Imagine waking up battered, bruised and being held hostage in a luxurious suite without being able to remember how the hell you got there. Welcome to Claire Nichols world. I found this book by accident. Another author asked her readers for some book suggestions that weren’t typical and Consequences was an overwhelmingly popular suggestion. I figured hey why not, and popped on over to Amazon and scratched my one-click itch on Consequences. I knew by what the other readers were saying that it wasn’t your typical novel. What I didn’t realize was how enthralling, dark and infuriating it would be. More than once, I had to put the book down and walk away so I could get a handle on my emotions.
The majority of Consequences is written from Claire’s perspective. Claire is your average pretty girl; living her life and working. She’s had some fallbacks but she doesn’t dwell on those. Instead she just keeps plugging along. I really like Claire. She is a decent human being. I would be friends with Claire in real life. When Claire meets Anthony Rawlings while working in a bar, she has no idea that her life will never be the same. Anthony Rawlings seems like the catch of a lifetime; handsome, rich and kind. In actuality, Anthony is a rat bastard who hides his real self from the world. The things he does to Claire are straight out of a nightmare. I want to rip his face off, shove it down his neck and then kick in an unmentionable place, repeatedly. Anthony Rawlings has taken over the title of “most hated fictional character” for me. I seriously do NOT like this guy.
Consequences leads us through a story of manipulation, deceit, physical and emotional abuse and love. LOVE? Yes, love. The love really ticks me off. I wish I could jump into Claire’s world and shake some damn sense into her. I want to ask her “WHY????”. Ultimately, love isn’t enough to save Claire from what Anthony has planned for her. No matter how obedient and submissive Claire is, Anthony has something big planned for her. Their entire relationship has been based on him exacting a horrific revenge, and Claire is the target. Revenge isn’t quite as sweet for Anthony as he thinks it’s going to be. Claire doesn’t choose the destiny he thinks she will. Instead, Claire decides to plan a little revenge of her own…
When I finished this book my feelings were all over the place. I felt anxious, pissed off and intrigued. I wanted to immediately pick up the sequel, Truth, and start reading it. I just couldn’t do it. I was too emotionally dumbstruck to move on. It took me about a week to finally feel ready to read the sequel, Truth. Soon, I’ll be reviewing Truth, so ladies, get your 1-click finger out and start reading Consequences!
And… because I want to torture you all like I was tortured, we will be gifting away 1 free eBook (kindle only) copy of Consequences to 1 lucky reader. All you have to do is answer the question in the comments section below:
Question: If you were given the chance to have a secret identity, who would you be?

Wow, the Anthony character must be really, really awful for him to be your most hated! What a great review!
Many years ago when I was in grade school there was a kazillionaire that had a weekly newspaper column. Each week people would write in and he would grant their monetary wishes if they made a sincere and reasonable request. I always thought that would be a fun anonymous thing to do full time. Maybe if I ever get filthy rich……
A ninja of course! Great review Jenn!!
Secret identity? A college English professor. 🙂
My secret identity is as a kitten cuddler. I slip quietly into shelters and pet stores at night and nuzzle the kitties.
Jennie, you freaking crack me up.
I would be a homicide detective!!
Hmmmmm, I am not sure. Maybe a spy. Back in the 70s or 80s. For the US of course.
By the way, great review!
Oh boy, that’s a tough question! Maybe I’d do something fun like own an art gallery as my secret identity.
Sounds enticing! What a great read!
Hmmm… I think I would be some sort of detective. Sounds fun!
My secret identity wouldn’t be secret if I told silly!! If I had a secret identity it would have to be something really fun that no one would ever expect of me like an advice column writer.
Hmmmm…a secret identity…I’d be a spy. I always like to know what’s going on.
It’s a secret! 😉
