Billy Ray Cyrus shares the dark side of being Miley Cyrus’s dad in the March issue of GQ. In this lengthy interview, Cyrus blames Disney hit Hannah Montana for his family’s problems including his divorce and revealed some regrets. “I hate to say it, but yes, I do. I’d take it back in a second,” he revealed regarding the show that brought his daughter a great deal of wealth and fame.
“I’m scared for her,” Billy Ray, 49, tells the March issue of GQ. “She’s got a lot of people around her that’s putting her in a great deal of danger. I know she’s 18, but I still feel like as her daddy I’d like to try to help. Take care of her just a little bit, to at least get her out of danger.”
Cyrus revealed in this interview that he has been pushed out of Miley’s life and although he appeared in the show Hannah Montana, he was never her manager and did not make decisions in her professional life and therefore did not benefit financially. “For the record,” he says, “to set it straight, I want to tell you: I’ve never made a dime off of Miley. You got a lot of people have made percentages off of her. I’m proud to say to this day I’ve never made one commissioned dollar, or dime, off of my daughter.”
Miley has been in the news lately regarding some questionable behavior and Cyrus blames the problems on bad advice given to Miley by her management team and Disney. He also claims he’s been made the “fall guy” for whenever negative publicity surrounded the family citing the Vanity Fair Cover where Miley had only a sheet covering her as one example.
As a parent, I have great empathy for Billy Ray. I feel for him. However, I am not sure I buy everything he is saying. Billy Ray was on the show. He actually was “party to this party” that was happening on a daily basis. I am having a hard time believing that Disney and Miley’s management team were able to to do much without the consent of parents since she was a minor until just recently. I do understand that at 18, Miley and her management team do not have to share anything with her parents. But what about the previous four years?
Quite possibly could some of his parenting decisions along with his wife have any impact on Miley’s poor decisions she is making. Stripper Pole dancing at the Teen Choice Awards when she was 16? Lap dancing with a 44 year old male at a wrap party for one of her movies when she was 16? Racy music videos at 17?
I am also wondering why he did not speak up earlier. Was it because he was still employed by Disney? Still bringing in a paycheck?
I really do not want to judge Billy Ray. I am a parent also and have regrets about decisions I have made and mistakes I have made. However, they were mistakes that I made and I own them.
I think Miley is probably just going through things that most teens do when they reach 18 and experience independence such as going away to college. The difference is that those teens usually are still dependent on their parents financially and therefore still share and allow their parents to participate in making decisions in their life. I have a feeling that Miley will come around and want her “daddy” to be back in her life. However, I would recommend laying a little low and maybe laying off these type of interviews.
