My daughter and I were going through some of her out grown clothes in preparation for new school clothes and we thought up a great idea for a craft. So one rainy weekend we sat down and made it.

Start with a old skirt, preferably with pockets.

Cut off bottom of the skirt to the size that you would like your bag.

Turn the skirt inside out and sew the bottom hem together, using a basic basting stitch go left to right, then right to left. Tie off.

Turn the skirt right side out and at the top by the second belt loops sew your desired length and width of ribbon to the front and back creating the handles. Then decorate it as you like. We used iron peace sign patches and one of her bandanas. What my daughter loves about this bag is that she can coordinate the bag to her outfits just by changing the bandanas.

It has handy built in pockets for cell phones and mp3 players!

It was a seriously fun craft to do and really easy too!

I made something similar- oh so many years ago- out of old jeans. We had to insert a triangular shape of material where the leg split, and we didn’t use bandanas! (We also had nothing to put in the pockets- I think they were sewn shut and just decorative. I like yours better.

I made one like that years ago too! This was entirely CraftyKid’s idea I just facilitated the follow through… She makes her mommy proud! She was so bummed when we went to the craft fair today and some one had made something similar to ours, but it made her feel better because ours was way better! One cute thing that women did was overalls…so that is an option too.

LOVE this idea. How wonderful that your daughter came up with it and you two worked on it together. Aw. Chip off the old block, eh?! 🙂

Actually, these would be a really cute idea to use for Christmas gifts for tweens and teens…Depending on how many skirts you have!

What a clever idea! I think I do have an old, long jean skirt in my closet. Hmmm….

I love the flair the bandanna gives it. How cute. Craftykid had a great idea. So fun to do this stuff w/the kids. I just happened to have put a jean skirt in the outgrown pile. My little one will love picking out the emblems.

I have a denim bag that I love. They are great, sturdy and just toss it in the wash for refreshing. It is the best library bag. A friend made it out of squares, like a quilt (but not quilted). It is need of repair and I have to give it back to her to fix it for me. My machine won’t go through that many layers of denim. I can do this one though. My daughter will enjoy this. I love it. Thanks Craftymomof3 and Craftykid. My daughter and I have had some good times w/your crafts.

WAY cute! I love it! I might have to enlist the support of my mom and her sewing machine on this one!

She definitely is a chip off the old block. 🙂 we went to Goodwill and got a sparkly skirt that’s smaller to make for her sister who’s 3 so that’s an option if you don’t have enough old skirts. I can’t wait to see pictures of your versions. Please post them if you do make them!

Also no sewing machine required! I just used a base stitch and it’s held up against her goat binder!

LOL, I saw “goat binder’ and immediately assumed she made some other nifty thing I never heard of. Congrats to Crafty Kid. Hers is way better.

This is really adorable and the bandanna really adds to it. I think my sister and I did something like this back in the 70s with a pair of our jeans or a jean skirt. I am going to have to ask her about that. Of course we did not have a cell phone or a IPod to place in the pocket at the time.

I also think it is wonderful that Crafty Kid ( love that name) is involved in your crafting. My mom always involved us in her crafts when we were growing up and it is something that I always remember warmly and have appreciated.

She has so many bandannas that she can really change it up!

BTW I showed her this post and she said “Mom-I’m like, famous! Well at least internet famous.” LOL 🙂

Aw, that is cute. Tell her to tell her friends (and their moms!).

You can never have enough bandanas, can you?

She can never have too many bandannas. At Girl Scout camp they are a status symbol. Every one wears a different one every day!

I told she should put it up on her facebook.

Awesome job Craftykid and CraftyMom! Something like that would work good for my knitting projects. I made a saddlebag for my bike out of old jeans and for a clothespin bag, I sewed pieces together-just sewed seam binding around the opening and put a plastic hanger in it. I also had to piece the saddlebag and I sewed the back pockets on the inside for my cellphone and camera. It attaches to my luggage rack and hangs over on each side. It has a zipper on the top plus two outside pockets for pepper spray (we have bears roaming around here) and for tissues or sunglasses.

Thanks so much for the new idea–I will have to try that next.

Thanks Corrina! Corrina’s pretty crafty herself. 😉 She has a guest post up on my blog.

    That saddle bag sounds awesome!
