aides suggested the move is designed to increase the enrollment in Obamacare’s state-run insurance exchanges.

The disparity in treatment between civilian and uniformed personnel is causing a backlash within the military that could undermine recruitment and retention.
The proposed increases in health care payments by service members, which must be approved by Congress, are part of the Pentagon’s $487 billion cut in spending. It seeks to save $1.8 billion from the Tricare medical system in the fiscal 2013 budget, and $12.9 billion by 2017…

Holly – I can only speak to our personal Tricare coverage – there are many categories. As of last July, our Tricare payout rose 12%. This article reflects what has been going on for MONTHS. As for military healthcare – it’s something that WE ALL have paid for in deductions from pay for decades. While in large part, I believe John Q Public thinks this is FREE for all service members…for most, it is not.

You’re ‘disgusted’? Nationalized healthcare is HERE ~ During the Clinton years, he managed to CLOSE most military clinics forcing Tricare to balloon. After 8 yrs. of Bush & WAR…those clinics were reopened or expanded w. less demands on Tricare. In our circle of military friends…all of our healthcare will be dumped into Obama’s pool of those lining-up for a ‘hand out’…behind the 11M illegal immigrants.

    HB,
So Sorry! In CA Anthem BC just raised their rates 21% and Aetna will do the same next month. They also just changed their policy to charge those with pre-existing conditions as high as a 300% rate up when it used to be 100% was the max. Even at 100% no one can afford it. What a disaster. The most serious “untended consequence” of Obamacare will be the serious shortage of Doctors. Droves of Doctors are leaving Medicine and either retiring or becoming consultants or changing their practice to become a “Concierge Practice” serving only those who can afford to pay a $2000-$4000 fee upfront. What a mess. Probably half of our Health Insurance Clients have either canceled their insurance or have downgraded to a crappy catastrophic plan.

The super plan was not to denie anyone health care, but the cost will take care of many. The little pill will be avaiable to anyone who will suffer as treatment will not be there for many with cancer, etc. Shameful! I volunteer at a cancer center, and the last few weeks, patients were being denied procedures because of Obama care.

Just a quick update – I have an appointment with a surgeon on Feb 13 to discuss removing my cysts. I’m on the waiting list in case they have a cancellation before then. Tomorrow I’m picking up all my medical records and films to take with me to my appt so I will not have to wait for surgeon to request them. Hoping they get me scheduled for surgery quickly, I’m not sure how much longer I can handle the pain much longer. I have prescription pain meds but they make me so sleepy that I can’t function. I have lots of help with the kids, our wonderful sitter is still here, in laws are nearby for the winter and hubby cancelled all his out of town committments until we get through this. I’m still going to work every day.

Only 2 more basketball games left in the regular season, as of right now we are tied for 4th, top 4 teams advance to playoffs.

Same here, been there done it, and prayers for you always! It’s so scary that people are getting denied basic human care. I have heard this was coming, but hearing the nurses tell patients they can’t have a scan or an x-ray because with the Obamacare care set in motion with health insurance, medicare, etc, breaks my heart. Snickers,
You are absolutely right, “this plan is never going to work”! The people who will benefit from it are the very poor, the low income earners and the very rich. Those of us in the middle are going to bear the cost of covering everyone else. As far a Congress doing something, they did something already, they passed the Health Care Bill! What does it matter to them? They have the best health care in the World and are exempt from Obamacare! You know living in CA a majority of our Clients were very excited about the election and about the Health Care Bill. They are the same people who are furious that their Anthem Premiums just went up 21% or that their Doctor no longer takes Health Insurance (the reimbursement is too low)I think they deserve what they get! Even my Sister who is a Doctor and loves Obama cannot understand how this happened! She was almost out of a job when they were going to cut Medicare reimbursement to Doctors by 27% and now the Insurance Companies are questioning every test and every prescription, Oh Well! Somehow these people never got further than a soundbite! Read the first 25 pages of the Health Care Bill and you could get a pretty clear picture. Sorry for the rant!

This is not until 2016 but 2014 is not much better! More importantly this is for the Bronze Plan in the Health Exchange which is the plan with the poorest benefits!
CNSNews.com) – In a final regulation issued Wednesday, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) assumed that under Obamacare the cheapest health insurance plan available in 2016 for a family will cost $20,000 for the year.
If you want to know what your rate will be for Health Insurance next year, you can go to http://www.kff.org They have excellent info on the Health Care Bill. Go to the Health Reform Source tab and then to Interactive Features. Under that category is a Subsidy Calculator. If you put in your info and your State you will be able to get an idea of your cost and what you qualify for. In CA a 55 year old making $50,000 a year will have to pay over $800 a month for coverage and they qualify for no subsidy at all! I think most people in this category will pay the fine! Also, you most likely will NOT be able to keep your own Doctor even though the President insisted you will because the only way you can get a subsidy is if you go into the Gov’t Health Exchange. If you keep your private insurance you cannot get a subsidy!

With 3 yrs. remaining to fine-tune (HA), one can only imagine that ‘loopholes’ will be plugged w. MORE suffocating, irrational penalties. The burgeoning IRS recruits – as bright as the average DMV employee, & it is no secret that CYBER SECURITY is woefully lacking for national security. One can only imagine what kind of so-called security our health records have! Minimal. It’s all I can do to modify my own rage ~ How could so many citizens actually believe GOVERNMENT would/could do a better job as AFFORDABLE health care providers!

    HB,
They will be hiring 16,000 new IRS employees to check your tax return and make sure you have the appropriate Health Insurance or they will assess your fine and apply it. The amount of added paperwork for employers who do offer health insurance will be ridiculous. More concerning is that it really will be “Big Brother” watching you! The Gov’t, not just your personal Health Ins Co., will want and have access to all your personal Medical History, including your Mental Health Records, and they will use it as “they” see fit!
By the time the People, including Democrats, wake up and realize how much this Health Care Bill is hurting them through hidden taxes, raising Medicare Costs, increases in Premiums and the lack of Doctors nothing will be able to change it. It’s funny my Sister was complaining that her Husband received a bonus (he’s an Attorney) and it was taxed at 50% and they even had to put more away just in case and she thought this was wrong and unfair! My answer was: “you voted for it”!
