A tale of two friends, a sign and John Mayer
Linda Cohen Kliethermes and Amy Fenster Brown have been best friends since 1st grade when one walked up to the other on the school playground and said “Wanna be friends?” That’s how it worked in those days. They have been by each other’s sides through the illnesses and death of parents, boyfriends, weddings, childbirth — you name it.
Linda has been a die-hard John Mayer fan for years. She went on one of his Mayercraft Carrier fan cruises. She has traveled to other cities from her St. Louis home for concerts. Amy is a fan, but not a crazy super fan like Linda. (And we mean crazy in a good way!) Linda offered to take Amy to Memphis for a Mayer show to celebrate their 40th birthdays. The two had taken many road trips before and always had a blast. So, off they went.
Linda wanted to make signs for the show. Amy replied with a very honest “Dude, we’re f@cking 40 years old, we cannot hold up signs.” Amy lost. She realized how much Linda really just wanted to meet John Mayer. Amy made a sign that read “Chubby Married Cougar Needs Hug.” She worked her way from Linda’s 3rd row seats to the front row and held up the sign. Previous to the show, Amy told Linda “If he even looks at the sign you make your way over and maybe he’ll come down to ‘high five’ you or something, so you take the sign and meet him.”
Well, the video shows what happened when John saw the sign. Oy, that infamous sign.
Amy and Linda have created a Facebook page titled Chubby Married Cougar Needs Hug.

This is THE funniest video! What a sweet story! I’ve known Amy for a very long time – she keeps me in stitches!
That sign was right up John Mayer’s alley. From what I’ve seen of him, he seems to have a great sense of humour.
Funny video.
Very funny- so glad they both got to meet him!
I loved this story starting with the writers and the account of their friendship – “wanna be friends?” How cute and sweet.
I am at work, so I will probably wait to watch the video, but the story has put a smile on my face this morning.
As John Mayer works to rehab his image, he might want to his PR people circulate this around. It does show him in a good light. 🙂
I totally agree, Anya! I’m not necessarily one of his fans.
Congratulations on those hugs, ladies. That must have been one exciting night!
That is such a happy video. I love to see people’s dreams come true. She’ll remember that night always, not only for meeting the musician she adored, but because of the help of her best friend. That’s so special. Love how they got his attention w/that sign. So funny and cute.

Congrats Amy and Linda! What a fun night.

So cute! Yeah, I’m not a Mayer fan, but it’s still a cute video and a cute story. I’m so happy for her.
I am not a John Mayer fan either but this is a great story. A night to remember for sure.
