I need to subscribe to the school of wit, taught by L.M. Augustine. The man is a master at writing smart, witty, sassy banter! I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud while reading Click. It’s been a long time since a book gave me that heartwarming, gooey feeling through the whole thing. I have fallen in love with West Ryder, and unless you live under a rock and have no soul, I think you will too!
West Ryder is a high school student, popular vlogger, and an all-around badass ice cream lover. Thoughtful, considerate, and dorky, he puts a huge smile on my face. He’s the kind of boy you would want your daughter to date. I want to hug him and squeeze him and call him my very own. Dorkiness and humor aside, the past six months have been hard for West. The loss of someone he loved dearly has him feeling lost and uber-protective of his own heart. West is such a special, unique character. I really, really heart him.
Confession time – I’ve never watched a vlog. But I might have to if they are all run by smart, funny, nerdy boys like West. He must be good at what he does because he has over 100,000 subscribers. His favorite subscriber is a girl named Harper Knight. She’s just as geeky as West, and gives him a run for his money in the quick wit department. Over the last few months, West and Harper have connected over their love of all things nerdy: chewbacca, pizza and insulting each other. The witty banter between Harper and West left me in stitches.
West feels like Harper is his last chance at holding on to love. He’s convinced she is the girl for him. The ying to his yang. So when Harper suggests that she and West meet up in real life, there’s no hesitation. West immediately agrees because he is convinced that he’s totally in love with her. Who wouldn’t fall head-over-heals for a girl who likes cows that ride bikes while eating pizza? Totally nerdy and loveable, right?! Like any young man who is totally smitten with a rad girl, West is completely surprised, and a bit freaked out to find out who Harper really is. Their meeting doesn’t go how West thought it would and after a pretty public confrontation, West is left feeling confused and wondering if he’s making the right choice. With West left alone with his thoughts and his video camera, he floats through the next few months trying to figure out his life. He’s totally in denial about his feelings. His relationship with Harper isn’t what he thought it would be.
Like any smart girl who knows what she wants, Harper plays West like a fiddle – making him uncomfortable with subtle touches, flirty innuendo – “I know, and that’s fine for now. She leans in and whispers, But I assure you, West Ryder, when I’m done with you, those pants will go flying off.” – and awkward moments. It reminds me of those awkward teenage years, where everything was so simple but we thought it was so complicated that we made it more difficult for ourselves. West is a master at making his own love life difficult. So what does West do to fix the mess he’s made for himself? Neiner, neiner – I’m not telling!
The great thing about Click to Subscribe is that anyone can read this! It’s not smutty or overly-sexed up. I would totally let my 14 year old pseudo-niece read it. But it’s also not so YA that as someone who prefers a little smut in my novels, that I didn’t enjoy it. I absolutely LOVED it! The characters are so well developed that I felt like I knew them personally. The story flows without any awkward choppiness. And it was realistic – no crazy twist or unnecessary drama that didn’t fit. This is how teenagers should be. Awkward, nerdy, and innocent – and full of ice cream, girl scout cookies, and chocolate.
This is L.M. Augustine’s first published novel and I have no doubt that this will not the last we will see or hear of him. I’m sure we’ll be seeing his name on billboards, and his book in bookstores and we’ll all be begging for his autograph soon enough. (Consider this me begging you now, Mr. Augustine!)
