August…Means Back To School!

By Pam@IW

TweetPinEmailPrintYummlyLinkedInLikeShareShare1

“Whilst August yet wears her golden crown,
Ripening fields lush- bright with promise;
Summer waxes long, then wanes, quietly passing
Her fading green glory on to riotous Autumn.”

– Michelle L. Thieme,  August’s Crown

August is here and it is time to get ready for school for a good deal of kids and adults alike! Whether it is sending your child off to their first day of kindergarten or first day of college, it can be a somewhat sad and very exciting month all at the same time. Child, grandchild or quite possibly yourself….let us know how your back to school planning and shopping is coming along.

What else is going on in August?

Women’s Equality Day on August 26th  would be one very important day to the majority of the readers at Imperfect Women. It is designated in the United States as Women’s Equality Day. Instituted by Rep. Bella Abzug and first established in 1971, the date commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment, the Woman Suffrage Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which gave U.S. women full voting rights in 1920.

Happy Birthday to everyone that has an August birthday. Let us know in the comment section, so we can wish you a great day!

As always, please use this thread for Open Discussion on whatever topic you would like to talk about.  Have a great month!

My kids go back to school August 22, we’ve purchased all the supplies & uniforms for my little kids, we didn’t buy any jeans yet since it will be warm enough for shorts until at least mid October. My 15 yr old thinks she needs more clothes, we won’t get her school supply list until the first day of school. I still need to buy shoes for everyone but other than that we’ve purchased everything.

My little guy will start kinder. this year, he is a little nervous about it but he has attended preschool for the last 2 years so I know he will be fine.

My little girl will start 3rd grade, she is very excited.

My oldest daughter will be in 10th grade, she likes school and is very social, high school is the perfect place for her.

My oldest son has signed up for the fall semester, after that he will not be too far from being finished with his diesel mechanic course. I wasn’t sure if he would sign up or not, I didn’t mention it and bite my tongue everytime I wanted to ask.

For this school year my 2 youngest will be at the same school, this will be the only time they are together until high school, my older kids are far enough apart in age that they were never at the same school.

    My birthday is in August!
    .
I have to say I have a little residual pang for all the poor kids facing school looming again. Summer goes so fast. It seems like the summer has barely started when you start seeing back-to-school sale ads. I always hated that as a kid.

STX, Lots going on in your household. 4 kids equal lots of work but lots of excitement too. You have your hands full.
    .
Your weather sounds like ours. Our summer goes well into October. Glad to hear your son is enrolled in the fall semester.

You all know my oldest son has had some issues lately but now he really seems to be back on track. This morning when he was leaving for class he asked me to make him a drs appointment so he can get back on his ADD meds, he stopped taking them on his own in April and thats sort of when things fell apart for him. Of course I called the dr as soon as they opened and begged for an appointment today. They are working him in at 11:30 and the biggest shock of all is my son asked me to go with him to his appt.

That is such good news, stxmom. Don’t you just love it when they have an “ah ha” moment as Oprah likes to say and they figure things out.

I don’t have a little one, Stxmom, but I have a college aged boy and a high school girl (and a 13 yr. old daughter,) and they sound very much like yours. They will be home for one more year, then they will both be going away for college, so we will only have our youngest home in a year. It makes me nervous. Will they eat their vegetables or buy bowls of M&Ms like they threaten?
    .
Congratulations on your son’s maturity! Believe it or not, he’s AHEAD of the curve. Just the other day I had to remind my boy that “America doesn’t need another lazy man! Those jobs are all filled!” So it’s great yours is so close to being trained for a REAL JOB. Kudos!
    .
I love the start of the school year. I will be cutting pack my hours this year so that I can make the most of my last year with my two oldest. But with two in college in 2012, the bills are looming…

    stxmom.

Good news from your household!! Sometimes it just takes talking the issue out and backing away from the subject. Letting him think it through proves that he did listen to you. I wish your son a great year in school!!

Has everyone’s weather cooled off? Will we be complaining about cold just around the corner?

  14. stxmom says

    August 13, 2011 at 2:06 pm

Pam, its hotter than ever here, we’ve had at least 20 days in a row of 100+ heat index. This has been the hottest summer since we moved here 11 years ago.

  15. Lily@IW says

    August 13, 2011 at 5:13 pm

I’m sorry it’s back to school time. Summer went by really fast. We had so much rain in June, we didn’t get to do hardly any summer stuff that month. NO fair! We’re all ready for school though. Still have to take in some of my daughter’s clothes, but that’s the last thing.

I’m hitting the farmer’s market first thing in the morning to get some green tomatoes to fry up. Haven’t had any at all this summer.

It cooled off for us, Pam. We’ve had a lovely mix of rain and sun, hot and cold. The mornings have been chilly this week, and “hinting” at fall. I am not ready for summer to end. 🙁

  18. Lily@IW says

So much for fried green tomatoes for dinner. The farmer’s market in my town is only open on Sat. I had no idea. I guess I’ve always gone on Sat. I called some friends who are at the flea market today and hope they find some for me.

    Lily,

Wish you lived by me, I would give you a huge basket of green tomatoes. I did can tomatoes today, will post pics later.

  20. Lily@IW says

    August 14, 2011 at 9:46 pm

Snickers, bless you. If only….cause we didn’t get any today. My little one and I were both disappointed. I will not miss next weekend’s market. Yum, canned tomatoes. I love cooking w/them. I have never canned, I always freeze my stuff (not tomatoes). My mother still does a lot of canning and makes great jams. I have never used a pressure cooker. I sort of view pressure cookers the same way the one Sister Wife views toasters. I am sure something will go wrong or I will mess up and it will explode.

  21. snickers says

    August 14, 2011 at 10:05 pm

    Lily,

You can freeze tomatoes. Just boil them good until they break down with small chunks, cool, put in freezer bag. You can just slit the whole bag and throw in a pot of soup. You also can cook them longer and strain for just juice and freeze that also.

  22. snickers says

    August 14, 2011 at 10:09 pm

    Lily,

I forgot to tell you to add a little canning salt to your batch. If I use a large pan, I add about a even tablespoon of salt.

  23. Lily@IW says

    August 14, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Snickers, I didn’t know you could do that!! I will definitely be freezing tomatoes. Thank you.

Thirteen years ago I delivered my youngest child in the middle of a cold winter. My sister made me dinner and packed in the basket were home-canned tomato sauce for pasta and home-canned peaches for dessert. I will NEVER forget the pleasure of opening and tasting those canned goodies in the middle of winter. It was like opening summer sunshine into my home!

    Ann,

It has turned cooler here, nice light breeze, feels like a lovely fall morning. Saying this, I still have plenty of things in the garden to take care of. Then it will be time for pumpkin and gourd harvest, broom corn, etc. Looking forward to the cooler days, and sure would share with everyone here if I could. 🙂

Has anyone followed the saga of the West Memphis Three? There were two documentaries on them, Paradise Lost, The Child Murders at Robin Wood Hills & Paradise Lost 2. Three teens were wrongly convicted of the brutal murder of 3 little boys. It was sloppy from the beginning and unbelievable that with their trial, they were ever found guilty. Damien Echols has been sitting on death row for years. Their lives were taken away and no justice was given to the little boys who were murdered. After 20 years, all three of the WM3 are being released! I am ecstatic for them and hope they have lots of support to restart their lives as free men. It was all such an injustice, I wish them well.

My kids started back to school today, my little guy was fine, just worried about what the babysitter would do all day. I held myself together until all the kids were dropped off and I was alone in the car then I had myself a little cry and got it out of my system.

I had a son who died shortly after birth, he would be 17 now and starting his senior year, he is always on my mind but days like today I always have lots questions running through my mind – would he be a good student?, would he play a sport or maybe he would be in drama club or on the debate team, maybe in the band, all questions with no answers.

My 15 yr old will come home with a school supply list from each teacher, we will spend the evening running around trying to find everything. Little kids will probably crash early and I know our babysitter will stop by to see how their first day went.

Watched something on TV yesterday about it. I wish them well and hope that they can overcome what they had to endure. My husband and I have followed that case also. I am wondering how they will adjust. I know one of them married while in prison.

Pam, kids are enjoying school, my little guy is in love with his teacher, she is the perfect teacher for him, just the right amount of strictness mixed with lots of praise and hugs. My little girl, 3rd grade, is happy with her teachers although she has had homework everyday since the 1st day. My oldest daughter is happy with her classes except there are 40 students in her chemistry and world history classes, I’m not happy with that.

Ann, cherish every minute of senior year, it goes back too quickly.

Pam & Ann, thanks for your kindness, I was just having a few minutes of a pity party, my baby was born with an enlarged heart, nothing could be done, I know he is watching over my other 4.

I love how you little one loves his teacher already!! 🙂 Our little guy around here told us his teacher this year is hot. LMAO!! I don’t think he knows what that means, the older kids have said this about her, so he picked up on that. I hope that hot teachers thinks he’s nice.

snickers, its so funny the things kids pick up on. My hubby and I were having a conversation about another person who my hubby doesn’t like, my 8 yr old was in the room so hubby said “he is so anal” instead of using a**hole, now my 8 yr old says “anal” all the time about everything. She has no clue what it means.

We’ve survived the 1st week of school without too many issues, getting back into a routine has been a challenge but it will come.

My new secretary at work started last week, she is doing great, she quickly figured out our phone system and understands our computer system. She has a great memory and is really good with names.

I couldn’t fire my old secretary, she is a young single mom (2 kids), she tried really hard but just didn’t have any computer skills. She is very smart and organized and I really like her so she is now more like my assistant, she has learned to scan documents and she organized our files, our office has never been more organized.

Both of my children are seniors in high school……everytime I think about their graduation ceremony I get emotional. These last 3 years have went by so fast, my babies have grown, matured and soon I will be experiencing the reality of the very thought I used to sustain me at times……”One day they will grow up and be out of the house” I always teased them I would be dancing on the table when they left, but again the ugly head of reality creeps up and the idea of being kidless in the house scares the hell outta me! LOL No doubt I will morph into the crazy bunny lady, or crazy lady with little dogs…….This year both kids worked all summer and bought their own school supplies, in fact they drove themselves to go do it. I was completely cut out of the picture…….an unpleasant chore I always thought I would NEVER MISS when I didn’t have to do it anymore, but my feelings were a tad hurt when they said “We got this Mom.” and walked out the door without me. So bittersweet. I actually miss the days when they were so excited to show me their “papers” I couldn’t even go to the bathroom first without them bursting in to show me……lol lol Ahhhh August…..nuttin like it.
