For many of us, it can be quite strenuous to care for a child while trying to keep the career in check without someone to lean on. The days can seem to last forever as one problem after another comes across your path. While some have other ideas of relieving the levels of stress throughout any given day, housekeeping can be greatly rewarding as a form of meditation. Not meditation in the traditional sense, but that it can help you clear your mind and assist in your decision making. Plus, you get things clean!
Feeling Isolated – When you put forth the effort to vigorously clean house, very few people are acknowledged. In this frame of mind, it is just you in this existence trying to complete a goal. Your mind is focused and you could be somewhat oblivious to some of the world around you, but yet you are completely aware of your surroundings. It is similar to how you may feel if you were to sit in a lotus position on the floor. Although you may not be truly isolated, your focus provides the similarity.
Focused on the Cleaning – If you were to focus on the goal of cleaning a particular part of the house, then it fills your mind and provides a break from the stresses of the world. For that time, it is you and the grime – and nothing else matters. You’re not covering up the problem with another task, but you’re providing yourself with a much needed break that can allow you to think rationally about solutions.
Energy Depletion – Many will mediate in order to gain strength and energy in order to overcome obstacles. On the other side of the coin, it can be just as beneficial to exhaust all of that negative energy you may be feeling in a positive way. In fact, many therapists suggest that people do something constructive when feeling angered or frustrated in order to exhaust themselves for the same reason. In the end, you could be too tired in order to be angry or frustrated allowing your mind to develop alternatives to the situation. Otherwise, you could mull over the problem and make irrational decisions spurned from your frustrations.
Keeping Yourself Busy – As in maintaining focus mentioned above, vigorous housekeeping can keep yourself and your mind occupied while feeling in a negative mood. It’s this negativity that can lead to making situations worse than they are, and realizing that you have that potential is the first step to solving the problem. By keeping yourself busy, your mind and body have an opportunity to release those negative emotions without impacting your life in a likewise manner.
Clean Home, Clear Mind – It may be interesting to note that the condition of your home may be causing some of your mental stresses in life. Many people can feel claustrophobic in their own homes as they are surrounded by various things. Keeping your home cleaned can allow you to keep a clear mind without the frustrations of tripping over toys or sitting on a random fork.
The only real difference between housekeeping and meditation is the fact that one keeps you moving while the other practices relaxation in a fixed position. Both can have a profound impact in how you view the rest of the day. The next time you’re feeling frustrated, put that energy to work and clear your living space of various obstacles.
