Are you one of those who arise before the sun to hit the sales? I used to. It was fun, but it was years ago. My mother, sister and I would be there waiting for the doors to open at our favorite store. I think it was some surgery that caused me to initially stop going with them, but they kept going years after I considered it fun. I know when I was working mom, it was a convenient way to get most of the gifts all at once.
It was good times with my mom and sister. After Thanksgiving dinner cleanup, the three of us would sit around the table with all of the store ads listing the times of the certain items and the doorbusters. We plotted our strategy and made our lists.
Off we’d go, early the next morn. After the madness of the hunt, we would return home to laugh and tell tales of glory over Thanksgiving leftovers. We would talk about the gifts we had purchased and how much we hoped the receiver would enjoy it. As our family has aged, our gift giving has changed, we tend to be more practical now. We used to go quite wild with the presents. I no longer find shopping in the malls fun. I’m now on the flip side of being anti-crowd. Now, I like to watch movies, decorate and just hang out the day after Thanksgiving. Tell us, are you out there on Black Friday? Did you survive? If not, what do you like to do with the day? Good luck to all the shoppers!
I would shop on Black Friday, but I’m planning on having my toenails pulled out one by one without anesthetic tomorrow morning. Hard choices, yo.
Seriously, I would not be caught dead getting up at 0’dark-thirty to wait in the dark and the cold with a bunch of crazy people and hope I don’t get trampled so I can get a dvd player 30% off. I will however, likely be tramping out tomorrow night to watching the Union Square tree lighting, and then do a little shopping for my aunt’s birthday on Saturday. I plan to wear spiky shoes in case I need to kick anyone.
Great opening line, Jennie. Explains your feelings pretty well – lol.
My sentiments are similar to Lily’s. My sister and I used to enjoy Black Friday on the Thanksgivings we were together. Today, though, she’s still in bed and I’m about to enjoy my second cup of coffee. Something tells me there will be deals to be had at a more reasonable hour on a different day. Good luck and have fun to those who are jumping in to the spirit of the day!
NO. Never. Nada. Nope. Nah. Nyet. Never. Did I say Never.
I can’t even remember the last time I went shopping on Black Friday. Maybe 20 years ago when my boys were young and money was short.
When I was young it was a tradition in my family to go Christmas shopping on the Friday after Thanksgiving. It was not referred to as Black Friday back then. We did not have shopping near us so my parents and the five of us kids would pile into our car and drive the hour to Dubuque, Iowa to do our Christmas shopping. We had the best time. The city was decorated so beautifully for Christmas. We would spend the whole day and evening there and get to eat both lunch and dinner out which was a big treat for us. My brothers and sister and I would have to get all of the Christmas presents we were buying for our family members that day because the local town only had a Five & Dime back then and there was not a lot to pick from. I can never not remember doing this until I went away to college. I guess I loved Black Friday back then. 🙂
First time was last year. Last time was last year. I got a great deal and spent the money I saved at the doctor’s office because I also got sick. Yep, I’m blaming the crowds at Target.
I plan to wear spiky shoes in case I need to kick anyone.
Good plan. Thanks for the idea.
Yeah, I think I have been invited to tag along with Jennie. I am bringing brass knuckles. (J/K!)
My plan – get in and get out! I am a last minute shopper (and I think plenty of deals will be available later), so I will be doing some shopping, but not necessarily Christimas shopping.
The best part of Black Friday is coming home and heating up the leftovers!
Hope everyone is enjoying their day.
LOL, I wonder if our shoppers have recovered? Hope it was a day of bargains-o-plenty. I was thrilled when I ran to WalMart for water tonight. Spongebob PJ’s for $3 until they were gone! Just what my little one needed. It was late and the place was empty, so they must have had tons of them.
I was one of the lucky employees who get to see the stampedes of the 4am opening of a dept store(: The only thing I can say is it is always interesting to watch people running to get to thier bargains. It was a busy and long day and I was very happy to walk out the door at 2pm. I did pick up 3 items on the way out the door a dog bed, pair of boots for my girlfriend and a snowman for the house:) But my biggest shock was tonight hubby called and said he was going to do some Christmas shopping after work . I had fallen asleep and woke up about 10.30 and went to get a drink of water and found this huge box in the kitchen which was a home theater system and had a note on it Happy early Christmas ………at first I was a little miffed because my husband sometimes buys gifts that he wants for the house and not what I might want. But then I went to get my water and found him installing a flat screen monitor for my computer which really tickled me 🙂 Once I woke up a bit and talked to him I was happy about the home system once he explained all the features and the deal he got on it. The best part was he paid cash for all it so I don’t have any surprises in January.
I went- always do- and I LOVE it. Its like a sport- with prizes 🙂 I LOVE mapping out my plan. I LOVE saving money. I LOVE shopping. We get home around 10pm Thanksgiving night. By the time I go through the sales papers, shower and get to bed its around midnight. I have to start getting ready at 3am so I normally dont go to sleep at all. A few hrs sleep makes me more sluggish than no sleep.
My favorite deal this year I actually purchased online at Sears at midnight- and picked it up at the store yesterday. I didnt have to darken the door on Black Friday, fight the crowds, or pay for shipping- and I got it for 70% off. Can’t beat that.
We were finished and safe at home by 10am. Its one of my favorite days of the year!
Have you all seen those BF Target commericals with the annoyingly perfect woman? Those are SO funny!
Hey Diane, good for you! A new home theater system and monitor! You must have been a very good girl this year. 🙂
How about CYBER Monday? Did anybody else spend Monday getting free shipping, etc. online shopping around? I have soooo many packages coming in the next week. I’m getting all my email confirmations! It’s so exciting!
