I am now a business owner. Wow! I never thought those words would come out of my mouth.
When I was a little girl, around the age of seven, I would make these little insects with this Creepy Crawlers Bug Maker machine and set up a little shop, using a piano bench in our living room, and sell them to my sisters. I can clearly remember getting all the little bugs lined up into different categories before I “opened up shop.” I would sell them for a penny, nickel, or ten cents for the fancy multicolor bugs. It was my oldest sister who was my biggest fan. Oh, wait. I mean customer. I have always wanted to become a business owner from a young age, but never thought I would because I never knew what that business would be, and being a “business owner” sounds so prestigious; I would never really be able to own a business.
My mother-in-law and father-in-law came up from California recently for a visit. I wanted to do a photo shoot just for them. They do not get to see the boys very often, and I wanted to make it something special for them. We went to a nearby park and I got some great photos of the boys with Grandpa and Grandma.
With that said, I thought, “Why not provide this service to other people? “ I love taking photographs, and ever since my twin boys were born, I haven’t been able to put the camera down. It’s incredibly addicting. I’m not a “professional”, but I’ve learned how to photograph two little moving targets while capturing some amazing and memorable moments. I’ve learned to use different angles, that it can very well take fifty photographs in order to get that one perfect picture, and that every millisecond can give you a ton of completely different emotions.
I’ve been wanting to have “professional” photographs taken of the family, but, honestly, it is so expensive! We cannot afford that. Not only is there just the sitting fee, but then the additional charges to do wardrobe changes or additional people, only getting the rights to one image and having to pay an absurd amount of money to purchase more and the insane amount of money they want to print the pictures. Personally, I’d be extremely happy to get some great photos taken at an extremely reasonable rate, have printing rights to all of the images, and being able to go down to Costco and print them myself. I don’t even need a professional; I just want some great pictures to capture all these memories.
I thought there must be other people in the same boat as me. I want to give everyone an affordable option to be able to get some great high quality photos taken.
I love taking photographs so much that I’m not just looking to make as much money as I can. I’d like to earn a little money, mainly for my time, but I’m more interested in people being able to cherish the memories with their loved ones. And this can be done with a simple photo. I know that I have so much fun looking back at all of the pictures that I have taken of the boys. I will never get this time back and if I don’t capture these moments, they will be gone so fast, and I will have nothing to remember them by.
Like I said, I’m not a “professional” photographer, but that is why I’m not charging a ton of money. To be honest, I don’t know every single little thing there is to know about a camera, but while still being able to take great photos, I am learning more and more.
I literally just started my business and now that I finally have my business license in hand, I can finally start advertising more and trying to grow the business. So far, my photo shoots have consisted of children, but I would like to, and plan to, do events and anything else people would like to have photographs taken of. I’m actually volunteering next month to do my first event for a military spouse appreciation day.
The goal of my business is to make my services affordable for everyone. I am only charging $25 an hour, and the client has rights to all of the images to make unlimited prints or post them on social media. There is also a small mileage charge of twenty-five cents a mile; I am willing to travel as close or as far as you would like me to. My hopes are that people will use my services a few times throughout the year at such a low cost in order to capture photos of their children growing versus paying a photographer a few hundred dollars for one session.
I’ve had so much fun with all of the photo shoots that I have completed so far, and I look forward to any and all opportunities that come my way. If I am able to make this even a slight success, I would be extremely happy. This would give me the opportunity to stay home with my boys a little longer, while also doing something that I absolutely love to do. This is truly a dream job for me.
