The world is watching, celebrities! The most famous faces often seem to forget this fact (or, in the case of the Kardashian divorce, perhaps not), and so voyeurs across the world make a sport of observing celebrities behaving badly. 2011 saw a spate of celebrity divorces with a few ending long-term marriages and a few more that no one predicted would survive the long haul. Here’s an overview of some of the bigger break-ups that happened this year:
Russell Brand and Katy Perry. This one just squeaked in, as movie star and comedian Russell Brand announced on Friday, December 30th, that he was filing for divorce fourteen months after he and pop singer Katy Perry were married in a secretive ceremony in India in October of 2010. Though the couple had gushed about each other in recent interviews, reports of the feuds and arguments that bedeviled their marriage almost from day one suggested that their marriage was on the skids. Unfortunately for Perry in particular, neither signed a prenuptial agreement, which, according to the laws of the state of California, means that they have to split their earnings 50/50. While Brand is worth about $15 million, Perry makes more than $40 million.
Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Despite frequent Tweets about their love for each other, actress Demi Moore filed for divorce from actor Ashton Kutcher in November after six years of marriage. Their May-December romance puzzled many, as Moore is nearly sixteen years older than her former beau. Equally puzzling was their well-documented friendship with Moore’s former husband Bruce Willis. Moore’s statement about their divorce was diplomatic, surprising after all the gossip about Kutcher’s many reported infidelities.
Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. Two pop singers in love couldn’t survive growing irreconcilable differences after being married seven years. The couple filed for divorce in July. Lopez recently took up hosting duties on Fox’s “American Idol” television series, while Anthony recently released a new album. The tabloids have, of course, been eagerly reporting the lurid details of their messy divorce.
Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. Anyone watching E! Entertainment Television could have spotted the dissolution of socialite and media darling Kim Kardashian’s relationship with basketball hunk Kris Humphries from a mile away, as their marriage has been documented ad nauseum for months. Only a few weeks after their four hour wedding special aired on E!, Kardashian filed for divorce, while Humphries has retaliated by filing for an annulment.
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver. Arnold’s marriage to reporter Maria Shriver dissolved quite spectacularly when it was revealed that the former governator’s long-term affair with his housekeeper had yielded a child. Shriver and Schwarzenegger already have four children together after twenty-five years of marriage. Recent reports have speculated that a reconciliation is in the works, however. Will that mean he can revive his struggling political career as well, which has suffered since recent revelations about his love child? Only time will tell.
Sounds like these celebs could use tips on how to rekindle a marriage … but it probably wouldn’t take.
