Cover Reveal,Just Human,Kerry Heavens By Jen

I wish I could take the book cover for Just Human and stick it on a billboard filled with bright flashing neon lights so it would get everyone’s attention. Not just because I love the unique cover, but also because the story deserves it. From the chapter titles, to the secondary characters, to the most sensual moments in the love scenes, Just Human stands out with its believability, attention to detail, and vulnerability. Kerry Heavens created a world for Liv and Danny that spans from the UK to the USA. Sometimes I find books written by British writers hard to follow due to the different lingo. Not the case with Just Human. It’s written from both Liv and Danny’s POV and I think Kerry did a great job of making sure Liv spoke like she was British and Danny like he was American. Prepare yourselves because you will be hooked from page 1.

Facebook is a big part of our current social networking. It keeps us connected to our loved ones and helps us reconnect with those we’ve lost contact with. Liv and Danny haven’t seen or talked to each other in 12 years. Once childhood sweethearts, a move 5,000 miles away severed their relationship. Both were heartbroken but wanted to allow the other to move on so they did what they thought was best, got on with their lives. But when you find someone as special as Danny and Liv were to each other, you can move on but never really get over it. That’s what they have both spent the last 12 years doing – going to school, building lives, having relationships that don’t really work out. So when Danny messages Liv on Facebook and reconnects with her, it’s like fireworks on the 4th of July. From the first chat message popping up on Liv’s phone (which quite literally, gave me the chills!), you can feel Liv’s whole world tip over. The roller coaster of emotions Liv goes through trying to figure out what this contact means to her current life shows how vulnerable she really is. Liv has this tough exterior shell, with her piercings and tattoo’s, but when you mix her up with Danny, you can see that she has a soft, insecure core that never got over losing Danny.

Speaking of Danny… He isn’t your normal muscled, arrogant, alpha-male. He’s sweet, loveable, and slightly insecure. He’s also a TOTAL ROMANTIC! He’s the kind of guy you want to build a life with and marry. He’s got a hot body and with the cool California beach hair going on, he’ll make you drool and lose your mind. Danny is also uber-creative in bed. There’s this one scene where he does this thing that, dear lord, I almost lost my mind just reading it! All of these things made me fall in love with Danny Morgan. And then he goes and pulls off one of the most romantic gestures I’ve ever read. *SWOON* He’s perfect, flaws and all.

For anyone who has ever had the “what-if” person in their life, this book will take you back to those thoughts and memories. It’s impossible not to wonder what could have been when you live in Danny and Liv’s world. Just Human is a breath of fresh air in a sometimes stale world of lost love. Kerry’s writing style is fresh and modern. The way she develops the characters is seamless and done in a way that you don’t even realize how much knowledge you’ve just gained. The conversation between the characters flows naturally. And let me just tell you, the smexy scenes are freaking outstanding! Not only are they detailed and original but they are emotionally charged. You can feel the soul mate connection between the characters down into your gut, long before they ever they ever say the words.

This is Book #1 in a series. The next book will be called Still Human. If Kerry Heavens is reading this review right now, I want her to know that my heart and soul need this book ASAP!

My rating: 5 – this is a must read because Kerry is a future star – stars

~     Excerpt     ~

“Is that her?”
“Yeah, she looks really different. She’s pierced her nose…and lip! Wow.”
“She’s pretty.”
“Yeah, she always was. She looks really different, but it’s her.”
I stare at her. I want to see more, but I can’t unless I add her and she accepts. I’ve purposely never searched for her. In fact, I’ve never looked up anyone else I knew from England either, mainly because I wasn’t bothered, but also in case they were friends with her.
“So?” asks Jen, looking at me expectantly.
“So, what do you think I should do?”
“Well, what do you think you should do?”
“God, Jen. I don’t know. You know what it did to me, leaving her behind.”
Jen looks at me pensively for a moment and then opens her mouth to say something. Closing it again, she changes her mind. I watch her, waiting. She starts again.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Anything.”
“Why have you never settled down?”
I laugh. “I don’t know, I’ve never met the right girl I guess.”
“Maybe…maybe you have met the right girl…but you had to leave her behind.” She finishes with her sweetest smile to soften the blow.
“Don’t say that, I’m barely holding it together as it is!”
I rub my face. This can’t be happening.
“She made it clear, she thought it was for the best that I leave. I wanted more, way more, you know that, but it wasn’t what she wanted. I tried to stay in touch but she was obviously moving on, you know the rest, you were there. I can’t do that again. Besides, if she wanted to find me she could have. It isn’t her asking for contact. She probably hasn’t thought about me in years.”
“I don’t believe that. This Connie woman obviously thinks you should get in touch. Maybe she never got over you either.”
“I’d love to talk to her, find out how she is. But what if it isn’t enough? What if…I can’t risk it?”
“Danny, you know as well as I do that you’ll do this. If not, it’ll eat you up.”
“Shit…Shit!” I put my head in my hands, pausing for a moment, gathering my thoughts and breathing deeply. Then I sit up, grab the laptop and click ‘Message’ and hammer it out before I change my mind. She’s right; it will eat me up if I don’t.

I hit send. Fuck!
“Good for you,” says Jen, beaming from ear to ear.
“You know this is going to fuck with my head. I hope you can spare the time, it looks like you’re going back into the therapy business,” I grin. I’m terrified, but I can’t deny it, it’s a real buzz too. Liv. Christ! Suddenly she’s real again. What is she like?
“What time is it?”
Jen cranes her neck and checks the clock on the wall.
“9:45.”
“I’m going to go shower.”
“That saves us a conversation!” she jokes. I jump up and as she stands I grab her and force her face into my armpit.
“Urgh! You are so gross! Get out of here!” she laughs.
