7 Ways Gardening is Good for Your Health

Do you enjoy working in the garden? Many people do, as it provides solace from the hustle and bustle of daily life. But did you know that gardening can be great for your health as well? It’s true! Take a look below at 7 ways gardening is good for your health and can help you lead a happier, healthier life! You may never look at gardening the same way again.

7 Ways Gardening is Good for Your Health

1. It tones and strengthens muscles.

All of that lifting, digging, planting, and weeding can really add up. Gardening can help you strengthen and tone your muscles which results in a leaner and healthier you.

2. Gardening provides you with fresh produce.

Having fresh produce at your fingertips will no doubt allow you to eat healthier. A healthy diet rich in vegetables can help you lose weight and get the vitamins and nutrients you need to live a healthier life.

3. It encourages creativity.

Gardening encourages creativity as you plan your layout and other garden décor. Encouraging creativity can help you keep your mind sharp and the ideas flowing!

4. Gardening provides solace.

As mentioned before, gardening provides solace which is needed after a stressful day. Having a place of solace you can retreat to can help reduce anxiety and stress.

5. It can lower your blood pressure.

Doing a hobby you love and enjoy can actually reduce stress and lower your blood pressure. Spending some time in your garden each day is a great way to relax and let nature soothe you.

6. Gardening may be able to boost your immune system.

There have been studies that show that exposure to dirt can actually help boost your immune system. Spending time in the garden no doubt exposes you to dirt! Even if this isn’t the case, the herbs you grow in your garden can no doubt boost your immunity and make you healthier.

7. You get your dose of vitamin D.

While too much sun is bad, the little bit of sun you get while working in your garden can give you a boost of vitamin D. Make the sun you soak in “safe sun.” Always wear sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from burning.

Who would have thought that gardening can be so beneficial to your health? Consider planting a garden this year so you too can reap the health benefits they have to offer.

Do you garden? If so, do you get enjoyment from it?

My yard is literally all shade, so I am pretty sure I can’t have my own garden. I agree about the fresh produce, though – I am at my farmer’s market all the time!

I do have a garden and while it is mostly just grass I have to admit just the ability to sit out there uplifts my mood. x

I would love to learn more about gardening! I just can’t seem to find the time for anything new when I have a hard enough time just maintaining the current responsibilities. Maybe one day ….

I need the Vitamin D I am going to get from gardening. When I was last at my Dr. He said my Vitamin D was just a wee bit low.

I really want to start a garden but the heat in Arizona is so drastic during the summer that I don’t want to go outside. My garden would surely die.

I wonder if you couldn’t start a garden in the shade, using plants that can withstand less sun? Also… send some of your Arizona heat up to Pennsylvania please.

I love spending a little time in the sun each day and would love to have more fresh produce. Our local weather is just so hostile when it comes to plant life.

I wish I had time to garden and a place to do it but sadly I don’t this summer. We are hoping to move anyway, so hoping to find a new place with room to garden!

I love gardening. It’s my stress reliever. But I also do it as a means to provide healthy food to my family at a much cheaper rate. A packet of seeds is so cheap and provides so much bounty.

I don’t really garden, but my husband does. We LOVE the fresh produce we get from his garden! I’d love to do some gardening of my own, but here in Phoenix it’s so hot and dry it’s hard to grow too much and I get frustrated. Someday if we move somewhere with better weather and better soil, I’d really love to try gardening for myself.

Years ago I had a house and a garden. I live in an apartment now, but when I had my house I had a nice garden out front. I enjoyed working in it for many of the reasons you listed, but the top benefit for me was the solace it provided. I could just let my mind go as I pulled weeds and dug in the soil. It is something I miss. Next month we are moving to a townhouse and I think I might be able to make a small garden out back. It is something I am looking forward to.

We garden, but I must say we aren’t too good at it, haha! Our small vegetable garden does fine, I’m pretty good at weeding it and watering it, but our flower gardens I just tend to give up. It’s weed city in there! It’s just so big and weeding to me is a boring task. I love planting and watching plants grow though!
